Nick D'Virgilio joins drummer Antonio Sanchez in the Sweetwater Performance Theatre for a special interview. Born and raised in Mexico and drumming since the age of five, Antonio explains how his passion for drumming and music progressed from there.
It's interesting to hear how Antonio approached music when he moved to the USA to study at Berklee College of Music. He talks about his interest in learning jazz, and his desire to take the fundamentals of jazz to other genres of music.
Antonio shares a great story about how he met jazz great Pat Metheny. Antonio had been experimenting with a trap kit accented with latin percussion pieces. Pat heard him from backstage and commented to someone that the drummer and the percussionist were playing very well together. When he learned that Antonio was playing both simultaneously, he soon invited Antonio to jam with him.
It was wonderful to have Antonio Sanchez visit us here at Sweetwater, and we hope you enjoy this interview as much as we enjoyed making it. Thanks for watching!

I first heard/saw Antonio on the concert DVD "Speaking of Now" and thought to myself I've never heard a drummer this good before. His jaw dropping duet performance with Pat Metheny on "Go Get It" took drumming to a whole other level, an equal to Pat Metheny's guitar. Truly an elite musician who eschews elitism and that makes him extra cool.

Pat Metheny had one of the best melodic drummers of all time in Paul Wertico. When U take an all time great's stuff and take it higher...Antonio Sanchez is probably top 10 of any genre, any decade. He is like a drummer+ percussionist fused together. Densest polyrhythms I've ever heard. He is to drumming what Michael Jackson was to dancing?

He moved to jazz for the IMPROVISATION TECHNIQUE! What he was up to then was confined and beautiful in their own sonic right! But innovation (jazz) frees you and forces you to CREATE! Just as painting and drawing which eye do. “Without art the world would be a mistake!” -Nietzsche...pure heART!
