- Samhain - an ancient Celtic Festival - is approaching so it is time to visit the local graveyards. We have two here, an old one and a newer one. This is the time of year to be remembering our ancestors.

I was just telling a person about a Slavic tradition ‘Dziady’ which translates to ‘grandfathers’ ‘forefathers’ or ‘elders’. It’s part of the ancestor veneration Slavic tradition that is traced to Slavic paganism. In Slavic culture, we remember, honor and celebrate our dead ancestors in both the spring and fall seasons. I remember always visiting the graves of our relatives during those times with my entire family. We’d bring food and drink with us, and we would all sit around the gravesite together as a family, eating, drinking, and sharing with our dead relative all of the news. We’d also introduce the newly born family members to our dead relatives. Food and drink would also be set aside for the dead relative, along with fresh flowers Around that time the entire cemetery will be full of families doing the same thing. Thank you for sharing this with us. A wonderful video. What you were saying about how it was the locals that would bury the person is exactly how it was in Russia. I don’t know about now in modern days, but when I was a little girl which was about 30 years ago, it was a custom in Russia for the dead person to remain in the family house for a day and night, and it was the family that washed the dead person and got him/her ready for burial. And like you said the entire neighborhood would send them off. Just like the entire neighborhood would welcome a newborn
WE do the same - we wake the dead at home, at least we do here in the west. It just shows that if we go back far enough there were connections between people long ago.
What beautiful content. Terri. I'm going for woodland burial and am thankful it's an option these days. Unlike the burials you show in the heart of the community, the whole process of death is an industry generally. I think we've forgotten how to bury our dead, how to acknowledge and accept death as something natural and inevitable - a part of life. Thank you for putting the love back into 'Halloween' which has become a ghoul-fest and big money spinner, instead of a celebration of the love which crosses all boundaries and dimensions.
Yes, this. We have a place here in Ireland that is an all natural burial I think in Wexford. Love it.💚

Beautiful words and sentiment Lyn, people have become so scared of the end of days that is has turned into a kind of taboo and hidden from. I know im guilty of it but this video and a lot of comments have helped me adjust so thank you.
Every year at Hallowtide, (which is April for me), I take myself on a pilgrimage to ancestral graves. After much sleuthing, I found my great great Irish grandmother in an unmarked grave. I sat with her and spoke as if she was sitting with me. I’ve sat with my convict ancestors and many others. I always visit my Cornish great grandmothers resting place and leave an apple as was the custom. It is one of my favourite things to do. When I went to UK, I think a day did not pass without me seeking out graves 😁 thanks for sharing! 🙏🏻☘️

The night before my mom's funeral . After they had dug the grave they all pulled out and we were informed that they would not cover her.So my great Uncle pulled ropes out of his pickup. Several family members put on their gloves and grabbed their shovels. She was lowered with ropes and covered by family. It was the right way, looking back. Thankyou for sharing the burial code. Thankyou this was very heart warming for me.🥀🥀🥀🥀
I believe it was the right way. Who pulled out and why would they do such a thing?? How upsetting for you, but it turned out very well.
@@DanusIrishHerbGarden My Aunt and Uncle gave us a casket for her and the State said it did not meet code. The Funeral Home was involved also. There just happened to be a small political group in town. So my Aunt talked to the representative then it was my turn.. oh and we weren't invited to the party we invited ourselves. Of course I'm sure you no how that went. Zero It turned out the way of my ancestors. Celtic on my dad's side.I definitely

Beautiful scenery while biking. Love the tradition of a community doing the grave, gives a sense of closure for all involved. I can imagine someone telling story or two of the departed while the grave is dug. That would be a wonderful send off to the next realm. Thank you for sharing.
If the person is old there are stories but not at the grave, the Rosary is said. The stories are told at the Wake.
Thank you for telling us about the traditions and practises of burial in your community both past and present. Learning about different traditions of people living in various parts of the world is a start to understanding and acceptance. Thank you for taking us along to the cemeteries.

When I was about 12 I used to just sit in the graveyard that was close by where I lived; sometimes for hours. It's probably really weird but it was so peaceful there!

You depicted the meaning of Samhain so beautifully. Thank you for not bringing the “spookie ookie into it”. I do believe as well that it a time of Remembrance and respect for all that have come before. My parents are buried two hours away from where I am and I have a difficult challenge in being able to get there. So I have a memory garden which I tend to and place memory stones and offerings and have a it of a ritual around Samhain in remembrance of and connection to them. Those are heartwarming ways you have there for burials… so much better than the commercialized ones we can seem to not be able to get away from here nowadays. Be well sweetie.

