The max x was my first baitcasting reel and i haven't touched my spinning reels since. My 12 year old son loved the max x so much i got him one so i could get mine back.
I have two first generation black max reels with the black spool tension knobs. I used it to target musky so after many years the drag discs are shot but it’s a perfect reel for the work vehicle. I don’t need a working drag, I just use my thumb.
It was my second baitcaster, first was a lews smash combo. I got one of the black max combos with the 6 6 abu rod and after my first day fishing with it I instantly went back and bought another for 60 bucks. I got two Black Max rod/reel combo's for the same price as my one Lews Smash combo. The Smash is now my permanent frog rod......I rarely use a frog.
I just found your videos, loving all the BFS content. I have 2 Black Max reels that are probably 10 years old now and I still fish them regularly

My first bait caster was a Ambassadeur 5000. And I still have it. And got a second one a few years later. The old kind, with the spool tension knob on the left side.
Great comparison between old and new. I primarily fish round reels from Abu, Daiwa, & Shimano just because that's what I grew up on. Many years ago I bought a Black Max combo because I needed a beater rod/stick to let friends use and not be too concerned about. To this day I still own it and fish it hard in fresh and salt water. Looking into a Max Pro to maybe do a BFS conversion. Thanks for posting!
You should do full review on this reel. After using it for quite sometime and see how it actually compares to the Black Max

My first was a Revo X combo. I'd still be using it if the side plate hadn't fell off and into the lake while casting. Which reminds me... I need to order a replacement.
My first baitcaster was an Okuma Helios. I do have a Black Max for pond fishing.
Blackmax was my first casting reel and I still use it to this day !! But I have modified it ,custom made parts and different handles etc but it’s still a nice reel !!!!

Have a very early gen (maybe 1st gen) Silvermax I grabbed from Gander Mtn as a combo. Rod is gone, but that good ole reel still goes strong! Not smooth and not nice but held firm.
Love my 39$ black max and Berkeley cherry combo. Going to get the new max.
Yeps. First one. Even tho I have a lot of others now such as the Revo beast. A spro ox. Spro fsi bc. Abu ambassador. Still my blackmax gets regular use and very much enjoy throwing with it!

As a newbie, just bought the BMax3L last night. This morning made 20 consecutive casts (est.20mtrs every cast) without backlash. A personal record 😀. I have to say Abu Garcia BMax is really value for money. Will definitely enjoy BCing with it for days to come. Perhaps my nxt BC reel will be the Revo series 😋😘

I was hoping to see actual casting comparisons. I just bought my first black max last night and wonder if I should return it for an X?
I skipped the Black Max and went with a Silver Max. I then bought a Black Max afterwards. I still have both reels. That was over a decade ago. I have since bought high end reels, but still come back to the Black and Silver Max reels.
I don’t understand why abu doesn’t make faster gear ratios in their cheaper reels? I think that’s what pushes people like me, on a budget, to brands like Kastking and piscifun.
The black max was my second reel. Recently lost it. Dont know how, but I'm trying to find to find this reel and can't find it anywhere. This is a very reliable, and reasonably priced reel.

I got the max x and it’s good but I won’t throw anything lighter than 1/4 oz. Without big lashes. It’s still my best bass reel

I have a 13 fishing Origin and an Abu Garcia Black Max. I know im a poor. But the Origin is about $60 bucks give or take 5 dollars in my area. While the Black Max was $46 at my local Walmart. The Black Max is far above my Origin. The Origin honestly doesn’t feel as smooth and on one trip I had to stop using it because it was so gritty feeling, it almost felt like it was skipping gears. I did a cleaning on it but it has never felt like new again. My Black Max has never had anything like that happen. I have to say the Black Max isnt just a good budget reel its a good reel.

If you look at the image at 16:20, its a black max. It also has the black lines on the spool as well as the same red pull bar for the side plate. The knobs are also different. Is your black max a gen 3? I have the gen 2, and im just wondering if they made a gen 4 as well

Do you know if the gear System of the abu garcia promax3 is the same as max pro? , because I need to order some spare parts but I just cand find them for the promax3 not specificly for the max pro
Ohhhh! After watching this I just realized I did not buy the max x ! I just saw black max with big orange handles, grabbed it!
Thought I was getting a deal at Walmart $45 bucks, but it’s still the old max with a new handle! Oh well…. I also just received the Kastking Legend GT, and the Pisifun phantom, both with higher specs, although the black max still feels like a professional working tool. The legend and phantom aren’t bad, very pretty. The overall consensus in my garage of everyone who picks up these 3 reels is that the black max feels more like a quality reel, dam near close to the Revo!

Actuallly it was my second reel, my first reel was the Silver Max. I own Shimano Metanium DC, Scorpion DC REVO ROCKET AND A plethora of very expensive reels, the one I have in my car right now? My maybe 10 year old Black Max. He goes wherever I go. Keep it lub and it will last forever

This reel would be a good comparison not only to the 3rd Gen black max but also to the JDM Shimano Bass Rise.
I have the Bass Rise and if it out performs the Max X then we know whose the top dog in the budget lower end name brand. The Max X looks a lot like the Revo X forsure.

Black Max spool is cut different. Can see visually max x is more of a straight cut.

A fair beginner I guess, I’m just spoiled with my shimano collection. Then again I’ve never owned an abu reel.
I'm guessing you got shimanos for the smoothness (as well as other things, of course). Abus cant compare in any way to a shimano's smoothness
@@clariidfisherman3702 I honestly started with lews, quite a few of the higher end from them. I bought a curado dc for my kids they lost interest I inherited them, that started the whole thing with shimano. I’m pretty impressed with them and a bit embarrassed on how much I’ve spent over the years on that brand. But it works for me
@@ssmart5701 They don't sell Lews stuff over here in Malaysia so I've never gotten to try them out. But the tradeoff is that we have a Southeast Asian Domestic Market, so we get some cool stuff people rarely talk about like the Daiwa 18 Ardito 100 HSL LTD and Daiwa Garuda reels that have colour shifting paint (the first reel I own, it's amazing with hybrid ceramics), and we get JDM stuff just in the stores. But yeah my first reel ever was a Shimano Sahara spinning reel. My latest purchase was the Curado MGL. That Sahara is still in service after 7-8 years.
@@clariidfisherman3702 that’s awesome, for any JDM or real nice is almost unheard of here, especially in the NE USA. If I want a JDM original it sometimes difficult or gets damaged in shipping.

There is only one reel I like from Abu Garcia is the one you have It’s the all different colors 64 elite Limited I rather have the Curado bfs XG than the Abu Garcia reels

Learned how to use a baitcaster with a black max, it's my dad's reel now. With the right adjustments throwing 1/8th ounce lures on it was no problem. Now I have the blue max combo from Walmart, and might have to look into getting a Max X at some point.
And the dam worm gear hits your finger when palming the Revos frame 🤦🏾♂️
Has anyone used this reel to catch Salmon?
Never had a black max im newer to a baitcaster but the max x is really smooth and i never had to many backlashes exept i had a few bc im new to this but ill give a 5 🌟 for the price of it its pretty good
By the way, about max x, that's a way cheaper breaking system from Banax, so that's not an improvement. Banax was my first baitcaster and it was awful. Thumbs down for sure.
Definitely if you have not a lot of spare money, or just getting started get a Shimano Caius.
