It's going to make it harder on you..... because now you have to replace all the time it took to hank on the sails with new and more content in the videos...😂😂😅
A sail is no small gift. The amount of planning, the number of components, the cutting, the layup assembly, the sewing and the hand finishing, that all go into putting a sail together is immense. I came to appreciate this when I had to replace the Leech tape on my headsail recently. Great kudos to Precision Sails for that kindness to, of all sailors, Beau and Brandy who really deserve a break. Doing it tough is definitely their Brand, but all that hard repair work done and the miracle interior decorating work done to make an old boat a home, is a level above which calls for things to become a little easier.
No one is more deserved of such an upgrade as you two. The smiles beaming in this video are brilliant and great to see. Your upgrades are adding up to a more pleasurable life. I’m happy for you.
Thank you for taking us hank on sailers through this furler install. Being single handed I've had several mishaps leaving the helm to handle the hanked sail, even colliding with a rock jetty! So not only a matter of convenience but safety too It's a "Why didn't we do this before" moment and your happiness in this video has radiated to us as well! Fair winds to you both! Capt. Ron
Finally…. I think I said 18 months - 2 years ago to try and get a roller furler no more Beau induced anxiety seeing him up on the bow in rolling conditions. Smiles on your faces says it all. Now get some electric winches and your sorted 😂😂. Enjoy the new setup and looking forward to the next vlog as always. Greg 🇬🇧
The number one trick / tip is to always hold a little tension on the furling line when you are pulling out the sail. If you just let it go slack when the sail comes out, the wraps on the drum will be very loose. Then when you go to pull in the sail when it is breezy, the line will slip down through the loose wraps of line on the drum and then it will tighten the wraps on top of the line you are pulling. I am sure that you have suffered some very bad overwraps on a winch and know how hard it can be to get them to release. This is the same thing but can be many times more difficult to release because the overwrap might be a dozen turns deep in the drum. Added to this is that this always happens at the very worst possible time with you get caught with too much sail and REALLY NEED to roll up the sail so your first instinct when it does not want to come it is to pull harder [maybe with a winch] which just ties the knot tighter. I have seen it so bad on one boat that the furling line needed to be cut off in pieces. The boater blamed it on a bad furler when it was really a bad technique. The number two tip is that the first fairlead needs to be exactly 90º to the center of the drum. Any more or less than 90º will cause the line to feed more to the top or bottom of the drum. @16:41 you can see that your first fairlead is too high which is causing the line to bunch up on the top of the drum. That causes it to then roll off and over-ride the previous turns on the drum which will then cause difficulty in pulling the sail back in. If you do it correctly, the line on the drum should look just like the line on the spool at the store. With a little tension and a correct lead angle to the drum, the line will play back and forth over the drum in a smooth wrap with no bumps or gaps to allow the pulled line to pernitrate.
The balancing of you boat with roller furling is immediate. So many options. We just did this a few seasons ago, and still marvel at the ability to just roll it in.
headsail advice from the old timer we bought our boat from. "unless very light wind keep one wrap on headsail to protect the rope" the guided part of the head sail is most common failure and by protecting it with at least a 3/4 turn can prolong its life exponentially.
Congratulations on your Furler and New Sails! Very Much Deserved. Beau, you don't know how to be Lazy and I'm sure you will find other things to do! Capturing the sunset with the perfect music and a capture of the Dolphin jumping at 24:54 is Amazing, Beautiful, and priceless! Loved it all. Stay safe you two!
it's great you have friends like Nathan and companies like Precision to help you out ... can see the happiness on your faces now that everything was installed 😃😃😃😃😃
Make sure you regularly rinse out the furler with water. Salt crystals can cause them to go heavy. Also when too low or high backstay power the furler may go difficult. You’ll find a balance soon .
Be sure and regularly inspect the sail for thread wear and chafe. Just because it rolls up and goes away often means you don't find what's wrong until it explodes. Also, if you leave the boat for awhile, take the sail off so it can't come unrolled in bad weather. Also the cover decays every minute it's up there so as the saail ages the cover get to be less effective. Sailmaker for fifty years saying this. I also gave up hanked on but had three sails that could be used in different wind regimes.
Thanks for the insight, we definitely plan to store them if we are in one location for a period of time as well. we want these babies to last for a long time!