Beautiful burial customs. I love visiting graveyards. They’re peaceful and quiet. They’re are some very old burial sites not too far from me that go back to the late 1600s.
They offer a great place to sit and get things into perspective. x

Is it similar in Wales?
Thanks for this one. I enjoyed the bike ride. I'm a walker and not a bike rider but I remember my bike riding as a kid. Cemeteries are such interesting and special places. Here in this village our cemetery is right in the forest, so graves between forest trees. Essentially people here are buried, as a congregation, in the forest. Your 'place' is so interesting, with a beauty about it because of how natural it still is. One village graveyard, about thirty miles down the lake from this village, has a strong haunted feeling about it. That graveyard started with hardluck silver miners, prospectors and logging folk that lived hard trying lives. I've been in First Nations graveyards in this country and they always have a different feel about them as compared to white settlers and immigrant folk cemeteries. One of my old acquaintances, here in this mountain valley, was cremated. We, a few friends and neighbours, scattered Jim's ashes (Jim was Scottish and a prospector) in the forest near where he had a favourite cabin. My (long dead now) aunt, scattered her husband's ashes from the deck railing on a ferry, crossing from the mainland to the Vancouver Island, so Walter's in the Pacific. It's interesting how people deal with their dead. I guess there are as many ways to bury and cremate a person as there are sects of various religions. My dad, who died from covid back on January 26th, 2021, was cremated. So dad's ashes are sitting in a receptacle in my mum's bedroom. With covid restrictions dad spent his last days in misery in hospital. No one could go to see him, he was alone. When he died there was a nurse there but that seems almost cruel that no family were allowed to be with him. But covid is cruel and heartless, so we understand.
I agree that death rites and ceremonies are very interesting. I love the fact that in some places in the Himalaya, they have sky funerals where they leave their dead on mountain tops and the eagles come and eat the cadavers. This is done because they have no depth of soil for burial in the earth and no wood to burn for cremation. I am sorry to hear of the passing of your father and that he was alone. That was a disgrace and an abuse of human rights in my book, nothing to do with a virus, solely to do with management from the top down. I hope you and your mother are getting on ok.

I lived 1100 miles away when my aunt died. When I came back to visit the cemetery I had her grave location information from the cemetery . After visiting my grandparents grave I found the specified location. It was a different Julia Butler. I walked back towards the road and found another Julia Butler, also not my aunt, and I gave up my search. I had no idea that her name was so popular .
How frustrating to have gone so far and not find it.
What a wonderful way for people to serve the mourning family.
I don't believe in saying "loss one" because they're not lost.
They have departed to the other side of the veil, waiting for our return home.
IT is and yes, they are not lost, just out of sight.
This video touched something deep inside me. Seeing the older cemetery that dates back to famine times made me think about my Irish ancestors, who might be buried in places like that. The way you described neighbors digging the graves was very moving.

That's a shame as the cemeteries end up very uniform. The older ones have interesting markers as they are all quite different.

What a beautiful Video. I've just begun really learning about Samhain. Every country has its own death culture. In Mexico, it is Dia de Los Muertos (The Day of the Dead). In many parts of Asia, every service in a Buddhist temple has an element to remember, respect, and honor the dead. At most major Buddhist festivals, there's the ceremony for the feeding of the Hungry Ghosts, (those who have died and had an unfortunate rebirth into the ghost world). Your Vlogs really help. Thank you so much. I went to a cemetery last week, one that goes back to the early 19th century. I'm also Buddhist so I went for sitting and walking meditation on death and the impermanence of life as well. Lots of Love from America PD

Thank you for sharing Terri. I love learning more about the Celtic festivals, as they resonate more with me than the modern day celebrations of today. How beautiful to see your families final resting grounds...and to hear about the local burying customs. (Here in Canada the whole funeral industry is unionized and corporately motivated, making it near impossible for families of the deceased to have any input other than writing a cheque!) On a positive note, I feel very fortunate to have my Dad, brother and paternal relatives graves in driving distance...so I will be making time to spend some time with them during these days of Samhain.
That is a shame Trinalea as death is such an important part of life, for everyone in the family, not just the deceased. Enjoy your visits. xx

I love this video. It is a reminder of the natural process of life, and dead is part of it. Also the respect and appreciation we should have for each other, even at the end of life.

I would say we are but I understand that many people make their living in tourism. It's a double edged sword!
What a wonderful installment Terri. I find that the best way to learn about a community is by starting in the graveyard. The traditions of your home are beautiful. Why does nobody maintain the graveyard where your grandmother lies?
Some graves are maintained and lots of people visit them at this time of year but there is no "maintenance crew". Some graves have no family near by so they can look quite neglected but it is the natural way of things

Such a beautiful and wild place, I was drawn to the mountains in the distance, this video made me think I will get my mums photo, and bring it to the table in the kitchen this week, she can sit with me while I knit my first grandchild a something which will hopefully will reveal its self to me soon, 😊😄 not much of a knitter, although I’m determined by the time it’s needed I will have mastered a jumper.

