Live from the legendary Scullers Jazz Club in Boston, WGBH Music presents three time Grammy Award winner Antonio Sanchez and the Migration band performing "Medusa" from Antonio's latest solo album, New Life. Antonio begins the show with a blistering five minute drum solo exacting an array of colors and sounds from his drums.
Sanchez was born in Mexico City on November 1st, 1971, the grandson of Mexican film star Ignacio Lopez Tarso. Sanchez became interested in the drums at the age of five, playing along to the records of The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Police and Rush. His professional career began in his early teens with a variety of local rock bands. After school, Sanchez pursued a degree in classical piano at Mexico's National Conservatory. Leaving Mexico City to enroll at Berklee in 1993, he graduated with honors and was the recipient of several scholarships, most notably the Buddy Rich Memorial Scholarship and the Zildjian Award. The New England Conservatory of Music awarded him another one to pursue a Masters in Jazz Improvisation.
He resides in New York City and his recent engagement inspired the title of his third solo album, New Life.

John Escreet - Piano
Matt Brewer - Bass
Dave Binney - Alto sax
What an amazing drum performance ! He is one of those once in a lifetime musicians. The little things he does with dynamics and body mechanics are so intricate and subtle if you have ever played the kit this is truly art at the highest level . I listen to this daily for inspiration and I’m always amazed. Beyond what should be capable on the instrument . Instinct fully his response to what the other great musicians are playing is so interesting it shows what an incredible talent he is as well as a monster listener with such great response choices to what he’s hearing and anticipating. A master !
Antonio's Quartet is really extraordinary...!!!! They are playing today one of the best Jazz worldwide... John Escreet piano solo is wonderful...!!!!
Pat Metheny in an interview I heard several years ago: "I didn't know a drummer like Antonio had been born yet." PERFECT! Nor did I, Pat; but sure as hell, he walks amongst us... and he's forever changed the spectrum of jazz drumming with some bold, vibrant colors. What an artist!!
Glad you liked it! Antonio is incredible!
He does everything so well, but watching his hands/technique is mesmerizing.
One of the best drum solos ever. Exemplifies the best of what a drum solo should be within a certain context.
and issss exactlly?
This performance is exquisite. I have to declare myself fan after listening to the Birdman soundtrack :,)
Thanks for your note. Does Antonio play on the soundtrack?
WGBH Music Yup, a pretty significant chunk of it, actually.
WGBH Music it was just a guy with the same name...
Judi Obeid

Art Blakey reincarnated with a doctorate in percussion.
Antonio Sanchez: Drums;John Escreet: Piano;Matt Brewer: Bass Dave Binney: Alto sax

Mr. Antonio Sanchez Grandioso!!!!!
That sax sound is like it's being transmitted from the moon in a nostalgia special... sounds terrific :)
That was the best drumming I have ever heard. Spectacular
Best jazz Ive heard in years. SPAC Jazzfest
Whew! That intro by Antonio was breathtaking, the sounds created in the drums tell you he studied thoroughly,he literally created melodies, awesome work by Antonio, and complemented by solo's by the alto player and the pianist really nice improvisation and interplay and to top it off the tension drive and release was there!
I'm not really a specialist, but the way the drums are mic'ed in this is freaking good, they kind of surround my head.
2019 y aun no supero esta obra maestra.
first the drum intro blow my mind, and then the sax solo did it again amazing
I love Antonio Sanchez! ❤💕😍😍❤💕
Now you understand why Pat Metheny says Sanchez is the greatest drummer in the world today.
do agree
It sounds really good! Antonio Sánchez a mexican drummer graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston
Beautiful modern music.
WGBH Music has passed 100,000+ views! Thanks for watching and big thanks to everyone who has subscribed!!
Antonio is a strong, fearless musician. Generational? Certainly has the pedigree.
David Binney is such a lyrical alto sax player, and this is awesome stuff by incredible musicians. Antonio Sanchez is becoming one of favorite younger drummers, along with Eric Harland and Dafnis Prieto. Of older drummers, Roy Haynes is still a deity, and Jack Dejohnette is great as ever, and Tain is my favorite of the last twenty years, but the young guys, and even younger-Chris Dave, Jamire Williams, Tyshawn Sorey, Mark Giuliana, are coming up fast. What a great period for great drummers!
Antonio es un baterista muy melódico y musical. Que orgullo que sea Mexicano :')
Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for leaving a comment!
You know you're badass when you START the show with a drum solo.
devastating drum intro
ye
!
I went to his show last night in Rotterdam...GREAT
Glad you enjoyed the video, Leonardo. Good tip on giving the crowd a heads up about the sponsorship messaging between songs. You might consider subscribing if you're interested in seeing more video from this show. I'll likely post another song down the road.
Saw Sanchez with the Unity Band in Lowell. Hope to catch them again this year.
Thank you for this excellent video. Like so many others, I became acquainted with Sanchez through his now long time association with Pat Metheny, both with PMG, and the Pat Metheny Trio. He is incredibly exciting to watch, and I daresay he holds his own against some of the greatest jazz drummers around, including Steve Gadd and Jack DeJohnette. I love his fluid style of playing. Again, thanks for this great video.
Wow ! Fantastic !
i saw yesterday his concert in merano..surely the best concert i was in the last years..awesome! thanks Anthony
I like the pianist's t-shirt. Fitting mantra for a musician.
David Binney plays some good music! And I like his dark tone.

Antonio rules!
Soooooooo good!
His right hand is actually an alien.
Funny...AND TRUE!...I met Antonio at a clinic at The Blue Note NYC in '05...Shook his hand...DEFINITELY ALIEN!!!:)
What was he like? I know folks who have met him at clinics and say that he's arrogant/rude. He kind of gives off that vibe in interviews.
dogmart After his clinic, he took time to meet and talk with people...He was nothing but kind and generous to me and actually signed my Modern Drummer with him on the cover!:)
Very cool to hear!
Magnifique !!

That explains it!!!
Antonio is a true modern master. Gretap playing by all!. By the way, that ride cymbal is really kaput! ( Still sounds fantastic) And what IS the sound engineer doing with the effects?...
Whether Dave B is fronting or supporting a song matters little, he is a terrific horn player.
how exactly is this possible?
haha... seriously. Amazing talent.
eyy antonio tremendo¡¡¡¡¡¡
They are fuckin’ jazz machine!
David Binney is an amazing saxophonist.
WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
wouldn't expect less from who made birdman's iconic drums
The intro reminds me so much of Bonham's Moby Dick solo from RAH 70'.
