How to get a Job in IT with no Experience (2020 - Information Technology):
STEP 1: Develop a technical knowledge base. Studying the exam objectives from CompTIA's A+ will help you with this. I would recommend getting a cheap, refurbished computer from Amazon that you can practice on during this step.
STEP 2: Get an entry-level certification. This is much easier than it sounds. Certifications serve as an HR filter and are very helpful in obtaining your first job. I would recommend getting the CompTIA A+ certification. Alternatively, you can get Network+, Security+, or ITIL.
STEP 3: Experience - Make your own. Pick a topic in IT that you find interesting and do a bit of a deep-dive into learning it. After you have built your lab, or played with the technology enough, create some kind of simply blog post or TH-cam video teaching others about it. You can use your publication and lab work on your resume as Experience!
STEP 4: Resume - High quality and succinct. Generally, you want your resume to be as easy to read and as succinct as possible. A lot can be said about this, but take a look at the sample resume linked below.
STEP 5: Application Process. Fill out your LinkedIn profile COMPLETELY, and fill out profiles on all of the popular job hunting sites (Indeed, Glassdoor, Monster, etc). After this, start searching for jobs with keywords such as (CompTIA A+, Helpdesk, support, technician, etc). Apply to as many jobs as you can. If you live in a remote or rural area, strongly consider relocating just to get that first bit of experience. It may be worth it in the end. I have personally relocated to Japan and Hawaii in my career. It's not that bad, and can be a great experience.
STEP 6: Interview Preparation. Gather as many practice interview questions as you can, not necessarily to "learn" the answers, but to practice articulating your responses. See the link below for some sample interview questions. This will greatly help you, come time to do the actual interview. Because you've practiced saying what you want to say and how to say it, it's one less thing to think about during your interview and you will end up being much more relaxed.
Summary: The more of these steps you implement, and the better you implement them, the greater the chance you have getting at hired somewhere and getting the job you want!

I have always been into tech my whole life and wanted to get into the field in some way. Even in my b.s. IT degree they don't give a good path for what I should be doing to get a job. I've worked with computers my whole life and built my own. I probably know most of the A+ curriculum just offhand. Yet I still work a shitty dead end min-wage job. Really been thinking about getting into IT lately because working at fast food and grocery stores for years has really just ignited a rage in me like no other. The customers are rude as hell and disrespectful. At least as an IT help desk I'd be getting full time hours and some benefits. I know my worth and this isn't it.
I would start applying and make sure you have you resume written with ChatGPT , which is what I did. List all experience u have for IT even if it’s helping friends and family as the dedicated IT guy for them. List out your customer service experience as well , maybe list that your studying for you comptia A+ . I transition from Walmart to a really good entry level job with in the year bro so it’s very do able.

I have a bachelor's in MIS and I'm still looking for work. I just started a job today and my goal is to save up and take a comptia a+ exam. From what I hear it is supposed to give me an overall understanding of IT and serves a good way to decide whether I want to study for cybersecurity. So I'm gonna save money for this. I finished school in 2020, during covid, so I'm pumped about getting the ball rolling again. Wish me luck! 💯🙏🏼

Haha thanks for the compliment. It's all natural, I just tried to get halfway decent equipment for my audio (it's in the description). I also use noise gate and audio compression filters to keep the sound evened out, but my voice is just me talking normally 😂. Thanks again

I’m so glad I’m coming across this video. I had a Tier I help desk job interview yesterday and totally bombed it on the technical questions even though I have a great amount of experience from being in the Navy just shy of 9yrs but as a computer operator not an actual IT. Needless to say I didn’t get the job, but I was just about to ask my job recruiter what I could do to build my basic IT experience when I saw this video on my TH-cam Home Screen and it’s basically answered my questions. Thank you for this video 🙏🏽.

Definitely agree with the whole small town thing I live in a country town with a population of 27,000 So even smaller than Walla Walla lol and yes I can attest that it is very hard to find jobs here for every occupation I’m definitely game for moving anywhere especially Seattle I’ve always wanted to go there

Dang 5 certs, you are good to go. Make sure to check all your other bases (interview practice, physical presentation, job search radius, etc). Good luck! Getting that initial experience is very very important, so even if the salary is slightly lower, so keep that in mind! Good luck :)

Amazing video. I am trying to finish up my a+ currently. I just need the 1002 exam. I graduated with a BA in computer science back in 2003. I changed career paths and went to cooking school and worked in the hotel industry the past 17 years until the pandemic hit. This motivated me to get back into IT because my restaurant in the hotel closed. I was just wondering what information I can get how to make a blog for my resume. What resources are on the internet.

