Marina Raskova, Often referred to as "The Soviet Unions Amelia Earhart" is perhaps the most underrated figure of influence in the formation of the The 221st Aviation Corps.
While she herself never flew in the 588th "Night Witches", she would instead take command of the 587th Bomber Aviation Regiment. Her actions in life, the inspiration she became and her drive and push in the pre and early war days of the Soviet Union was one of the key contributing factors to the formation of the all woman Aviation Regiment's and to the Night Witches themselves.
So today we start our exploration of the 588th with the life and deeds of the woman who made the 221st possible and who's actions inspired the young female pilots of the 588th who would stalk the Wehrmacht in the night..
    I hope you enjoy!

Thanks, man, for the series! I’m Russian and it’s great to know that non-Russian people are really interested and touched by one of the stories about our super-heroic (actually, there are no words in the world to fully reflect their heroism) Grandmothers. We owe them our freedom, our lives and should do everything to make them remembered in generations. Please continue your very important work in this context!

Second of all, I wonder how the whole crew survived. Surely those massive, brass balls had some strain on the aircraft frame during the emergency landing. Let alone the miracle that they didn't make Marina's chute fail that whole way down.

Keep in mind this was the 1930's, There was no radar, no guidance systems, Maps with visual and stellar navigation (like old sailing ships) was the only form of navigation and the flight headed into a part of Russia that even today is mostly wild with very low population in a prototype aircraft of which only four were ever built. Emergency landings at that period especially into such unknowns were very common.
