This should have ended after the first question
"Why don't Men have to wear one?"
She was dumbfounded and hadn't even considered logic

My issue with one of the reasons for women wearing the Burqa it's to prevent men from being aroused by their beauty. That's rather patronizing and denigrating towards men. As if we can't control our basic, sexual animal urges. Don't get me wrong, a woman has and should have the right to wear whatever she wants, but that doesn't mean we as a civilized Western society should have to agree with their their reasons for doing so. What I found further patronizing was when Myriam Francois-Cerrah attempted to make out that Umm Hamza in any way was being bullied or victimized by any line of questioning or disagreement in her choice to wear the Burqa. No one forced her to be on the show, and presumably, she must have agreed to be questioned by Nicky Campbell on the issue. Also, I think the rest of the audience was fairly calm and respectful. I fail to see how Myriam could accuse anyone of bullying her. It strikes me she just didn't like the questions or arguments directed at Umm Hamza and thought it easy to play the victim card on her behalf.

It may be patronising, but it's also true. Look at the percentage of sexual crimes and see which sex is topping high 90% of those cases

@@oliver6257 So what are you saying? That the majority of British men commit sex crimes? Just because the majority of sex crimes are committed by men doesn't men the majority of men are committing them. And do you really think that women wearing a Burqa would prevent sex crimes from happening?

@@robertmcelwaine7024 I don't know why you're saying the first part to me. As for the second it doesn't need to be a burka, but certainly dressing more modestly would lower sex crimes significantly, slow down on that alcohol culture too.

@@oliver6257 I'm saying the first part to you because it strikes me that's what you're saying. Most men are sexual predators. Don't you think most men can control themselves around an attractive woman? Again, It's patronizing. Dressing more modestly won't make any difference. If a man is going to want to rape a woman he'll do so irrespective of whether a woman dresses modestly or not.All you're doing is potentially pushing the she was asking for it myth,

The first lady to answer Nicky’s questions was visibly uncomfortable with the line of inquiries. The truth is, it’s a double standard. Women aren’t thought of as people that have sex for pleasure and can be aroused by men’s bodies.
I think his questions started to make her think of the cognitive dissonance.

    • @robertmcelwaine7024

What gets me is that she thinks that women would be safer as there would be fewer sexual assaults or harassment towards them if they covered up, and dressed more modestly. There are women in Western society who while they don't wear Burqas, dress modestly and have been attacked, sexually assaulted, or raped. Not to mention that in Saudi Arabia there is no law prohibiting rape within marriage. Furthermore, pregnancy can be used as evidence of sex having taken place, and women who report rape or sexual violence can be considered to have confessed to having had unlawful sex *(zina)* and be prosecuted and punished by corporal punishments. These include floggings and even stoning

Social interaction is fundamentally what human beings are about, and the face is at the heart of that interaction, without that, it's gone. So its being a 'personal choice' means little in this debate. You don't get to choose the course and nature of interactions for your fellow citizens.

What irks me is any criticism of wearing the Burqa, and I fully support a woman's choice to wear whatever she likes, is seemingly condemned as bullying, or someone being put on trial as Bidisha states. No one forced the woman who was wearing the Burqa to come on the program, and she clearly made the choice to be questioned about it by Nicky. It was pretty clear she couldn't fully defend her position on why she wears it. I'm not for any legislation that would ban women from wearing the Burqa, however, there is a clear double standard that she has that she feels she should wear one but doesn't think men have to.

Should Catholic priests be allowed to marry? Absolutely! Imagine how much clergy abuse would be reduced! Because how many rules are there governing people's personal lives as it is. Abuse is never ok no matter what the circumstances are but it's partially because of these rules that these issues happen.