Hey! You can use a free site like medium to publish your blog too. I'm kinda weak in this area, but there are probably some really good TH-cam resources to help with SEO and other sites as well. Best of luck trying to get back in. You have that nice CS degree too 😎

Thank you! Very informative video. However, what you say at around 16:00 about a small town (btw 34k people is not small at all where I’m from lol) makes me feel hopeless…the biggest town within a 2-hour radius is 10k people. Most of these small towns are 4K or less.😅

Iv been searching your videos. I would love some comments on remote or a video on remote working. For example: Someone like me who is very family oriented and recently forced to change careers. Is it likely to be able to land remote work being new to this industry? Do you always have to go into work or are there companies that only work remotely? I know one thing for sure, it's much more likely now than it was 4 years ago. As long as your Resume/Portfolio is looking good and you apply consistently, your chance aren't bad.
_How may hours do you normally work a day? Is it super stressful?_
My job is a really strange job. It's a mixture of Cloud and Software Engineering. I honestly do about 4 hours of "labor" per day on this job and the stress is like a 2/10, maybe even 1/10. You will run into this a lot with Software Engineering at large companies that aren't Amazon, lol.. My Tech jobs were pretty similar, as long as you aren't doing consulting.

For full transparency, I had all my certs before I got married lol. Also, I don't know how to balance anything in my life. I tend to go really HARD in one area. When I do this, all of the other areas really suffer. I've always been like this but have been trying to fix it.

Hey Josh, I love your videos and appreciate you taking time to share this valuable info. I'm looking to transition into IT and decided to complete the Google IT Support Professional certification. I enjoyed using Linux over Windows in every lab scenario, with that in mind, what do you suggest I focus on to become knowledgeable enough to land a job? Are there entry level individuals that only use Linux in IT? Or do I still need to learn to use Windows/Powershell? I'm trying to narrow down an area of expertise just like your wife did with networking.
I would say you need to be proficient using both Windows and Linux. The Google IT Support Professional Certificate and the CompTIA A+ cover both Windows and Linux in-depth because you will encounter BOTH in an IT support environment.

Hi, Such an informative video. I am an electronic engineer, now as I have moved to Canada. I am interested in IT, trying to search where should I start.
I believed in one of your videos you mentioned being in contact with recruits to get contracts. If you've made a video on this can someone direct me to it, and if not. I would love it if you elaborated on the process of finding a good recruiter... or I guess getting found by a good recruiter. I'm not too familiar with this process and have only gotten jobs directly from the company.

I failed the a+ exams twice. The second time my score was lower than the first on both parts. The exams are bs how they are worded and set up. I waited 6 months in between tries, and i studied the entire time. That was after a year of studying before i took my first try. Im extremely discouraged and i cant afford to take the exams again. I basically had to take out a loan to take them.
Dang, that sucks and I'm really sorry. I find that grinding practice questions helps quite a bit. Then target studying areas that are difficult. Be sure to get some really good practice questions though, like Professor Messers, CBT Nuggets, and any official ones you can find. Careful of random free questions on the internet.

Hey Milena, I really appreciate you commenting! The path in this video and the CourseCareers path is almost the same, but the CourseCareers path is a little bit more refined. You don't necessarily have to take the course, but just the idea of the "12 stats" and the things you should do when trying to get a job in IT will really help a lot. As someone who’s trying to get a job as a data analyst- should I only keep the highly relevant data analyst certs on my resume? (I have 4 that are relevant)
Or should I also include my google project management & google marketing / E-commerce cert?

Thank you so much lol, but it's an illusion. This was actually the first actual video I made with my proper setup. Each segment took me many many many times re-recording it. If you notice, there are always a lot of jump-cuts and editing in my videos. It's because it takes forever for me to say something "correctly". I'm glad it looks alright in the end. I'm definitely not a natural, but the more videos I make, I feel I'm improving little by little. Thanks again, and btw thank you for watching :)
Am about to start a course course at a college soon. I want to start with comptia a+ however, there's a bundle course where you can do comptia n+ and cisco routing and switching all at once. My question is do you think it's advisable to study them all at once or is it too much?
