When we see Rassilon in The End of Time and Hell Bent, he's in charge of Gallifrey. It's pretty cool to see him as a soldier here because it implies that he fought on the front lines before he became President. Perhaps he and the Doctor even fought side by side, which would be an interesting contrast to their distain for each other in The End of Time and Hell Bent. It's unfortunate that we'll never see John Hurt and Timothy Dalton onscreen together.

I like to think that, in Rassilon's timeline, that took place AFTER the Time War. It's inconsistent with his terror of death in The End of Time but this is a time travel show. If Classic Rassilon was later in the timeline, after maturing and embracing the fact that death comes for everybody, it keeps the character consistent.

Man, I had to add my two pence here. This is such great work! If only the Beeb had the time (and the rights) to add these really nice little touches. Really nice idea to include those bits of him using earlier dialogue. I will say though, those earlier shots and the clearer view of his face at the start would have been perfect just by themselves.
They should get Pierce Brosnan to play Rassilon and then he sees the Tennant era incarnation in a flashback and says "That's twice I used to have that face."
Don't really get the inclusion of Rassilon at the end but other than that the integration here is some of the best I've ever seen. Getting footage from the exact film the face shot actually came from and making it work so well, not just visually but making the dialogue line up really well as well. It's masterfully done.
When I clicked play on that short, I was thrilled and amazed to see the full fledged version of Paul McGann's Doctor, that I had been following through the audio adventures and had come to love as 'My' Doctor, given such a well written, character appropriate and resonant tie back into cannon. What I just watched gave me the that same thrill. By taking an amazing earlier performance by John Hurt, and using it's weight to balance the tone... I'm trying to sound smart just because I want you to know just how many things I appreciate in this video. If I was 10 I'd say brilliant. But for myself I say OUTSTANDING! X
Adding Timothy Dalton at the end was a nice touch. I wish he'd been available for Hell Bent because he carried a sense of power and authority that Donald Sumpter lacked. To be fair to Sumpter, the first part of Hell Bent was about Rassilon losing his authority but it would have been way more satisfying if the Doctor had kicked Dalton's incarnation off Gallifrey.
This is really well edited. I've been wandering what the BBC and now you pulled from for the young John Hurt. I know that's him but he obviously didn't look like that when the 8th Doctor's regeneration was filmed.
I think that the John Hurt incarnation was totally not needed as the eighth Doctor was dark enough to be the one that fought in the Time War and destroyed Gallifrey along with the Daleks in order to save the Universe.

You can clearly see where the inserted footage is edited in but I still consider this scene to be canon. The storytelling makes up for the wonky visual execution. This is a fitting tribute to both John Hurt's career and his performance as the true 9th Doctor.
John Hurt IS the proper 9th Doctor. Christopher Ecclestone is 10, David Tennant is 11, Matt Smith is 12 and Peter Capaldi is 13. I think the fanbase and the show should stop calling Hurt the War Doctor and refer to him as the 9th.

this is some really impressive CGI and computer editing, you have done a fabulous job with the materials you had.
It's not CGI, it's him mixing John Hurt's previous work in Crime and Punishment (1979) with other footage.

the sound from Power of the Daleks when we were in the Doctor's POV was a VERY clever little addition.

It's from the 1979 TV adaptation of Crime and Punishment - a BBC production, so that might be why the BBC was able to use an image from it so readily.
