    I'm nearly 68 years old, and grew up in West Texas (Permian Basin). I can't tell you how many times I have been to the Big Bend, and all through the Carlsbad/Guadelupe Mountains/Davis Mountains and Big Bend area. These are my favorite places in the world.
    In a nostalgic mood, I've been binge-watching Big Bend vids for several days, and just came across your this evening. I gotta tell you, I enjoyed this vid more than any other I have watched!
    Very professionally done! Your vid rivals something one would see on PBS! Your understanding of the elements of cinematography, your use of music, and your narration are top notch! I will be checking out your other vids as well!
    Thanks for sharing your adventures with us. I'm glad to have lived vicariously through your experiences!
    Oh, and, I really LOVE your rig! One of the most unique I've seen!

    Welcome to Big Bend! I've been there over 40 times, just about every year since 1979. You guys hit many of the good trails.
    When I die someday my family knows to take my ashes out to Big Bend. It is truly heaven on earth.
    Most of those years I camped in a tent.. but with my 4 wheel popup Grandby it sure is nice having heat now lol.

    Great video. Thanks for sharing. This refreshes my memories of prior visits to the BBNP and surrounding area. The dispersed camping is very enjoyable - you are a mile or more from the next site. Don't forget that the BB Ranch SP is "next door", another huge wilderness recreational area.
    This entire region makes a great "composite" destination offering a range of sights/things to do: Alpine (Lost Alaskan CG is great), Ft. Davis (McDonald Observatory and the actual Ft. Davis NP), Terlingua. Happy and safe travels to everyone - down here that means be prepared and 1/4 tank of fuel = empty.

    This brought back some great memories. About 25 years ago, some friends and I spent several nights at Big Bend - since the campgrounds were full, we did primitive tent camping, which was a bit over a half mile from the parking lot/pit toilet, and I remember that it was 10 miles to the nearest source of water. It was the best star-viewing of my life - I have never seen the milky way so clearly - it was absolutely spectacular. It rained one night and we saw all kinds of animal tracks near our campsite, and within 24 hours of the rain, the previously bare ocotillos had grown leaves.

    I always loved Big Bend, we went several times, but it’s been about 10 years since our last visit. Couldn’t believe the Rio Grande Village is now reservations only. When we used to go, campground was basically empty. And the trails😳, they were not groomed, boy has it ever changed. Not sure I would like going back, want to remember it with no crowds, and Ungroomed trails.

    We made that trip many years ago with our Lance camper and we have been wanting to go back. We now have a Lance 1985 trailer which is around 24' over all and our Super Duty is close to the same so too long for the higher camp ground. I do remember those uneven sites!! Too bad you could not go across to Boquillas cute little town. We also crossed to Santa Elena, not sure if you can still do that today. • @yougear
    @yougear 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Joe. You know you don't need to slam the door so hard. The rear's need a little more but the front's don't need that much. On an older rig it's a good ounce of prevention to save you from a future door hinge and latch replacement.

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Except that they do. Appreciate the advice but these doors won’t close properly otherwise.

    • @yougear
      @yougear 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Weretherussos Here's an experiment. Those trucks are so air tight. Try cracking the windows to alleviate the air pressure and see if they close with ease. If you still need to slam then its a latch adjustment in your future. Not expensive but just fiddley. I got 4 of the 99-16 Super Duties, 21 trucks in total, and you made an excellent choice. If you take care of the superstructure it'll last forever. Or. Perhaps we also need to take into consideration your superior upper body strength.

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks - the front ones aren’t bad but the rears definitely need to be slammed to shut all the way - even when I open the front door. I’ll take a look at adjusting them.
      What do you think of the 6.2 gas motor? If we get rid of this truck we may look at one of those.

