Thank you! One of the better "scripts" for Big Bend - my favorite National Park. Two more things would be 1) a "once in a lifetime" kayak trip kayaking thru Mariscal Canyon (it is just a little difficult getting to a good put-in spot), and, 2) go to see the additional 300,000 acres at Big Bend Ranch State Park. You are exposing the best kept secret of the National Parks System!
Thank you! We tried to kayak Mariscal twice!!! But so many things did not go right. It is our top priority when we return. And yes! We got to see some of the state park when we went horse riding. It really is an absolutely breathtaking area at times, and feels almost more special by how untouched a lot of it is. I wish we lived closer
Big Bend National Park looks so gorgeous! I would love to experience the hot springs, and canoeing through the river past the canyon walls would be amazing too. But I think the star gazing at night in that kind of darkness would be the thing I look forward to the most. I have spent most of my life living in suburban areas where there are always streetlamps and well lit signage lighting up the night and it is hard to see many stars. I would love to spend a few nights out there and really get a good look at the night sky. You have some awesome footage in this video. Thanks for taking us along on the adventure!

Fortunately we live in Midland (West Texas) so it’s a fairly easy drive down to the park, which we have done several times. We usually stay a night or two in Alpine or Marathon before we go on to Big Bend. There is much to see and do in the Davis and Glass mountains as well. And don’t forget the Marfa lights and Fort Davis! I had a very close encounter (two feet) with a large male cougar one night at the Chisos Lodge in the mountains basin. We have also seen bears a few times up at the basin as well as javelinas, bobcats and mule deer down in the desert. Be sure and buy some copper wire scorpions at Boquillas and shout out a song request across the river to the ‘Happy Mexican’. He made the trinkets and the proceeds of sales help the Boquillas school on the Mexico side.
Oh that’s pretty close (considering!). The first time we ever visited Texas we went to all the National Park sites and other stuff in a big circle around the state. Fort Davis, Marfa (that strange Prada store!), Lake Meredith, Amistad, the missions and the Alamo, Padre Island and of course Big Bend. Such an interesting state, but we love west Texas the best. We met the “happy Mexican” I think - he tried to sell us trinkets while in our kayaks at the entrance to the canyon! There’s another guy who sells stuff near Hot Springs as well. It's funny you mention the wildlife encounter. When we were staying in the Guadalupe Mountains, I had an encounter with (I believe javelinas). Not fun.

