      imo Flash Point is a really bad movie in all regards EXCEPT the action, but the action is so good that it justifies the movie appearing on this list. SPL is a much better movie.

      @@thomastorodo9968 I liked it, but not as much as IA. I saw IA first and The Departed just seemed like a good facsimile, but a facsimile none the less. Part for part I think IA had better performance, Tony Leung, Eric Tsang, and Anthony Wong I think particularly out did their American counterparts, and that's saying a lot since I consider DiCaprio, Nicholson and Sheen very very good actors.

    • @johnnyla
      @johnnyla 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lobstereleven4610 Not to be too snobby about it but I like Infernal Affairs MUCH BETTER. The drama's stronger and story is tighter in my opinion. I'm chinese so maybe there's some cultural stuff that a foreigner would miss but it's an incredible film in my opinion. Once I was procrastinating and turned on the film to watch it for 5 mins before going back to work. Next thing I know I saw the entire thing. It really pulls you in.

    I loooove 80s and 90s HK action cinema so much. My older sister worked at an anime/HK video store when i was 9 or 10 and i got free rentals so I grew up on a lot of this stuff. There were so many amazing films produced in HK back then and I'll never grow tired of watching them.

    My favorite film of all time right now: An Elephant Sitting Still (大象席地而坐) by Hu Bo
    It's very slow (almost 4 hours long), and it's a super depressing and realistic look at life with no hope
    But the shots linger and they're done so well, that it's interesting the whole time

    Fantastic list you've made there my friend. Chinese cinema, especially in the 90s and early 2000s had so much quality to offer, it was unreal. Maybe I can also interest your audience in a couple more masterpiece s of Chinese cinema like the following
    1. In the Heat of the Sun (Yanngguang Canlan de Rizi), 1994 - Slice of Life, Coming of Age story - very Beijing
    2. To Live (Huozhe), 1994 - historical drama - the great Gong Li in one of her greatest roles
    3. Keep Cool (You Hua, Haohao Shuo), 1997 - comedy - batshit crazy, hard-boiled humour - very Beijing again.
    Best wishes and thanks again for the video.

    "Comrades: Almost a love story" is one of my all time favourite drama films that I didnt expected to be so good, but it shows so well the years its developed in, specially with chinese migration. And also is curious how I grew up with "Kung Fu hustle" as a reference film for comedy, given that I am from Spain.
    Anyway thanks for the list!! Im really anticipating the "In the mood of love" analisis.

    Wonderful List really
    But IMO my favorite Chinese film of all time will allways be The Curse of The Golden Flower, its the perfect balance between Wu Xia and intrigue, with a magnificent cinematography and a great use of colour

      It's probably one of the reasons why people know about the three kingdoms period, aside from playing dynasty warriors.

    • @AccentedCinema
      @AccentedCinema  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I might be in the minority here, but I find John Woo's Red Cliff to be technically well done, but badly written. It's my definition of "The Book is Better".
      Woo changes the story in multiple places so the characters fit into a more modern definition of heroism, to mix results.
      Still not sure why Guan Yu doesn't have his horse in the film.

    • @Thomazbr
      @Thomazbr 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AccentedCinema There are many interpretations to Three Kingdoms though. Half of the fun of a Three Kingdoms anything is how they differ from the original book. When you say "The book did better" I can also just say "At least some piece of media realizes that Zhou Yu might have been the most important man in that battle after years of Luo Guanzhong Shu bias". I find that Red Cliff is just a great epic. Great cinematography, great imagery, great battle scenes, generally fun interpretations of the characters and just a generally fun, if overlong movie.

    • @AccentedCinema
      @AccentedCinema  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Thomazbr oh I fully understand that is just my opinion. And I know I'm in the minority here.
      There was a Japanese-Chinese coproduced Romance of the Three Kingdom anime that attempts the same thing. I think it did a much better job and adjusting the silly elements from the book.
      Most notably, Kong Ming's summoning of the wind was justified with on extra line: he mumbles to himself: "I hope I'm right on this. "
      Thus, the anime is saying that he's not doing this with magic like the book suggests, but rather, attempts to look magic in front of their allies to establish his authority. I find that to be much more elegant than what Woo has done.
      After that, I just start nippicking everything apart from the films.
