    Fun fact: the band employed the use of synths heavily in this new album for two reasons that I’ve gathered. First, they lost a bassist since Apex, so the synths help to fill the sound gap. Second, the narrative behind the album deals a lot with space and redemption, so the synths also help drive that theme.
    It took them a few albums, but they’ve really found their sound!!

    Great reaction as always! Just to explain the story of this one to you, on the last album, Apex, the Matriarch tasked the Immortal with retrieving her four sons so she could sacrifice them in a ritual to attain immortality, which she succeeded at doing before the Immortal went back to sleep in his mountain. What the album doesn't make clear, but came directly from Brittney, is that before she killed her sons she did another ritual to bind their souls to her, so even after death they are forced to serve her as some sort of revenants. This song is about the Immortal encountering the four souldbound sons. The growls are sung from the sons' POV, and the cleans from the Immortal's.
    You still have a month or so to react to the rest of the Apex album!

    • @pete-m86
      @pete-m86 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I hadn't realized the extent of story telling in the songs. Now I REALLY want to go back and re-experience them. The description feels like something out of Greek Mythology!

    • @praetorxyn
      @praetorxyn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Pete M There's a TH-cam Playlist somewhere of Brittney going track by track through Apex and explaining what's happening. The new album even has a Limited Edition story book for it. The indie merch store was sold out of them, but I was able to pre-order one from the Napalm store.
      It's all in the lyrics for the most part though. One of the first lines in Abyss is "my mountain is gone, I'm surrounded by steel." We know from Brittney it's been about 50 years since Apex, and he wakes up on a spaceship. My hope when I listened to Apex, which has been born out, was that the Immortal would be awoken by the Matriarch's grandson (the child of her only good son, the one from Earth and Ashes). She's said the grandson's characters was inspired by Jeff Bridges' character in Tron Legacy.
      The cover art depicts the Immortal facing the Matriarch and her four soul bound sons. So we can infer that the grandson tasked him with taking down the Matriarch, which was my hope when I finished Apex.

    • @pete-m86
      @pete-m86 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@praetorxyn Thanks for the info. You're right about "it's all in the lyrics". I'm re-listening to Apex but this time brought it up on AZlyrics.com so I can catch everything. I'd be interested in hearing Brittney's explanation, but definitely want to first hear the story as told through the music. Trying to avoid a bit of "ruining a joke by explaining it" lol.

    • @praetorxyn
      @praetorxyn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Pete M One thing to bear in mind. For every song except The Matriarch, which is sung from an omniscient POV, and Cleanse the Bloodlines which is sung from the Matriarch's POV, and the clean male vocals in Earth and Ashes which are sung from the only good son's POV, the cleans on that album are sung from the Immortal's POV, and I think the growls are from the Matriarch's POV.
      That should help you out.

    • @pete-m86
      @pete-m86 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@praetorxyn Yes, I noticed the change in POV (much easier when reading the lyrics!). Although somewhat of a stretch, in Cleanse the Bloodlines, the matriarch reminded me of the character Jha'dur from Babylon 5.

    Just a note about the use of growls. Its a lot more prevalent on the first couple of albums (Behold the Devastation & Demons of the Astrowaste) and arguably overused- they feel a bit like Bal-Sagoth. I think the kinds of songs they write work much better with growls as being an accent to the song rather than almost every other line.

    That opening scream is (to my ear) three layers of Brittney and the guy roaring in the background, pretty epic alright!! 'Melodically intelligent,' I like that....never have been a fan of brutal rifting just for the sake of rifting! Joe Satriani and Buckethead are two good examples of guys that can really rip on a guitar, but always have a well-thought-out melody line! Heard you once say that you listen to some Prog, so you must know Dream Theater. Would love to see your thoughts on either of their songs, Barstool Warrior or Viper King, or maybe a song or two from Porcupine Tree, like Anesthetize (Live, Tilburg) or Arriving Somewhere But Not Here (also Live). Really enjoying your break-down of really well-played music! Cheers!