I was a raft guide out there in the late 80's and met this amazing girl raft guide on a Santa Elena trip. 3 weeks later I asked her to marry me. Stopped by the store in Terlingua to buy a ring. That was 38 yrs ago and still going strong. I have seen Fern Canyon totally clogged with ferns and also scoured clean like a pot- an amazing place but incredibly harsh if you are not prepared.
Gotta do that next go round! The two times we visited we came along 90 and 10 from El Paso and Fort Davis. Really want to explore the state park more. We've seen a bit of the stretch you're talking about just past Lajitas. So beautiful
Just watched your video and really enjoyed it! As a native Texan, I have always lived in Texas. I've only been to Big Bend twice in my 68 years.....and both times it was flooding! First time on a bicycle tour in 2014, we got literally flooded out of two different campgrounds and had to take refuge. It rained 7 out of 9 days while cycling and camping, and was cold, foggy and just yuck...visability was less than a mile many days. I really wanted to abandon the tour. The second time I went was in Sept 2020 after they had a very wet period of rain. I drove this time and the desert and area was alive with blooming purple sage and other plants. Could not get into Santa Elena canyon because the road was completely flooded, did visit Boquillas and the river was really high. All canoeing on the river was off limits. There must be something about flooding and me going to Big Bend, lol. But yeah, it is an amazing area, going to try to get back out there soon. I have a slide show movie video on my youtube page if interested. The blooming purple sage was amazing,I think it's worth a watch. Plus the wildflower viedo I have from 2019 is pretty cool.
That is awesome. We don’t live close at all, but this was a special place. It sounds like you definitely had some bizarre weather! We’ve always gone in December so I have no idea what’s it’s like there other times of year. And yes I’ll take a look at your videos in a little bit. We’re about to release a video in a few minutes but I definitely want to see the purple sage!
I’m so glad I came across your video. I had no idea who is all of these things to do at Big Bend. I’m heading there today and hope to take one of those canoeing trips.
I found 1 company that’s doing kayaking trips to Black Canyon. I didn’t realize how hot it gets and in the summer months everything pretty much shuts down. I’m enjoying breakfast at a lovely cafe in the ghost town. Thank you again!
@@elizabethtipton4193 it’s not even the hottest months! We had a friend go in July a few years ago and he came back red and scaly with skin cancer. Either way, enjoy! Beautiful area. Absolutely love it there
OMG this park looks absolutely amazing. Love the clips and the explanation for each location. Light and save this video so that we have when we visit here.
Yup. The park is not a border crossing hotspot lol. You'd have to be crazy to try. Even if people could traverse the insanely high canyons of the Rio Grande, they'd still have hundreds of miles of nothing but harsh desert terrain. Whoever can do that, we need to make them a Green Beret. 😀
It’s one of our favorite parks in the US (so far). Summer is super hot, so definitely avoid that if you can, unless you’re okay with insane temperatures.
@@MagellanandGreyhound Two that stand out are a hidden hot spring spot most people don't know about and the Ernest Tinaja which you visited. I rode and camped the park on a dual sport motorcycle a few years back which is a great way to see many places in a short time that are more difficult to get to.
@@RanchoTexano awesome. Yes, that would have made it easier for us too. We were loaded with kayaks etc and couldn’t go too nuts. The one place we really wanted to kayak/hike was Mariscal Canyon, but we blew out our tires twice! It’s the hardest place to get to. One day!
Very cool! Haven’t seen much for videos on Big Bend National Park but it sure looks like a great place to visit! Nice to find places that are less crowded too! Have a great weekend!😀
Thanks! Part of the appeal, I think, is its remoteness. That would change if the park gets flooded, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. It's not a low-hanging fruit park. You have a great weekend too!

Absolutely. You are not only in the most remote place in Texas (and possibly in the US), but if you cross over the Rio Grande to Boquillas, you’re in the most remote place in Mexico. We have felt unsafe in many places, but this wasn’t one of them. Also - they are very sweet people. Get some tacos and a beer 😁

thank you for making this Amazing Video!!!! ✨✨✨✨🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤🌠🌠🌠🌠 Got a few questions!!! The Canoe...did you guys bring it along or was it there to rent? How to get permits to camp overnight? How hot is the water in the hot springs?
Thank you! We got the canoe as part of a tour guide. The outfitters are located outside the park. I don’t believe there’s any to rent inside the park. For the permits, we applied at the visitor center when we arrived. Definitely check the website because it’s very strict on what you need to bring and they checked us lol. For that trip we brought our own kayaks, which we don’t recommend. The hot water is hot! Not boiling, but close! It’s safe though, don’t worry. Hope that helps
I love camping in the wild = off-roading near old ore road near telephone junction. Once the sun goes down that’s when the fin begins. Few people have seen the sights of the universe but hitch a ride look at the sky and you will understand.
Yes it’s open year round. Just check the website beforehand for alerts. They did close it for a bit due to the pandemic but I’m pretty sure it’s open now.
@@MagellanandGreyhound As an Appalachian Trail backpacker, I know trail food. But Terlingua actually has great food! Of course most people would recommend La Kiva! I've been going there for years. I always get a NY Strip Steak and fries (because they only do fries which aggravates me, but...), but there are also other places. There is a small, local Mexican place that has some of the best Mexican food I've ever eaten. In particular their rice. It is pink in color and fabulous. It's on the south side of 170 but I can't remember the name of it. And we can't forget the Chili Pepper cafe! If you are interested in intrigue, La Kiva has some. The old owner was murdered by a local outfitter employee. He was there drinking "mind erasers." The old owner invented them. I've eaten there both under the old owner and the new owner from up north. The new owner has his own story. He invited me to tour La Kiva before it reopened.