    • @yougear
      @yougear 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Weretherussos So the 6.2 is great in my wife's 2012 Raptor, however, it is not a motor I would recommend on a RV with a load as heavy as your rig. In higher elevations it'll struggle and the mileage is not that great. If we ever get the new Raptor we are keeping the 12 and opting not for the new Supercharged V8, but sticking with the Eco Boost. We drive a lot of miles and like the range of vehicles with good mileage. If you go Gas the new 7.3 is an amazing motor and the 10 speed is excellent! It's the only Gas motor I would recommend for your application. However no one can sell you an extended range tank like the one you have now. EPA rules.
      Next time your in Vegas DM me and I'll show you all of them. I Love my 2000 F350 7.3, even though I'm picking up a 2021 F450, she will still be in service. If you go a broad I would beef up the motor and tranny and save the cost of a used Gas truck. IMHO.

    • @Weretherussos
      @Weretherussos  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The new 7.3 is the motor I would want but wouldn’t want the first year or two. Our biggest concern with our truck is that many of the components around the engine are starting to go. Replaced a blown PS pressure line and the output shaft seal and driveshaft ujoints this month. Not hard but I can’t carry an infinite number is spares if/when we go to S. America. That said, we love the truck so if we could get it to a point where we could rely on it overseas, we may go that route.

      @@Weretherussos Thanks, I'm trying my best. I would have been much worse of if I didn't have an RV. :-) Hope to start traveling again before summer... waiting to get my 2nd shot which is delayed because of the weather. I'll check in with you to see where you are in the world. :-)

    I especially appreciate your vid as we used to live on a ranch just inside the park entrance. Our hope is to return in the lance to visit the ranch and big bend. The ranch is the second right heading south just after the entrance booth. “Chalk Draw Ranch”. Y’all have fun!!!

    Loved the video! Such lovely views and places! The blue color in the sky, when Joe was down by the water and soon after Kait was there too, was gorgeous! The noodle dish was inspiring and that was a cute "traffic jam", near the end. 😉 Take care and God bless you!

    Looks like you haven't gotten your haircut for a week or two there Joe...getting a bit sloppy! BTW...you guys missed the best hike in the park, which is the trails up the mountain from the visitor center/restaurant in the basin. I liken it to hiking the Bright Angel trail in the Grand Canyon halfway down and back...except in this case you're going up, then down. Also, the figure 8 of trails up on top can be done by a strong hiker in one day including a side trip to the tippy top. Next time, maybe? Three days is hardly enough in that region. Also, if you like solitude and nice hikes/mountain biking...check out the state park "next door". The only bummer about that whole area is zero BLM land...you have to book and pay for a campsite every single night. Driving down there on a whim may be tricky in that regard. I did just that three years ago and got lucky...except for my last night where I crashed a backcountry site and the couple there were glad to have the company. Surprisingly beautiful place.

    Greetings Kait and Joe. It's been minute! Great video! Really enjoyed the gorgeous views combined with your narration. I'll bet the stars are bright there. Come driveway surf when you're in the Washington, DC area. Happy to offer sticks n bricks shower and whatever you need. Would love to see you again. Laurel, Daniel and Nutmeg (relocated from Menlo Park, CA) Oh, Joe, we have some solid coffee joints here. Daniel's fav being Northside Social.

      @@Weretherussos Nope, sold her when we moved here. We were trying to figure it out, having trouble making the logistic work and then out of the blue we got an offer we couldn't pass up. Many people want the features she has like no awning, no propane, etc. We loved her but now someone else is loving her no doubt. One issue we were having was the fact that I got diagnosed with sleep apnea and my setup wasn't fitting into the bed area nicely. So now I'm looking at different rigs online. But that's mostly just fantasy for the moment. Stay safe, stay well! See you down the line I hope.

    I probably would’ve gotten in trouble picking those Nopales (prickly pear cacti) for meal prep! I can make 3 wonderful Spanish dishes with those babies lol! The music you chose for this video was very appropriate, and it perfectly set the mood for all the awesome sites & majestic scenery in the background...well done!
    Always my best to you two 🥂
