Making people laugh is difficult. Entire industry of people spent their entire life studying the art of humor, yet no one is ever consistently funny.
Knowing this, makes Stephen Chow's career that much more impressive. The man has been consistently funny in near every movie he was in. Today, we'll learn from the master himself, and see how we can tell better jokes, with a Hong Kong flavour.
No, this is not the Stephen Chow retrospective I was working on. I still don't have all the Chow movies in my possession, yet. It's coming, though!

It is not that hard, just like cut out their faces and make them dance while you talk or something. Sucks, but thats the way the DMCA cookie crumbles.
There is other stuff you can do too, like pause the clip, actually talk about it maybe zoom it and actually transform it then resume after.
What about put the movie scene inside a crt tv with scanline effect...

Kung Fu Hustle is one of my all time favorite movies
Unfortunately for you westerns, Kung Fu hustle and Shaolin soccer isn't even his best work. It's middle tier at best. Though most of his best work is only appreciated if you understand Cantonese and the Hong Kong culture. Subtitles don't do Stephen Chow justice.

Nani Sarakam 4:55 *is the best, its fucking funny using modern swears in a movie based on ancient times, and they also reference "dragon ball" before it was even dubbed in english. The guy in white is gordon liu a FAMOUS kungfu actor in many hk films was on "the 36th chamber of shaolin" that inspired the smericns hiphop group "the wutang clan" and so iconic stars as stereotypical kungfu master in "kill bill"

I feel no one really has seen a Stephen Chow comedy besides Asians in Hong Kong, some parts of the UK, and some parts of the USA.
No joke, I don't think he's gotten enough exposure even right now as he reaches the end of his career.
Simon Pegg is a bit similar to Stephen Chow and he relies on gags before much like Chow. Chow treats his gags like a motif spanned throughout his filmography. While Pegg treats his gags like a motif spanned throughout a franchise.

Gintama is exactly the style of jokery Stephen Chow is doing. Similar in so many ways. Making people laugh by the sheer absurdity. Also by parodying a lot of other popular films just to get a giggle from the audience. The usual sarcastic and harsh language also adds an accent to the humor.

I wish that film got more praise from Western audiences since it's full of Western style acting, western references, and has a lot of western elements. Like how he's this eclectic sexy charming guy that women find irresistible or how he's super smart and has a skill that he worked really hard on.
Am Ugandan. Was given over 12 films by Stephen chow on a DVD when I was 11 and I immediately fell in love.
From then, I discovered the fascinating world of modern Asian movies.
Writer, director, producer and actor...that should have been too much for someone to take on, but he did successfully.
While everyone was taken up by Jackie, I was bored. Chow, to this day, is my favorite. Too bad he doesn't act anymore

Totally different style, Stephen Chow isn’t about stunt humour, he’s about bringing stories to the screen in a way the nonsensical makes sense to the weird quirks of the people of HK and for people who don’t understand come together through nonsensical humour
God Of Cookery is so good! Those 18 bronzemen crack me up every time. The three that just strike poses at the front while the rest of them just just give Chow a good old street beatdown... gets funnier each time they do it!

His jokes are those making people laugh and feel sad later. It’s essentially sad story told in a way of...joke (if it must be called joke). People see themselves in those “jokes”, which is called life.
I first discovered Stephen Chow with “Kung Fu Hustle” and promptly devoured his other films that I could get my hands on. So hilarious, I especially enjoyed “God of Cookery” and “Chinese Odyssey”.
A Chinese Odyssey - Part 1 and 2 are my all time favourites.

I was watching “Love on Delivery” on an overseas flight with my iPad and earphone on. It happened to get to the “Fifty Shades of Grey” scene and attracted my next seat passenger’s attention. She’s a Latino mother who does not understand Cantonese nor has she seen any Hong Kong movie. But just by reading the English subtitle she was laughing so hysterically that the flight attendant had to come over and check if everything was ok lol. Of course I had to share the screen and enjoy the whole movie with her and her daughter.
Stephen Chow is a legend. No analysis and systematic learning of what he does can replicate what he did.

There is a scene in "Tricky Brains" (整蠱專家) that exemplifies the absurdity and unpredictability of "Mou-lei-tau" comedy. In that scene, Stephen and Andy Lau were on their way to work and suddenly sang a song together, and the whole street suddenly danced with them, in a typical"Bollywood" fashion. Initially, the audience may not find this scene funny. However contrary to what most people expected, both characters didn't sing it in a "perfect-musical-styled" way: they sang out of tempo and couldn't keep up with each other's dance moves (the song had to be paused for a moment and Andy said "Wait a second, are you ready?"), and finally both of them fell from the stairs and one on top of another. The punch line came when another crowd chided "What a bunch of nonsense!" and both Stephen and Andy proceeded to say "Why are you watching us then? Idiots!"
I love Stephen Chow. Since I was a kid. He never fails to make the entire family laugh. We get all the jokes. Looking at this video makes me a bit emotional cause now we don't have such comedian and movies that have such energy as Chow.

I'm a Malaysian Malay and I don't understand Cantonese except for a few words but I grow up watching Stephen Chow's movies. My favourite one is The King of Comedy. that movie has everything and got bonus Cecelia Chung in it :P
Hats off to you in your attempts trying to theorize and explain Stephen Chow's jokes to the English-speaking audience. Even the Chinese audience who doesn't understand Cantonese can miss out a lot on his jokes. I personally think much of his "Mo Lei Tau" humour was strongly influenced by the Japanese manga, anime and the TV entertainment shows of the 80s and 90s, such as Dr. Slump, City Hunter etc since Wong Jing and Chow himself were big fans of these Japanese mangas. In fact, such a genre of humour continues to be prominent in today's mainstream Japanese entertainment ( the recent anime "Spy × Family" is a classic example of this kind of random sense of humour ) and it has even extended its influence to Korean comedy. My 2 cents 🙏

I know what do you mean. Many people outside Asia countries or Chinese heritage missed out his early movies and only exposed to his later works. For us his movies were a staple during Chinese new year celebrations since 80's.

