- Andy McGrath is known for his work in the cycling world, both as an author and a journalist. "Bird on the Wire" is a book by McGrath that delves into the life and career of Tommy Simpson, one of Britain's most famous cyclists.
Simpson was a world champion and the first Briton to wear the yellow jersey in the Tour de France but tragically died during the 1967 Tour de France.
McGrath's book offers a detailed exploration of Simpson's career, his impact on the sport of cycling, and the circumstances surrounding his death, shedding light on both his achievements and the darker aspects of professional cycling during his era. His book, which was winner of the prestigious William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award has been praised for its thorough research and engaging narrative, contributing significantly to the historical understanding of cycling and today Anthony chats with Andy about his research on the book.

I worked at Harry Hall cycles for 5 yrs in the early to mid nineties .Harry was the GB machanic on that years tour de France and helped Tom Simpson off his bike , if you look at the footage he was wearing a white top . Apparently it affected Harry for the rest of his life . Rest in peace Harry , you were a lovely man .Ps Harry Hall also became the world masters road race champion , he also sponsored Robert Millar , Paul Sherwen etc .Maybe you could do a programme on him ?
oh wow. Lovely to hear a bit more about the background and I've rewatched some clips and saw Harry Hall.
Harry Hall cycles in Manchester has recently shut for good after 67 years of trading!☹
Is it just me seeing/hearing a young Chris Martin 💁🏼♂️
What an incredible book, i also had the pleasure of meeting Andy and he is so knowledgable and a true lover/historian of the sport.
People forget Tom finished 4th in the 59 worlds after only being a pro a few months.
This was such an awesome conversation! Thanks a lot for that!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Interesting to reflect on what Sky was.
Author does not remember details
Cycling is my life...fantastic read...❤
incredibly poignant reading Tom's hopes for the seasons ahead.
More charismatic characters. Less PR staff. Cipollini, Lance, Hinault, Coppi, Cav, Simpson, etc bring the masses
Great to see Anthony doing so well with the Podcasts. Miss the auld A1 show though, especially with the updates on the domestic racing front . Loved how ya got A LOT of Attention for the Lemond Interviews . Only other really good job on Lemond was the old team from Off The Ball on Newstalk (radio)
Love cycling history! 🫶
I thought Fotheringham and Sidwells had covered the story very well.....How many times does this story need re telling?
Can you interview Professor Thomas Seyfried ?
I saw a comment on a FB cycling group where Barry Hoban made a comment and I had to ask, are you THE Barry Hoban and he said The one and only.
I pooped my pants with that reply. Bonkers 😁
put me back on the bike
OMG, the nazi analogy was terrible for Tom Simpson. Simpson's tragic death and the knowledge of it never made me want to criticize the man. It always made me want to know more about him. Still have my selfie in front of his memorial on Mt Ventoux.
No. Listen to what he said or asked carefully.
In the art, music, film, architecture , sport and other industries, it contained many great Germans . Look at all the major car companies and fashion houses and even a drink (Fanta) have links to that regime. Some of them did many great things before the crazy stuff happened. It tainted their reputation. Albert Spears was probably a fine architect and visionary. After the war, they were dirt .
Obviously there were some Nazis , unapologetic ones, got a decent life . See the Joe Lewis scenario. Bet the famous German boxer , a Nazi (whether he was a genuine one is neither here nor there ) Lewis died almost broke with the IRS coming after him. The German got a big big job with a major US Corporation and lived comfortably . The hero was ignored and the “villain” championed .
Now in cycling , doping should make you a pariah and everything that they did should be tainted (of course that might be a harsh attitude )
As for Mr Simpson, yes, his life should be fairly assessed but it’s a nonsense to glorify and mystify a doper . He should be a warning sign for young riders .
The guest, being the intelligent and thoughtful man that he is , explained it perfectly. he rightly pointed out that doping didn’t have that stigma so the reference to Nazis was wrong . Says it all about the sport .
Oh, and he’s right about Italy and Spain. Spanish and Italian SPORT are too relaxed about doping .
Antony wasn’t trying to put Simpson in the same circle , might have been a wrong analogy , but he wasn’t comparing . He asked a question. Anthony would have been very anti doping but has given Tyler Hamilton and David Miller a lot of air time (hey , they have a good story )
I’ll have to get this. I just finished Andy’s book about VDB and it was great.
Oh man, ANOTHER Simpson book I'm gonna have to read 😁
Its amazing how much Tommy Simpson achieved in his short time as a pro cyclist. Nice to see his achievements being remembered by Andy, we needed to be reminded of his story.
I had a conversation with the mechanic who put Tom Simpson back his bike after his first fall on that day.
Lucien Aimar is the oldest living tour winner.
Both great riders - but Jan Janssen is a year older than Lucien and still with us
@@andymcgrath327 Correct! I guess I was assuming the rider who won the earlier race was older. Doh!
Great interview. I am glad I found your channel. 🥰
Brilliant discussion, Anthony. Top man, Andy is.
Prior to lockdown Chris Sidwell (Tom's nephew) was pretty passionate about Tom and had a lot of memorabilia.
He still is. He's an experienced journalist and does a lot to keep his uncle's memory alive.
@@andymcgrath327 good to hear 👍
Amazing chat ☝️
Very clickbait titles to your videos (unlike the pods)
Unfortunately this is the nature of TH-cam. Working on trying to find that balance
5 minutes in a Like coming your way - what a well read and well spoken guy - Good episode.
Andy is such a great communicator
Fab work Sir…..
In the early days of the Tour, the riders would be given all sorts of pain relief and stimulant, much of it illegal these days!
The early Coca-Cola ad with the picture of a cyclist grows a backstory...
simpson was a simple doper
Whereas you’re just a simpleton
