- Hi, I'm Milly and this is my vlog which is mainly about books I buy, books I read and the e-books I write.
This is my second Claire Keegan and it is my second Claire Keegan 5*. So beautiful and heartbreaking. A short read but don't let that fool you - there is so much hidden in the pages, in the words.

That detail about calves being taken off from the cows and were given milk replacement, and the girl thought the calves were content is an exact representation of her situation.
That's why I love Claire Keegan - every sentence has a meaning
Thank you for this. It is obvious in your review how emotionally involved you were by the author's exquisite writing. I too loved the story, and as a short story writer I found much to admire. It left me breathless.
I've adored everything that she has written
I bought my first Claire Keegan book this morning Antarctica after I saw the stunning window display of the amazing cover. I went in to see what the book was about and three members of staff sung it's praises to me. I read all about the accolades that Claire as received of her writing and I'm ashamed to say that I have not heard of her before now. I am so going to rectify that. :)
I'm on the lookout for that one - would you believe that my library doesn't have it!
I loved this one as well. Like her other book "small things like these" I read it once, felt that i didnt grasp it enough, so i read it again and enjoyed it more. She is masterful, and i have enjoyed reading these novelas, which allow me to experience a completely different life lived. One thing that impressed me is the way she makes you feel for the character with so little said in terms of writing, that scene where the lady starts crying when she is pulling the berries made me pretty bloody sad! anyway... nice review!
If she wrote a shopping list, i would read that. I think her writing is just so emotive
I just read the short story last night. You are spot on - it’s truly beautiful writing. I kept waiting for it to turn dark, but it never does. It’s sad, but beautiful. I feel compelled to read more of her work.
My husband has bought me her latest one - but I can't have it till Christmas. So mean of him haha

The Christmas dinner will have to wait until I've read it, won't it?
It appears so! 😀@@millysbookshelf2101
Is this story in the book setting in Ireland?
Yes, it's set in rural Ireland
Just read through it this morning. Couldn’t put it down. A beautiful and heartbreaking story.
So much emotion in so few pages - she's a wonderful writer
Isn't this The Quiet Girl? I didn't realise that it had been based on a book.
I think it is although I've never seen it.
The movie is brilliant though I haven’t read the short story yet.
I need to try to find it.
Yes. The book characters speak English not Irish - that was the film makers choice
I just finished it. Loved it. That ending just floored me. I was on the brink of sadness throughout the whole little book- and then it hit- when she just took off running down the road towards the couple...
One of my favourite books of the year.
Claire Keegan really manages to pack so much into her short work. Like you, I first read and loved 'Small Things Like These', I will read 'Foster' next. It sounds like I will need tissues again!
If you're like me, you will. I'm going to have to try to track down her short story collections now.
It’s been a while since a book made me weep like that. I love it when a book can break your heart like that
There are times when a good cry over a book is just what is needed
I bought this on a whim last week. I will look forward to reading it very soon.
If you are like me, you will need tissues at hand.
It was a teary read but brilliant in it’s telling. I read it last night ( NZ time) and again this morning. A 5 star read for sure 🥰
Same here - how she packs so much into such a short book - amazing.
I've got to jump on the Claire Keegan bandwagon! Everyone is talking about her books. I just loved your review - your voice is so quiet and soothing.
I’ve become a huge fan. I adore the way she writes characters and landscapes - how there is so much emotion in so few pages
Also Small things like these. Another stellar novella by the same author
She does it again and again - so much emotion in so few pages. Stunning.
Isn’t it DAN and Edna? Isn’t John her biological father? Maybe I am mistaken…
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
she goes to stay with John and Edna for the summer - could he be her biological father? You've thrown me a curve ball there. But somehow I don't think he is , but when she says Daddy who does she refer to?
@@millysbookshelf2101 oh forgive me! I read it some time ago.. I thought the people she stayed with for the summer were Dan and Edna!
@@millysbookshelf2101 She says Daddy twice at the very end of the story, the first time referring to her father who was walking towards her carrying a stick and the second time to the man who cared for her over the summer.
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
A word that she has never used to refer to her father until that very last line. So many emotions in those few words. I loved it.
🥲 this book is wonderful
It is - I've loved all of her books. I need her to write another book - I've got withdrawl symptoms.
If you watched the movie, the book is based on your heart may just break.😢
I really must try and find this movie.
@millysbookshelf2101 it's called The quiet girl.
Thank you
