For the record the cooking method you'll get a cleaner more efficient and consistent burn. If you noticed the newspaper method left a lot of ash and would have an inconsistent burn rate. There are ways to make it better but melting it into a consistent mass is the most effective method. With that being said the water method works great for fuses.

If you wanted to make colored smoke you would need to replace the potassium nitrate with potassium chlorate and the sucrose with lactose because it will burn colder and wont break the solvent dyes that you need to create the color.

"Cooking makes me nervous." About a year ago, I was mixing this up to make a sugar rocket engine, and I was cooking it, and a leaf landed on my stove (portable, propane fueled), and it caught fire and ignited the entire batch (500g, which is 5 times as much as you should do normally), and I picked up the pan to pull the leaf out, when I brought my face close to see into it, and it exploded 6 inches from my face. Luckily, I got out with minor burns, a couple marks on my skin, and I was fully blind for almost 15 seconds, and had trouble seeing for the next day or two. That was dumb.

Something similar happened to me when i was recreating an early 1900's black powder recipe. I was drying the mixture on a dying woodstove before pulverising it a second time, in winter when the relative humidity is around 12%. I measured the temp at 250 degrees and that was about 150 degree below the ignition temp so i thought i was well within the saftey limits. However, i was baking it on aluminium foil and a grain of sulphur that wasnt small enough and must have melted and reacted with the aluminium and set off the whole batch.
I got some minor burns on my hand because i was stirring it at the time, but holy crap...thats why you do this sort of thing in SMALL batches.

Chemistry graduate here. There's basically 3 ways to mix these two (three) things:
    - Melt them together
    - Dissolve/precipitate them together
    - Dry powder mixture
Melting gives a more consistent and efficient burn, without too much effort. This is why it's the go-to method for DIY model rockets.
Dissolve/precipitation can technically give you the best mixture, but you also have to be careful how you boil of the solvent (like you can't just heat it until it boils off) which is often too much effort compared to the other two. The trick of this method is that it removes the solvent by pulling it into the paper, and the large surface area lets them evaporate. However the paper also makes it burn very ashy.
Dry powder relies on having a very fine mixture. However the advantage here is that you can dope the mixture with other compounds (sulphur, aluminium, charcoal, etc) without much hassle. This is the oldest and most well understood method, but you really wanna be careful to not inhale any of it too

The caramelized version can give you a longer burn time. I made one caramel version in a tin can and it continuously bellowed smoke for almost 5 minutes. Completely made my whole street look like a war zone. We were all shocked by how long it kept going. I do like the speed of the paper style or the paraffin wax uncooked version is also a fine. Most recently (as in yesterday) I tested out a mineral oil instead of the wax, because I heard it was a good one. It was ok but it burned seriously hot with flame jeting up approximately two feet. I mean jeting up with no stutter. So it seems a bit too dangerous to consider it for fun but if the island is ever invaded I will be going that route.
First time I have seen you guys. I'll definitely check out more of your stuff.

I have actually Just mixed the dry Potassium Nitrate and Sugar and left it as a powder, the burn is less controlled and less consistent that way but it is generally the same reaction, the big reason you don't want to do that is because the powder is getting exposed to heat with a greater surface area (creating the more uncontrolled burn) and is less efficient at making smoke and flames that way but is a pretty great flash powder for a fire.

After it has dried you can put some powdered kno3 and sugar in between. wrap it in cardboard and put it in beans can or some kind of metal that won't warp (Soda cans will not work) and bang! you have a throwable amazing smoke grenade!!!

I figured out how to do this at work. I mixed sugar packets with water and K-Nitrate, and soaked little pieces of napkin in it. Dried it, burned it, and it worked! Coworkers thought it was pretty cool, we burned them in the parking lot for 4th of July. Though I ended up getting the nickname "Unibomber" afterwards.

The main reason you'd like to cook the original recipe is just to mold it into your "typical smoke bomb shape", not really for general smoke effectiveness.
    For instance:
Put (non hardened, still warm) recipe into a small PVC pipe, then push a pen into the middle of it and leave it. This will leave a space (once dried and hardened) to where you can put a wick in there, and fill the remaining space with a cotton ball or something just to keep the fuse snug against the recipe.
This might also make it easier to get colored smoke bombs, or at least more consistent ones. That's just my assumption, though. I know some people use some powdered dye from Hobby Lobby, or places like it.
Hope that helps, great video as always guys.

    • @chemistryofquestionablequa6252
      @chemistryofquestionablequa6252 ปีที่แล้ว

You have to use potassium chlorate as the oxidizer because it burns cool enough to not destroy the dye.

The best smoke mix I've ever used (And I've tried pretty much all of the easy DIY ones (KNO3/sugar, newspaper and AN, newspaper and KNO3/sugar, several variations on black powder, on and on) is KNO3/sugar/paraffin wax. Makes a really thick white smoke that isn't nearly as irritating to the lungs as most of the others. It also burns slower and with minimal to no flame when enclosed in a cardboard tube, which makes it even safer. Tech Ingredients has a great in-depth video on it, as well as a second on colored smoke. Highly recommended.

The sugar/nitrate smoke works way better if you introduce a hydrocarbon. A HUGE benefit is you don't need to melt the sugar over heat, so it's so, so much safer.
Measure out by weight 6 parts potassium nitrate (finely ground, but just before you mix, as it's hydroscopic), 4 parts sugar (finely ground, separate from the nitrate), and 4 parts paraffin.
Melt the paraffin over low heat - don't get it too hot; you don't want the sugar to caramelize when you add it. Mix the powders together well and then pour in as a suspension (it will NOT dissolve, so continue stirring until it thickens, but is still pourable). Pour into your container, no different from the last episode, and you'll get 10x the smoke of the classic without the hydrocarbon.
Sidenote - unlike this video, don't use powdered sugar. It contains between 2-5% of anti-caking agents, such as starches or tricalcium phosphate. Use sucrose (table sugar) and grind it in a coffee grinder or (if you have to) mortar and pestle. This is extra important in a wax-based solution, as you want fine particles for large surface area since everything is in a suspension.
You can also use Potassium Chlorate and Lactose as a base to introduce solvent dyes to make colored smoke bombs. You do need to tightly control the heat though, so adding Magnesium Carbonate and Sodium Bicarbonate (just like this video) is critical to getting the right mix that doesn't burn the colorant off and actually sublimes it. The ratios are completely different, though, but there are many online.
