  • In this video, I'm going to show you how to do calligraphy with a medium nib fountain pen. I use the Lamy AI Star for the illustration.
    I will show you:
    - How to hold the pen
    - Some basic strokes for calligraphy practice
    - How to write the capital letters and lowercase letters
    - Write with examples.
    I hope this video helps you in learning cursive writing :).
    Pen: Lamy AL Star
    Nib: F
    Ink: Lamy Black

    It's not about the grip - it's about the pressure you apply as you write. Harder strokes produce thicker lines, while softer touches makes thinner lines. Speed can also help too. Writing on the side of your nib can damage the tines. Sure, for a Lamy, this isn't an issue - Lamy nibs are cheap and easily replaceable. Other nibs, however, can be much harder to replace if they are damaged. Just get a calligraphy pen which is designed for it rather than risk damaging your fountain pen.

    You can see the way they're scraping the paper along. That's a great way to break a nib. Literally any other video on youtube on the subject explains why it's a bad idea.

    I'm sorry, but my heart skipped a beat and I was in horror when you held and pressed the pen in 90 degrees. That will break the tines faaaar earlier than it's intended use age. Harder strokes produce thicker lines, not the angle you write. This is not a valid and a correct advice for using a fountain pen. I stress again, this is NOT a valid and a correct advice for using a fountain pen. As much as a Lamy steel nib is super sturdy and strong, other fountain pens will fail and the nibs will crumble. I can't imagine someone who has little to no knowledge use a flexible 18ct gold nib in a 90 degree fashion, I will cry inside.

    For anyone who sees this, I’m not sure that’s the best way to write with your fountain pen. Your standard grip seems a bit heavy, which can be fixed. However, rotating the nib and consistently writing like that may over time damage it. This includes ending up with misaligned tines you uneven pressure and springing the nib if you press too hard at some point.
    Please consider looking into a flexible nib or stub made for calligraphy, otherwise brush pens and dip pens with flex nibs might be worth a look.
    As a newbie I’ve made far worse mistakes though, have a permanently mauled cheap pen that I flexed when it shouldn’t have, it now writes but not as well as it likely should.

    • @elgabenedicta
      @elgabenedicta 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. The main purpose of using a fountain pen (regular nib), well at least for me, is to not to have to press so much like when writing with ballpoint pens etc. I just let the weight of the pen give the pressure, then I just need to glide the nib on top of the paper to form the writing.

    Nice tip, but that kind of pressure can easily wreck your nibs tines over time. It's not designed to recieve pressure on that angle. If you want to do this, make sure you do it with an unexpensive fountain pen, or extra nib.

  • @calanm7880
    @calanm7880 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    That is extraordinary! I’ve never seen anyone else show this - I’m aware “reverse” writing aka using nib turned backwards (180 degrees) can be a thing to get really delicate fine line on many pens. But this is fascinating- will need to try it out and experiment! Not even sure why it works? Did you discover this or pick it up from a reference/ fellow penman?

    • @PowerfullPC
      @PowerfullPC 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      This is poor practice. The way they are writing pushes the tine touching the paper out of alignment with the other tine, creating a larger surface area for ink to be applied. But this is strain on the nib in a way it was never designed to handle. Reverse writing and normal writing are because the slit makes contact with the paper and allows capillary action to have ink flow. Writing sideways shouldn't work, but if you put pressure you can push the bottom tine out of the way.
      Again, not recommended, it can damage a nib over time.
      Edit: except for the very unusual Sailor Trident fountain pen, you will (as far as I'm aware) never find a nib designed to write this way. Flexible nibs are designed to bend with pressure on down strokes, so can give line variation, but are very niche. A Lamy Safari does *not* have a flex nib. Unless a nib is designed for flex, trying to flex it can spring the nib, causing issues with flow (and even breaking the nib in worst cases)

    Such beautiful writing, I practiced writing cursive a few weeks now, but my writing looks terrible. Can you do a video where you show more basic strokes that people can practice to improve their hand writing, and apply these strokes to the letters ( lower & upper case) Like what strokes did you used to practice to get to where you are now? Thank you.

    • @TheNormalHandwriting
      @TheNormalHandwriting  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Dalena :)
      The strokes that I practice most frequently are actually the up and down strokes for line variations. I prefer practicing by writing paragraphs. And would rewrite the words/letters I think are not good yet. I would write that particular word/letter for pages till I feel it looks good.
      Different people have different techniques and that's just my personal preference. I hope it helps :)

      @@TheNormalHandwriting so how should a pen work without stopping while we are writing

    • @TheNormalHandwriting

      I guess if the pen is filled with enough ink it should work. And periodical pen cleaning (like, every few months) would be useful so that the pen can write smoothly. Hope this answers your question.

    • @SaltyD3plorable
      @SaltyD3plorable 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's because you should NEVER attempt to write with a fountain pen in this position. It can and will eventually damage your tines and your pen will be F'd. A simple flex nib will do the job nicely, while holding the pen in the proper position. This video makes me terrified for all those pens about to be abused out there!!

  • @Each-Uisge
    @Each-Uisge 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Interesting technique, but holding the nib at a 45° angle like one does during gothic calligraphy or italic calligraphy should have the same effect :)

      Kakuno is a pretty good beginner fountain pen and is relatively cheap while still being really smooth. It uses a cartridge and you can buy cartridge refills, but you can also just buy ink and refill the cartridge with a syringe.

    I don't think this is the correct tool for this kind of job. Bending the tines like this will produce misalignment and you'll end up with a scratchy nib in normal position. I recommend you use a proper flex nib pen like noodlers or Pilot Falcon.

    • @muhdzafri7551

      another one.
      yes
      your mind speak logic
      Writting like this is the equivalent of mistreating the nib, because the tines we're not designed or constructed to resist receiving pressure from that direction. then again her pen seems to be just fine 🤷🏻‍♂️
      I would not do this with my Parker 75

    Calligraphy means decorative and the fountain pen is decorative but not very much because it's about the writing not about the drawing. The fountain pen is decorative but it depends on your handwriting.