New listener watcher here. You're the first sailing channel that makes me FEEL as though I'm on your boat sharing the sailing experience with you two. I'm not 100% sure what it is you're doing right, but your everyday conversations about life onboard the boat just seem to be logical and common sense to me. All the questions that occur to me as we sail along usually get answered within the next dolphin pod meeting. I got (all in) with the changing the engine of your boat to electric. LOL I had to go online and find out ALL ABOUT electric motors to power a sailboat. Interesting stuff ! Up until then, all I knew about electric motors was my furnace had one and so did my wash machine and dryer. WHO KNEW? PHIL, Pottsboro Texas
Keep on rolling, baby. The big smiles on your faces says it all, and it put a smile on my face to see you two so so happy. Smooth sailing till the next episode. With the new sail setup and the windlass Beau will be one lazy sailor.
That puts a huge smile on my face.. what an amazing sail, yall really deserve it and it will keep yall from folding, unfolding, and folding some more... throw 1 more fold in there and yall could start up your own laundry. Great job yall!!!!
I’m sure you have heard this before, but it can’t hurt to repeat this, but a rigger once told me that using a winch to furl a headsail should be a last resort because it’s too easy to break something using a winch. He said if the furler is set up properly, you should be able to curl it by hand no problem.
Just remember sails are cut to pressure lines so if you reef the sail move the deck car forard so the pressure on the sail doesn't change from the angle of the sheet . Better shape , Better performance , Better life span , Doesn't go baggy .
Hank on you changed sail to reef, with a 150 you will need to be aware to reef earlier. Your sail is also a bit baggy and needs tightening on the forestay a bit. Pull on the halyard to tighten it.
SV Wicked Wanda here... so glad to see you with the new furling and sail. Makes life so much easier. I love mine and the electric winch that rolls it up is the next thing to get!!!! The dolphin jumping at the end was a great shot.
Congratulations, so much easier to get going and put away. Obvious, but having the small genoa is only useful if you change early enough that you can get the big one down under control. Temptation is to partially furl and keep going. Then, when the wind continues to build, you have your hands full. Ask me how I know!
Sounds about right. it will be nice on those passages that has heavier wind for days. Like when we left the bahamas. Honestly i dont think the change outs are going to happen as much as beau thinks. lol. (i already have proof) hahahha.
Great to see the improvement! You guys will really enjoy this. Now you need a wind vane self steering system. Reduce so much of that wheel time on the long passages.
Congrats on your new upgrade. Just fyi for when you need to furl in heavy winds…fall off to a broad reach or you may run out of furling line and some of the sail will remain out. Fair winds and hope to see you guys out there after hurricane season.
😀😀👍👍❤❤ This will be much safer and quicker. This means more sailing "time" in bad weather. Thanks for sharing your video. Bye for now from Seattle, WA.
So good to see the upgrade Brilliant and well done !! Watching you furl it in I thought the next thing you will be thinking about is electric winches :-) :-) You have the power :-)
Wow so just starting watching the journey. Amazing. Watched the past year and decided to go to season 1. Wow you guys have come a long way. Can't wait to see what's coming up. Watching from Bristol,IN. About 2 hrs east of Chicago. Originally from lakeland, FL. You guys are great
Also for a frame of reference. Saw the shout out and shirts from lippert. That is where I'm at. A lot of friends work for them and spoke with them about it. Small world
Nice. So happy for you guys to have it a little easier. I was just bragging on you guys on youtube sailing channels on Facebook how you guys are one of very few original youtube channels that have remained true to your roots. Enjoy your new, easier sailing 😊
from an old time fuller guy: 1. Keep tension on fuller line while letting sail out (the wind will grab it and turn the line into a ball in the drum.. lots of pain full work too clean it up . think fishing reel line ball). 2. keep some tension on sheets when furring in so you can keep it neat. 3. either cleat off the fuller line when at rest, big wind will open her up if not locked. 4. make a big soft shackle to lock the sail (again strong wind can unwrap the sail and eat it.). And lastly the sail should be tight vertically, tension line to bring luff tight, if you have more room at top expand your lower shackle to get as high as you can.