Congratulations! I've just finished knitting myself a little jumper but the neck line hasn't quite turned out. Good luck with yours. Bringing photos of our departed onto a table or a place where you can see them is a lovely thing to do at this time of year, especially to help with the knitting!!!
I don't think too many Americans realize how disconnected we are from our ancestors having immigrated from wherever each of us are from. Even though my maternal grandmother and great grandmother are buried in America, they are 3 hours away and then my paternal grandmother is buried in a town in New York over 2 thousand kilometers from where I live. I think most Americans take too much for granted and do not think about the many shoulders upon which we stand.
Unfortunately that is the same everywhere although more people are looking back to the old ways so perhaps things will change.

This was lovely. It reminds me that I should make a trip to visit my deceased this week; at least my parents and grandparents. I wish that I could visit my great grandparents graves but they are located in the city and the area is considered dangerous. People are told to only go there with a police escort. I guess there are a lot drug addicts and such. And at one time there was a sniper shooting at people who visited there. I've always wanted to come upon a big pile of money so I could have them all moved to a safer location.
That sounds so scarey - a sniper shooting at people visiting a grave yard?? This is the time of year for visits - All Souls and All Saints in the Catholic calendar.

Whenever I go on holiday I always look for the cemetery. So much history, so many spirits. Thank you for this visit. =-)
They are so fascinating aren't they.
We have many "green" burials in the USA. Bodies are placed in white shrouds or just a plain pine box. There is a body farm and one state has a yearly pyre. No chemicals needed for any of these. Even cremation uses chemicals. So glad we have the choice.

Amazing that the graves are still there...my great grand father and babies were buried on the woody edge of the farm..since then the land was parcelled off n the graves are gone....my other grands graves were purchased by a developer with other acreage and nothing remains just cement and high rises😣 I was a child visiting and still remember where they were. as a teen when this started happening I was unable to fight for the grave yards..you are blessed
That is so sad and disrespectful, sorry for your loss.
Here in the US we use heavy machinery equipment (an excavator) to bury people. It’s very loud and unsettling, especially during mourning.

A beautiful video. Thanks Terri. Many of my ancestors are buried at Murrisk Abbey under the shadow of Croagh Patrick. I don't know if it is the same in your graveyards, but normally graves face east. In the case of Murrisk they all face west so that they can 'enjoy the view' of Clew Bay!
Making this I assumed they faced West towards Tir na Nóg but then I realised in the old graveyard they were facing south west and in the new graveyard they are facing north west! I think it depends on the lay of the land and our local undertaker told us that it is different everywhere.

It was a delight to see the more country or older graveyard versus the more modern one, and I must say that each has its own raw beauty and specialness about them! I am looking forward to the next one Terri! I'm curious if you are carving a pumpkin or a turnup. I heard the Irish legend a while ago about carving turnups as Jack-o-lanterns before it caught on with pumpkins

So lovely to see that your part of Ireland is so unspoilt by tourism. So peaceful, it used to be like that here in Wales, sadly so many local cottages have been sold off as holiday homes, preventing local young families from affording homes now. Such a lovely place for the departed to rest where you are.
Actually, almost two thirds of the houses here are holiday homes and we have the same problem re young couples and families and don't get me started on the Planning Permission racket!!!!!! But otherwise, at this time of year, it is very peaceful.x

I talk to my ancestors all the time ⏲
I also make them their favourite drinks and food I make and I put cling film over the food so flies don't get on it and to keep the food fresh the flies come in when I have my windows open its a nuisance but I don't like to kill them as they're innocent and Don realise what they're doing is right or wrong so it's not their fault I also bring my ancestors flowers and other gifts like cookies and cake my all time favourite animals and birds are Crows and Ravens bats Black cats and 🦭 and 🐬

What a lovely funeral tradition of the village burying one of their own ,but not for me being shut in the cold and the dark even when dead holds no attractions ! Heat ,fire and ashes scattered to the winds will suit me fine 💛💜
It is a very local tradition, not sure it if is done elsewhere. I thiink of it as being snuggled up close to the Mother rather than shut in the dark.

Such a beautiful cross marker for your grandparents. Have you ever thought of placing a small piece there in front of the cross with their names and what it says on the cross to help preserve the words in case they fade from off the cross due to time and the elements? I love this time of year and I love reflecting back in time thinking about my grandparents and their parents and so forth as well, giving Thanks knowing that they are the reasons we are here right now.