    IMMORTAL IS MORE THAN A NAME!
    SOULBOUND
    We race around the melted char of what was once a neutron star
    And use the gravity to whip us into dark galactic rifts
    Yet still somehow we can't escape, they have no flaw, they feel no pain
    These twisted shadows of the men I once condemned
    [Pre-Chorus]
    (We can) Why do you seek us?
    (See right) You won't defeat us
    (Through you) Turn around while you can
    (Your soul) Try to remember
    (Is ours) Why you defend her
    (This time) Shatter the master plan
    [Chorus]
    Soul bound, endlessly forever
    Locked between the darkness and the light
    Don't drown, in the swarming, blackened rising
    Hold on to humanity and fight
    [Verse 2]
    Tormented by the tethering of souls to phantoms that remain
    These spectres seem devoid of life but there is something in their eyes
    Refuse to see they can't be saved, I push to pull them from the grave
    End their addiction to the thrall once and for all
    [Bridge]
    But who am I to be their saviour, slave to time
    When I am doomed to be in chains for all my life
    [Instrumental Break]
    [Chorus]
    Soul bound, endlessly forever
    Locked between the darkness and the light
    Don't drown, in the swarming, blackened rising
    Hold on to humanity and fight

    Great video, but i would like you to give chance (finally) to some of my suggestion, you wont be disappointed.
    1 Nightwish instrumental songs: "Moonlight" and "Last of the wilds", second i live from Wacken 13
    2. Nightwish song She is my sin with Tarja, even though Floor nailed this song, it will be (at least for me) always one of the best Tarjas songs. Rather studio version.
    3. Actually any other NW song honestly, all are great
    4. "Finsterforst" - "Mach Dich Frei" amazing song, maybe not your cup of tea, but it is really interesting
    5. "Cradle of Filt" songs: "Foetus of a new day kicking" "Lilith Immaculate" and "Hearthbreak and seance" studio versions
    6. "Amon Amarath" - "The Berserker at Stamford Bridge" and "On sea of blood" - less known song, pretty powerful ones
    7. "Blind Guardian" - "Bards songs and Vallhala" live
    8. Anything from "AVATAR" , personally sugest "Paint me red"
    And also, chcek lyrics for all of this songs, rly important to understand whats are these songs about.

    I really enjoyed the solo discussion and the solos themselves. One of my favorite solos because of the blend of melody/technicality is from Metallica's The Unforgiven. Catching that live with a lightning storm raging around the stadium is a memory I will never forget. Another great set of solos is Galneryus - Angel of Salvation. The solos in it show off the two different styles you pointed out at a really high level. Love to see a reaction to that. Really happy with the new Unleash the Archers stuff. Pre-ordered the CD today. Awesome song and reaction.

    One of the things I noticed (and fell in love with) about their music a few years back is that there aren't any extraneous parts. Everything fits and flows together. They don't write sections that feel like filler between other sections. Like you said, the songs feel like they have forward momentum and are going somewhere.

    I'm not the biggest fan of power metal in general as it's often times way too cheesy for my taste but I can appreciate the musicianship of Unleash the Archers and that they are incorporating modern riffing (I thought the riff at the very end was kinda In Flames-esque - if they were still any good that is...) and spectacular drumming that isn't just double bass for 4 minutes straight. Definitely a much needed fresh breeze in this subgenre.

    To give a little background on the addition of the synth: The story of this album takes place in space, so Brittney mentioned (I forget if it was in an interview or a facebook post) that they were adding synth to add that slight element of sci-fi to the sound. I would definitely expect it in more than just the two singles on this album, but it may not be a new element to their sound after. Only time will tell. So far I'd say it works for the two songs we've heard though.

    Great reaction and breakdown. Got a question for you. Towards the end of the song, could they have repeated the chorus one more time before the screaming? I was kind of waiting for them to do that. Doesn't change the fact that I really love this song. .

    • @ChaseCarneson
      @ChaseCarneson  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They could have, but it doesn't feel like it's missing anything. I think wanting a double up is a credit to how incredible the melody is and how listenable it is even on a first listen.

Even after hearing it broke down so well by someone whose expertise who I respect a great deal, who obviously enjoys the band and their, I still find myself wanting to stop the video go listen to something else. That is a sure sign that its not a band for me. Music has to speak to you for a person to really enjoy it and appreciate it. Their music simply doesn't reach me.