As an Asian american, I didn't really know that much about Stephen Chow aside from Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer many years ago, but my wife (from China) used to introduce so many of Chow's movies to me while we were dating. Many of which I died from laughing. Great memories man. Last year, my wife was like "You have to see Flirting Scholar" and I did....and I died. :D

@@s20031102 Yes, that's a given. Many of my Cantonese American friends were already well versed with Stephen Chow's library of films as kids in the 80s and 90s, but I was not part of this group, so again, I did not experience this until Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle.

About the Mermaid, The Mermaid clip is actually referencing a very popular theme song from a very popular kung fu TV series from the early 80s. The show was The Legend Of The Condor Heroes, a Jin Yong Wuxia novel. The song was a bombastic duet between a man and a woman, but ultimately it's a love song, the title being "You're the best in this world".

To the author's point of genre bending and layers of jokes, if you get the reference then there's the layer of joke of the two characters breaking into song over dinner, the layer of the comedic singing, and then the layer of cultural reference where they are suddenly singing a song from an 80s Wuxia series lol.

I will never forget when I was a kid and my step dad rented Kung fu hustle thinking it would be like the 70’s and 80’s Kung fu movies he watched and instead we got the comedic genius of Stephen chow. I fucking loved that movie as a kid.
Grew up with Stephen Chow's movie since I was 10, now I'm 34 years old. I can proudly say, the world can neve produce another person of his credibility and discipline. A true grand master. He is a big deal in Malaysia & Singapore.
I find it interesting that Steven Chow and Tony Leung got into acting/cinema together but diverged in movie tones with Tony having more emotional/serious roles and Stephen with lighthearted comedy
also Tony found success way earlier than Stephen, he was teenager sensation, while Chau Tinh Tri (Stephen Chow's name in Vietnamese) became well known when he almost reached his 30

Totally agree on the joke timing. The couple's duet-gone-wrong really overstayed its welcome after its initial discovery. The mo lei tao stuff seems to generally work well when they come at a fast pace, which is no easy task since you'd have to chain one joke after another, and these instances have to be well-distributed in at least 90 minutes of movie time.
Love your videos, especially ones that analyze Stephen Chow's old movies, please make more of them. Stephen's chow genius is so underrated

Only in Western countries. In Asia, he was the king of comedy movies. Even his old movies in the 90s are still being watched til this day.
I won't say I watched every Stephen Chow's movie, but I've watched most of them and CJ7 is probably his worst performance.

God of cookery scene where there is a transition from a sweat drop to a tear from the flashback after he’s been beaten up by the monks to present time where he tears up in the cooking contest and that is both a cinematic mastery and a comedic mastery and made me realize he has been a geniius of his time

Stephen Chow is extremely famous in Vietnam. I think the Cantonese and Vietnamese share many cultural ties in terms of jokes.

I write novels. High on comedy. As a result I have had to sit through a great many people explaining to me why my jokes are funny and make them laugh... it's a writer thing. Never before has someone actually explained comedy and made it interesting. Until you. Good and entertaining analysis is as rare as Rocking Horse Shit, but you pulled it off. I tip my hat to you.
Stephen chow is one of the best actor and director in the world. Anyone who hasn't seen his movies (u will be surprised how many there are) will be hooked for sure if you watch even one of his movies. The best part is I can't even understand Cantonese and have thoroughly enjoyed most of his movies even without subtitles..

Stephen Chow is a talented visualizer too. He and his team work on camera angle and sequence build time. Recent vfx tech helps his films a lot. I’m loving it.

another thing that helps the jokes is the humor in the dialogue, which is a lot of the time non-translatable but showcases the essence of these movies that couldn't be replicated anywhere else.
My favourite is when a waiter tripped and grabbing a mop he wrote Calligraphy on the floor
my family loves kung fu movies, and when we discovered stephen chow's work we were obsessed. My dad downloaded all of his movies, and we watched EVERY SINGLE ONE. some several times. My personal favorite is Out of The Dark. this was years ago, and just recently we discovered him again and now are on a quest to rewatch all of his movies, and catch up on any new ones we've missed. He never fails to make me laugh.

Stepehn chow was the best of his times. His humor, acting and direction was awesom. I ve watched almost all of his movies and they all were superb.

Stephen CHOW was my childhood hero. I have never laugh terrible and awfully crying on Chow humor on his movies. His movies matches few Filipino movies "nonsense" jokes too. But really. HK movies in the 90s were King. They were advanced and ahead of all unique storyline, cinematic, diversity and incredible indie-like genre

I haven't seen The Mermaid, but I guess there is something in the relationship between both characters that somehow resemble Guo Jing and Huang Rong, that protagonist couple from the novel.
As a WuXia fan, that's an extremely hilarious reference, as you said, these are multilayered jokes, the fact that you hadn't seen the classic 80s HK adaptation from Jing Yong didn't preclude you from enjoying the joke as a whole.

Stephen Chow is just a great filmmaker who can turn the most absurd concepts and turn it into art.
his comedic somehow as absurd as Japanese comedy, but Chow version is more easy to digest and less cringy

From sad to comedy. He can be literally anyone. A dad, police, soccer player, kung fu master etc. The only one manage to make me laugh so hard.
His movie not only makes you laugh, they can make you feel emotions and cry. Love his movies.