I have seen Fern Canyon totally clogged with ferns and also scoured clean like a pot- an amazing place but incredibly harsh if you are not prepared.
That’s a great story! I bet the water levels were very different then too. Fern Canyon was easily one of the best surprise side trips we did.
I love BB Park. If you motorcycle don’t miss the river road west from Terlingua to Persidio. Fantastic ride.
Gotta do that next go round! The two times we visited we came along 90 and 10 from El Paso and Fort Davis. Really want to explore the state park more. We've seen a bit of the stretch you're talking about just past Lajitas. So beautiful
Great trip!
Thanks man!
this looks like an incredible great time
So incredible we had to go a second time! Definitely go if you get the opportunity!
Awesome! Thank you can’t wait leaving soon!!
That’s great! We are a little jealous. Have fun!
That’s great! We didn’t even cover everything haha. We weren’t very serious back then about making videos. We hope you get to paddle the river.
Absolutely love it there
Going there next December thanks for the insights
You’re very welcome! Hope you love it
OMG this park looks absolutely amazing. Love the clips and the explanation for each location. Light and save this video so that we have when we visit here.
Most underrated park in the country. Not saying the other ones are terrible, but this one deserves so much love
Beautiful place! Visiting here again. C u
Thank you! It's a magical place. 😀
I went here for 2 weeks one time..So Awesome
Oh man, two weeks? Yeah that must have been fun! We went two different times, about a week each. Really want to go back, but there's other parks ...
Thanks dude... be in the park tonight
Right on! Enjoy it. Love that park
Did you feel safe being so close to the border? )))
Such a nice place keep safe to your adventure😊💓👍

@@MagellanandGreyhound you're always welcome my dear friend
Beautiful share, amazing national park, fantastic weather, so relaxing video.
Have a wonderful day to you.

This is a great video! We are heading to Big Bend in a few weeks and your video gave us a lot of great ideas (especially that hot springs)
Haha you found an oldie but goodie. One of the most underrated parks and still one of our favorites. Hope you enjoy it!
Great video! We are heading there soon & needed some info. Much appreciated 💯
Thank you! Have fun! It’s a great park! 😁
Fantastic Vlog.continue like this, and do not give up.God bless you and your family
Thank you so much! To yours as well!
Thanks for all the ideas!! I'm planning to visit in October and hope to make my own youtube video!
Awesome! October is definitely a good time to go, especially because of the water levels. Although this year - who knows!? Have fun! It’s a great park
Great review. Thank you!
Hope it helps! Have you planned out a trip?
@@MagellanandGreyhound yes. We are going 2/9/23. Very excited. Thank you for great information

