    Mark McClinchie is a real estate agent in #Pittsburgh PA with Compass RE. I am a retired public school teacher and principal, and have first-hand experience and inside knowledge of area school districts and programs. I grew up in the northern suburbs of Pittsburgh (graduated from North Allegheny), and now live in Mt Lebanon with my amazing wife and four children (one in college and three in Mt. Lebanon schools). I love travelling (especially to Disney), great food/drink (coffee snob), and love playing/watching sports (PNC Park is the BEST).

    Good areas Mark. Was originally from Mr. Lebanon and my entire family lived there. Awesome place to live. Close to everything and lots of nice homes in Mt. Lebanon. They have the best fireworks on the 4th of July. Excellent high school football team. My dad helped build the stadium. Seen many exciting football games there.

    I lived in Mt. Lebanon from 2011-2017 and worked at Aladdin's. There's no suburb like it in the Pittsburgh area. Easily walkable, nice shop and easy to get to downtown or shv via the T. I commuted to college from Mt. Lebo for 3 years.

    So my question is, which suburb gets the least amount of snow since I have only lived in an area that only gets a couple of inches of snow at one time? I've only lived in an area that has only gotten a few inches and by mid-day the snow has melted and the roads are clear. My husband and I are thinking of maybe moving to a suburb that has big yards and plenty of nearby forests.

    • @markknowspittsburgh
      @markknowspittsburgh  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Snow isn't too bad in the Pittsburgh area. Check out this video - th-cam.com/video/dU8hx-eneIg/w-d-xo.html. Most suburbs within Allegheny County probably similar amounts of snow. But further suburbs to the north in Butler County will typically get more snow than the souther suburbs in Washington County. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.

    I grew up in Mt. Lebanon in the late 1960's until I moved to Florida in 1986. Lived on Cedar Blvd. Directly across from the ball fields. There were 3 in succession back then. Not sure they are still there. The high school, pool, ice rink, tennis courts and basketball court was all within walking distance of a few minutes. We could watch the fireworks on the 4th of July from our front porch! I still feel sad for leaving. But had to come to Florida with family when my dad got transferred and I wanted to help out. I haven't been back to Pittsburgh since 1999. I am sure much as changed. Before I moved to Florida, I worked at a Ground Round restaurant on Washington Road. I think it is gone now. But one night I made chicken wings for Lynn Swann and Mike Webster!

    Here's my sitch: My father died a few years ago, didn't leave much money, and we're getting ready to run out. My mother only gets around $360 after paying for Medicare, so she's dipping into the $13,000 remaining in savings to cover what that $360 doesn't cover, so it's around 1300-1400 a month. We have about 10 months before the money runs out.
    I'm disabled, and I can't get work where we live in southern Georgia because of it. I have a life-threatening photosensitivity disease and must wear an all-leather outfit just to leave the house. I need to move up there just to find work I can do, but that can only happen if my mother sells the house and comes with me. At best, my mother might make 40k selling the house but she's slow to do anything, so I'm guessing she might get only half that by the time she gets around to it, due to the emerging shift in the housing market. So that means enough cash to cover 1 or maybe 2 years of living expenses, including leases. I know from past experience that I can't move up there if I can't cover at least a year of expenses without working.
    I have no verifiable rental or work history because I've been trapped in this situation with them for decades. That means I have no real chance of getting into a place on my own, so she has to move with me to secure a place in her name or stay here and secure a place and pay the rent while I find work gainful enough that I can take over the lease. I can't live with roommates on account of my condition, and I can't survive in the hood. We both need to be in a safe neighborhood near downtown (if she comes with), preferably in the triangle, due to her age/medical requirements and because it will make things easier for me workwise if I'm equidistant from everything.
    All I have experience in is light industrial labor, so that limits my options quite a bit. It also means the warmer months will be most difficult, as I might not be able to work at all. Because of the leathers and my size (220 pound bodybuilder frame), I can't really work in any labor environment with a temperature above 65 degrees, or be out walking around when it gets warmer than that.
    Any suggestions of what I can do to make this transition more survivable? This is the end of the line for me. It's literally do or die. I don't have anywhere else to go, anywhere else I can go, and nothing to fall back on if I fail. I will just end up homeless and dead if I can't make this work.

      The only Pittsburgh is spelled with an H. And the Pittsburgh metro region has a population of 2.5 million. We have three major sports teams (Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates) along with a dozen universities, hospitals, and Fortune 500 companies.
      Pittsburg, Texas has a population of 4500. Lots of Pittsburg towns out there as well - California, Florida, Kansas, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, and several others.

    Which suburbs doesn’t mind people of color moving in? I’ve been wanting to move to Pittsburgh but I heard it’s very racially segregated.

    • @markknowspittsburgh
      @markknowspittsburgh  ปีที่แล้ว

      The views of an entire community being accepting and welcoming to people of color with any amount of accuracy is probably impossible to identify. Pittsburgh (like many metro areas) does have divided communities and within those communities there are incredibly open and caring individuals and I would suspect there are also some folks with ignorant and biased tendencies. There are communities where statistically people of color are in higher proportion to others but that doesn't necessarily answer your question. My suggestion would be visiting first hand communities to get a feel for the place.