My only advice is to have a fair lead on the mast for the halyard. The halyard can wrap around the forestay when you furl and cause the forestay to snap. I know this from experience my Dyneema halyard was the only thing holding everything up when my forestay broke
Being able to stay off the foredeck at night and in rough weather is a huge safety item . Worse case in an unexpected blow you furl it in and flog the main if you must . Hank on is fine for costal day sailing and racing.
You’re gonna be so happy you got that Roller especially with an electric motor because that roller can be controlled and you can sail into a lot of places just rolling it in or out
You will love the simplicity of roller furling. One thing that always surprises me when I see furler installed is connecting the hoist rope to the very top of the foil. That puts the maximum bending stress on the foil which can break them It also prevents the eye at the top from being hoisted high enough for the drum to clear the bow pulpit without putting an even greater bend into the foil. I hoist mine with a prusik knot that is placed about 6' down from the top. I attach a light moussing line to the inner wrap of the prusik which is then secured to the drum to release the prusik and haul it down the foil. That greatly reduces the bending of the foil and allows me to raise the whole system to any height I need.
Hi Guys, congratulations. It is nice to See how happy you are with this aprovement. It Looks like, the luff is a bit loose. Maybe you can haul the sail a bit more or take away the band at the bottom. It will furl better. Maybe you can Check this with precision Sails. I wish you fair winds and Perfect Moments with this new sail.
Hi guys, there’s a channel called wind hippie sailing, they did their self furling Gib on the water? It was crazy but they did it. Good to see youse guys got a doc. Do it on about the good work cliff from Australia
I know how you feel, I’m getting my furler reconditioned and mast rewired, painted and new lights. There is nothing like great upgrades to make life and sailing easier!
What a fabulous episode, thank you so much. I have sailed all my life and never had a roller furler so I do know exactly what you mean and share your excitement. Those last few minutes of the dolphin in the pink sunset were absolutely fabulous, I’m looking forward to your next adventure!
The boat I'm on now has a furling jib. It is way to convenient lol. Instead of changing sail it's so easy to just pull out a small bit of sail almost like reefing it's so awesome you 2 finally made the switch I promise you all will love that thing. Much love from Sailing Abroad.
@@BeauAndBrandy as I've mentioned before you guys were one of the channels I watched that inspired me to do this as well I am so hoping our paths cross not going to lie I might be a little starstruck when I meet you but I can't wait to see what kind of stories we will share with each other if our paths crossed.
So pleased for you. Furler and selftailing winches were the first things I installed on my new to me sail boat in 1984. Turned me from a weekend motorer to a weekend sailor!! I cruised that boat full time from 1987 until 2019 and would not have been able to do it without the furler!! Enjoy.
Congratulations on the new setup! Receiving our Precision Sails Headsail a couple of years ago was a very exciting day. With over two years of use now, we are very happy with the choice. Best wishes on the many new opportunities to enjoy the wonderful sails and roller furler ease of use!
WHO IS HAPPY WE GOT THIS COMPLETED!?! WE SURE ARE!!! I know there are a ton of you guys that always wanted us to have this setup!
Take your old sail and make duffle bags 🎒 for gifts to family & friends. Cheap Christmas 🎄 gifts.
Soo much safer!
Be good!

The other great thing about a furled jib, you can easily reef it. Just furl it until you have just enough power for your conditions.
It makes it soooo much easier for sure! And safer!

from an old time fuller guy: 1.
Woo hoo!!! The wait is over!!
haha. thank goodness. 6 years was long enough.
My only advice is to have a fair lead on the mast for the halyard. The halyard can wrap around the forestay when you furl and cause the forestay to snap. I know this from experience my Dyneema halyard was the only thing holding everything up when my forestay broke

HEEEEYY!! we have something to add below the waterline that will help speed her up :)
Being able to stay off the foredeck at night and in rough weather is a huge safety item . Worse case in an unexpected blow you furl it in and flog the main if you must .
Hank on is fine for costal day sailing and racing.
believe us, we know this all too well. Which makes this upgrade even MORE SWEET! FINALLY we can sail a little more safely.
You’re gonna be so happy you got that Roller especially with an electric motor because that roller can be controlled and you can sail into a lot of places just rolling it in or out

aww thank you, this sure is doing the trick!