Great Video !
Thank you!!!! 🙏
Thus is awesome! and it looks very calming paddling through Santa Elena! I'll have to make the trek out to Big Bend soon!
It’s one of our favorite parks in the US (so far). Summer is super hot, so definitely avoid that if you can, unless you’re okay with insane temperatures.
Santa Elena was beautiful! I wish we had done some kayaking there.
Great video man. Going in a few months. Thank you
Awesome! I am partially jealous! Enjoy!
I hope to travel to Big Bend October '21. Great video.
Good time of year. Not oppressively hot! And thank you 🙏
My favorite video and my favorite park so far! -Greyhound
Can we go again?
Best video on Big Bend. Well done. Hope you get to go back and do some of the hikes someday
Thank you! It’s a very special place for us. We went two years in a row. What is your favorite spot?
One day!
Thanks. Very informative. My first visit is in one week.
Thanks! From what we’ve heard, the springs are still closed, but still do much to see and do. Hope you enjoy it!
Awesome video! You two are very brave. I love it. 🤙🏾
Haha thank you. It’s a very fun place!
The best adventure, this place looks amazing! What a trip you both had. We are for sure going to Big Bend.
And we will know when you do! 😀
Nice video!!! Beautiful!!
Thank you! It really is 😁
Great vid, very informative guys, thanks!
Thanks, that’s what we hoped for !
Thanks for the information ☺️
You’re very welcome!
Beautiful video and explanation of each site. Love your work.
Thank you so much! That means a lot! We try to give people the information we wish we had, if that makes sense.
Great content to explore the beautiful national park, spectacular view, amazing footage!keep it up and warm greeting.
Thank you so much! Glad to know you enjoyed it 🙂
@@MagellanandGreyhound hi,dear friend,do you know what is effective strategy to promote the TH-cam video to get more view ?I am struggling with that, any good advice?
@@UChdXYUyETGAeQi97QsEwoEg we are not experts, but make a good thumbnail that stands out, a good title, make sure to write a good description so when people search for your video, it shows up. Kind of like hashtags. You should look up SEO to help. When you release your video matters too. Ultimately, always try to make a better video than your last. Hope that helps!
Wow! This is stunning place to explore! Looking at all those rock formations and canyon it looks like it’s in Utah/Arizona! The antennas and tower at the top of the peak looks awesome, the sunset was spectacular! In California too, we have a fern canyon and it was huge! This place looks majestic. Thanks for sharing this under rated national park! Cool video my friends!
Suri, no joke, this place is the best. We're not just saying that because we went there and made a video. Definitely bump it up your list of places to visit.
@@MagellanandGreyhound Sure! I’ll do!
Did you feel safe being so close to the border? We have been concerned about this for a while. Thanks for any tips you and your readers can offer.
Very knowledgeable and great tips!
Thank you so much! Hope you get to visit!
great video! Just subscribed!
Thank you! We’ve gotten better at videos since. Hopefully you enjoy. 😊
Great footage and awesome views! Thank you for sharing this with us, we look forward to checking some of them out in the future. You’ve gained new friends from Florida ☺️

Y’all should have gone to Terlingua Ranch and eaten at the Rabid Rabbit Cafe. Great food good people. And I learned how to swim in the pool at the ranch lodge

BBNP has been on my bucket list for a few years now. And DB's is famous. Terlingua has a chili cook off every year that draws folks from all over, too. That's for sharing guys. Good to see you again.
We visited the park TWICE if that's any endorsement. And I am trying to convince Greyhound to go again. We had no idea DB's was famous. It was damn good though!
Sounds like this vegetarian would get in some trouble at a chili cook off too. 😉 Thanks for stopping by Steve! - Greyhound
@@MagellanandGreyhound Well, I say it's famous cos I heard of it. Counts a little don't it. Hahaha

This is such a good video! When did y’all go to Big Bend and for how long? I’m thinking about going soon :)
We went years ago, two different times, in December. Maybe 5-6 days each time. The first trip was basically kayaking Boquillas. And thank you! Old video of ours but a goodie.
This place looks awesome! You guys have all the fun! Never been to Big Bend before but it is now on my list of future places to hike and explore. Heading to the Badlands soon and can’t wait to explore that area. Loving your videos
Can’t recommend it more highly! Probably our favorite park … so far! Badlands is on our list. Can’t wait to see what you do. We’ve been crushed with work and injured from hiking so we are looking to explode this year 🤣

