Coming back to this review after a while and having listened to Ought's entire discography for about as long, I'm reminded of a line from a written review that I can't quite remember the source for, but it kind of outlined why Tim Darcy never really goes into the whole "really unhinged mode", and the whole "I'm no longer afraid to die; 'cause that is all that I have left... YES" thing on Beautiful Blue Sky highlights it very well also. He takes what the review called a "liberating approach" to his nihilism. Now that I know the band's work as well as I do, I feel that describes it perfectly. I don't think the effect would be quite the same if he followed more in the footsteps of, say, an Elias Bender Ronnenfelt (Iceage).
Just found this band through the song Beautiful Blue Sky. While I do get the sense that they are poking at societal norms and pleasantries, I do think there is the admittance that that is "all that we have." That with the beautiful blue sky provides the courage to face death, then dance. Amazing song.
Damn, this album is SO GOOD! Thank you Anthony for reviewing it, and putting the vinyl on your shelf a while ago; saw it and wondered what album it was and I was brought to this video after reading through the comments. I've had it on repeat for days now!
"Beautiful Blue Sky" reminds me of Philip Glass's score for Koyaanisqatsi, especially "The Grid." The film and the song seem thematically connected, even if coincidentally
totally agree on that Women influence on this record, also Tim's vocals remind me of Mark E. Smith so obviously, that i wonder how nobody mentioned this. anyway, i love this record very much and play it on repeat
The opener is becoming my favorite track on this album. In parts, it even sound like a mid-90's Thurston Moore solo album (vocals). Quite a grower, this. Canada: PLEASE keep sending over more dark, post-punky bands!
Literally just got into this album, and the next day you post this review. What a coincidence. Really a great album. Fave song: Beautiful Blue Sky Also check out their pitchfork performance
I love Ought, I think they have incredible potential. You might be right about them needing just a smidge of something to truly be amazing. Not enough bands are writing vocal parts the way Tim does.
Hey Anthony, have you ever listened to Minimal Man, an industrial post-punk musician that was active in the 80s? Listening to some tracks off this album I'm hearing some similarities and think you might want to check out his stuff if you weren't already aware of it, not like to review or anything, since none of it is current, he died in the early or mid-80s if I remember right.
3 review requests, all released 9/18 (last Friday): * David Gilmour - Rattle that Lock * Metric - Pagans in Vegas * Robert Delong - In the Cards (best one)
Vojta K. Yeah I kinda feel it's almost the same or a little worse than their last release. A few tracks I enjoy and several that I don't. Still curious to what Anthony would say. He's got a way of breaking down music that I enjoy even if I don't agree with it.
Hey Anthony, review the new Dead Weather album pls. Also, when you listen to up and coming bands on Bandcamp or something like that, can you "listen past the production"? Or does the not so great sound quality/production put you off enough to not even give someone a chance?
Feel a bit weird asking like this but your "about" page does say, if you have a request, to comment on your most recent video. Any chance you could do a review on The Four Owls. The UK's only hip hop super group (Not me calling them this, I think it's a bit cheesy and I'm sure they would to, but the media like it) They've just released their second album and managed to get Primo to do some of the production, which is big for a UK group. I think they're boss, would be interested to hear what you think
Oughta get a review of the new Jr Jr album. "Gone" is probably this year's "Seasons" by Future Islands, and I may be bias towards them but I'm a big Jr Jr fan and their craft is for sure progressing on this album. Also still need a review of Dan Auerbach's Arcs project!
I'll check this Ought album out this weekend! I hope they stay prolific. This has been a big week for electronic releases so when you have the time can you review New Order, CHVCHES, and Disclosure?!?!?!?!
Hi Anthony Faptano could you plz review Casey Veggies Live and Grow, Big Grams self titled ep with Big Boi and the Phantogram, Milo So the Flies Don't Come and Fetty wap self titled. Thanks!
i don't know if you know about this band/ if it is even really your thing but i'm curious to see your opinions on the bands hail the villain / six side die. they are both hard rock bands from entertaining front-man Bryan crouch.
+ShellacSoup It's great. Way more Swedish death metal than their older stuff, totally dropped the thrash & hardcore influences. Vocals are more varied too.
When you mentioned Women I thought, yes, it's because they have a member from Women in their band - but it's Viet Cong that has, and two at that. There's a member of Viet Cong that looks similar to one in Ought, though...

Are you going to review the Big Grams EP? Or the new Chvrches?
It bends my mind that none of these fans respond to the review or can discuss the music critically.
Feel a bit weird asking like this but your "about" page does say, if you have a request, to comment on your most recent video. Any chance you could do a review on The Four Owls.
