  • When my friend offered me her goats, I knew that I not only had to build a sturdy pen to keep them in, but I needed to reinforce everything to protect them from the local predators. Come take a look at what I have done.

    Wow! That looks like it was a lot of work. Good job. Goats are so much fun! What beautiful country and skies! It reminds me a lot of Arizona dessert where I grew up. We had mountain lions and coyotes too. I didn't know they were so determined to get at livestock though... God bless!

      Thank you, it was worth it! I do love our mountains and skies here, but yes, most of the people in my area that *had* goats have lost them to predators. That is why I built it this way. Blessings!

    we are in northern ca in the foothills and a mountlion put his paw around the hog wire and just pulled it right off the gate. It was welded on and he bent it up at the bottom corner. The cat was the size of a great dane. I am re-thinking my goat area and after seeing what that mountain lion did to my neighbor's chicken pen, which was heavily fortified, you might want to double check your area.

      Hi sweet lady, yes it is a little scary, but mostly for the animals. The mountain lions generally stay in the hills, but we have seen their tracks before. There are some areas close by with a lot of juniper trees, and they like to hide in those. They generally come out at dusk, or during the night, so that is the biggest concern. Gotta keep my goats safe!

    Looks like you have it fixed good. I haven't done mine yet. But a strain of Barb wire at t top of fence helps anything from climbing over. We are known for coyote last yr we had two black bear hang out for awhile in winter. They seemed to keep coyote away. I was more concerned with coyote than the bear. I pray the best for you. They seem content . 😊💚blessings to you

    • @VickiesCountryHome
      @VickiesCountryHome  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hope so! I do intend to put some kind of covering over the top and around the food storage area. That will give them a little more protection. Night time is our biggest concern, and coyotes and mountain lions the most likely to cause trouble. Fortunately we have never seen bears come this far from the Sierras! Thank you and God bless!

      I know, LOL! These are mini LaMancha goats, and from what I have read, they are the only breed of goats that have these little “Shrek” ears. I have run chicken wire, half attached to the fence, and half staked to the ground. Then we are going to get crushed rock to cover the chicken wire. We have done this on our chicken coop, and although coyotes have tried to dig, they very soon give up.

      Thank you! She isn’t expecting, she apparently has looked like that since she had her babies in February. But I do want to get one bred next month. The big cats have always been here, but you never see them. We have seen their prints, usually in the winter in the snow. They mostly stay in the mountain areas, and hunt down weaker deer, antelope and wild horses, but they will take advantage of penned animals. That’s why I built the smaller pen. Love ya!

    Hi Vickie...looking at your goat pen, is the chance of a predator digging underneath the wire pen a possibility? Also, at the top, at least from what I saw above the goat houses, it looks like the square openings are a bit large....is that not a concern? Just wondering, although I am not an expert. Hoping your goat adventures are a success! Looking forward to more updates on them. Thank you!

    • @VickiesCountryHome
      @VickiesCountryHome  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Coyotes are well known in this area to dig under, or climb over a fence. We have used the chicken wire and crushed rock for our chickens for quite a while. They will try to dig, but give up. They can go over the top, as well as mountain lions. The mountain lions could get a leg through, but not their whole body. The coyotes are not likely to be able to climb it, and get all the way through the openings. Hopefully soon I will be able to completely cover the top openings with either metal or wood. For now, I have covered them more than others that I have talked to in the area. Hopefully the predators would look for the easier prey.

      @@VickiesCountryHome Don't get your shelters too large, too hard for them to keep warm. If they are smaller the girls and babies will all snuggle together and keep warm. They will still want to go out in all but the worst weather even in the winter.

    Hi new mom Vickie! Oh my, I am in Appalachia and my chickens are IN JAIL as I call it. The chicken house is an old sturdy shed 1/2 is for the chickens and 1/2 is for 'stuff'. They have a huge fenced in - and in the ground and roof on the yard too is fenced in and reinforced. Then these bird dogs (it used to be foxes) came and literally ATE the hardy board off of the side of the chicken coop and got under and ate 4 of my hens. So, now, the whole thing is surrounded by a 3 wire electric fence. Like I said, IN JAIL. I so want to let them out, and may soon, the dogs having been shot by my friends in the butt continued to come for a while, but haven't for more than a month.
    Now, my friend has goats here and babies. The man who helps me on Saturdays always checks the property for me and he saw a coyote coming up from the side away from the house and headed for the goats. He killed it. We are allowed to kill anything that is harming out livestock.
    I also highly recommend guardian dogs for your goats. The biggest issue is to get a couple of them because the coyotes are now ganging up - a new behavior in the last few decades. This means they can kill bigger animals too, like horses. It is a battle with nature to keep ones animals and birds safe and healthy.
    I pray that your pen (and it looks like it will) protects your new family members. Are you going to breed them and milk them? They sure look happy now with their new home.

    • @VickiesCountryHome
      @VickiesCountryHome  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There have been problems with wild dogs in the past too, but mostly coyotes. OUr chickens are in jail too. We built a new coop and run a few years ago, and it is completely enclosed. We have huge hawks, owls, and eagles that will pick off chickens. We don’t have many trees or bushes here, so they get picked off by the birds and coyotes. There is a wolf “rescue” not far away, and we are pretty sure that the coyotes have bred with them, because the coyotes here are LARGE! They look more like German Shepherd’s, and yes, they hunt as packs. I would love to get a couple of livestock guardian dogs, but after talking to people here, I need to have a larger fenced area to get them accustomed to their territory. It just wasn’t going to happen this year. So for now, it depends on what shelter I provide.

    • @marthaadams8326
      @marthaadams8326 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VickiesCountryHome Yes, we have hawks too that could pick me up! I have bears, snakes, etc etc. Yes, dogs do need some room, but they sure will protect your wildlife. I have a German Shepherd service dog and in some ways, I have to protect her from the farm invaders. She had chased the dogs when there were two, but when 3 showed up, I kept her in and called the neighbor to shoot them. He got 2! I thought that would get the owner to stop it, but NO, they still came back, but were shot at again and the owner must have finally gotten the message. He 'saves' labs (bird dogs) - not as bad but like your wolf saviors. When I lived in Kalispell, MT, they were letting wolfs loose to repopulate and yes, all of a sudden they had to sit in the car at the bus stop and wait until their child was on the bus. And, in most situations, it is against the law to kill them. Go figure, animals are worth more than people and children. Same with alligators in FL being protected and now they are HUGE! Common sense seems to be dead some times. So, keep protecting your babies. :-)