Im from Texas and just got back from Yellowstone and Grand Teton, this place doesn’t look like much compared to the other parks, wondering if I should still go…. Nice vid
Thank you! We think it’s worth it, but I get what you mean. People love visiting places in the northeast, but it’s more ho-hum to us because we live here and are used to seeing it. Yellowstone/Grand Teton we are hoping to go next year!
I loved your video and shared it to my group called the Hikerbabes! How long did it take you to to Emory peak and the South Rim. Last year I did Lost Mine and it was beautiful. I was thinking of averaging 30min miles with eating and water breaks? thanks for your help
Thank you! It’s been awhile now, but I remember that it was an all day kind of thing. 8-9 hours at least. Started around sunrise, ended around sunset (it was December so the hours were short.) At that pace you should be fine if you start early. Lost mine is in our list when we go back!
Great video.. very informative.. One small correction: Study Butte is pronounced “Stew-de byoot" Looking forward to exploring more places through your videos...
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed. It is my hope that our videos have improved a lot since this one. I will never say Study again. Stewdee Byoot rolls off the tongue better 😁 Usually we learn by hearing the locals, but that wasn’t one we had heard.
I have watched your video several times. I just love it. I am going to Big Bend this Thursday. Are the springs open now? The website says still closed but I know they are slow to update. Can't wait for more of your adventures.
Thank you! From what we have heard, yes, they are still closed, which is a shame. How long are you staying and do you live close to it? We are excited for you and miss it a lot. It’s a great park, but we live nowhere near it.
@@MagellanandGreyhound thank you for the reply. I live in N Ga but I am in Corpus Christi TX visiting my daughter and her family. @@lifeworthliving4491 Happy Birthday in advance! It will be a great trip. Hopefully you visited Padre Island! And thank you, it’s been tough for us as I’m sure it is for many people. @@MagellanandGreyhound Thank you. Padre was last weekend.
Debating on taking a 3 day trip out there but I live in south Texas but damn this place is still 9 hours away 😳
It was 32+ for us 😂. But seriously, check it out if you get the time. I think one of the reasons it's not as visited is because it's far even for Texans like yourself haha
Play the song "Gringo Honeymoon" by Robert Earl Keen, as you canoe down the river! You will never forget the experience.
Just listened. Very fitting lyrics !
When did you go? Is it always so desolate/colorless looking?
December both visits. Pretty sure it's a little greener during Spring/Summer, but it's still a desert area so I can't imagine that much.
Look at that FLAT HORIZON!
Texas is great for those !
"If you like...stargazing"

I’m not sure if I missed this on the video but how long were you in Big Bend?
You didn't miss it! - but to answer your questions, we went two different times. First trip was 5 days - Ernst Tinaja, Hot Springs and 3 day overnight paddle through Boquillas Canyon. Second trip was a full week - 2 day Santa Elena Canyon paddle, Hot Springs Canyon paddle, Emory Peak/South Rim hike, Upper Burro Mesa hike, Old Terlingua ghost town, two separate horse rides (Big Bend State Park and Terlingua) ... I think that's it. It was awesome and packed! And plenty left to go back and do 😀
Thank You..
You’re welcome - don’t know why, but hopefully we helped you with something 😊
thank you for making this Amazing Video!!!! ✨✨✨✨🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤🌠🌠🌠🌠
Got a few questions!!!
@@MagellanandGreyhound yes... thanks a lot for the information!!! Keep rocking 👍

Amen!
Hey thanks for the video, do you know hot spring is open in November -December?
Yes it’s open year round. Just check the website beforehand for alerts. They did close it for a bit due to the pandemic but I’m pretty sure it’s open now.
Very good video. Now I think I should do river trips there. (There are better places to eat than the Starlight Theater).
Thank you! Our favorite moments were on that river. We were mostly eating “trail” food haha, we didn’t get to eat much else while there. Except bbq. 😂
@@dannylgriffin oh La Kiva. I do remember seeing that! That’s a crazy story. We loved Terlingua. It’s such a cool little town
@@MagellanandGreyhound Terlingua is a cool town. It is a place people go to to escape. That's for people who live there, but I feel the same way as a tourist. I live in Michigan and I go there to escape. Although I do some hiking in BBNP, I mostly go there to 4WD and just get away from everything. I could tell you more about La Kiva but you didn't ask. The next time you are there, stop in, order a NY Strip Steak. :) It's about the same price as Texas Roadhouse or Longhorn Steakhouse. Maybe a dollar or two difference.
@@dannylgriffin oh I’m going there for the steak - 100% - where in Michigan? We love Michigan
My husband and I hiked to the Window when we visited Big Bend. I really enjoyed it. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤. It took us 9 hours to drive there from Houston.
