The PO 2 was a training aircraft that was used in flying clubs before the war. From here in Russia there were many trained pilots who know how to fly this plane well. There were quite a few women among them. When the second world war began, women volunteered for the front. They might have been nurses or radio operators, but they could fly well and they formed a separate night bombing regiment, No. 588. They flew on PO 2 , it had a very strong frame made of aviation plywood and was covered with a special fabric. The bullets went right through him, and he flew on. The aircraft had dual controls, which also contributed to its survivability. In fact, the plane "Night witches" was what is now called a drone. According to its characteristics, it was a manned drone that delivered bombs to the exact address in complete silence, and disappeared into the night sky. I knew about the Knight Witches but I never knew that their Commissar had searched for the place where each of her pilots were shot down and killed, that is true comradeship and the female pilots of the Night Witches more than earned their place with the bravest of the brave, may they never be forgotten.
She did that for several reasons. 1. missing pilot of downed plane was treated as MIA, probably - captured or even defected. Her girls refused to wear the parachutes, so the crash site was enough to confirm heroical KIA instead of MIA. Finding these sites she removed any, even very pale spots of suspicions from their names. 2. she was kinda "adopting mother" for them, and she respected the memories of her "step-daughters"
@@Sergei_Agarkoff The problem with bombing missions in ww1 era aircraft is that they would be flying so low that by the time you were able to climb out of the cockpit, pull the ripcord and allow the parachute to inflate and slow you down to a reasonable speed, you would already have hit the ground. Parachutes weren't really much help and just got in the way.
These girls hadn't just to put up with the fire of there enemies and the boorish taunts of there comrades, but the underestimation of there superiors, but then they just went ahead and proved their value to saving their country. For this they should always be remembered, thank you Yarnhub for doing so.
“Boorish taunts of their comrades and and underestimation of their superiors” exist only in your head. First of all “Night Witches” aka 558th night bombers special Reg were all female Reg (including technics and mechanics) throughout the whole war, secondly it was awarded titles “Guard” , Red Banner and order of Suvorov, which means acknowledgement that: 1.they belong to elite part of the forces 2.their contributions to defense of the country is immense 3. their tactic skills are outstanding!! Mr Yarnhub Sir, I am truly grateful to you for posting such quality videos that shed more light on the Soviet fight against the Nazis. I grew up to history books teaching us that the US, and to a lesser extent UK, won WW2. It was only much later while researching on the internet I learnt the real fight was on the Eastern Front where 8/10 Nazis were accounted for by the Soviets. Thank you again and keep up the good work.
More fun facts about the Po-2 they flew, the low wing loading of a bi-plane (bi-planes had been outdated for 5-8 years by that point) meant it could glide without engine power for much longer than monoplanes like Yaks or MiGs and the silent approach from above proved useful in part because of this. A secondary factor was something I've read but I can't find any concrete evidence for right now (so consider it as plausible), German AA guns had some target lead detection which was fairly early technology at the time and the Po-2 was too slow for it to track properly, contributing to the bombing success. Canvas planes were also in general remarkably resilient to small punctures so long as those did not hit the pilot or required control surface.
The too slow for AA also happened in the story of K.M.S Bismarck where she tried to shoot down the Bi-planes (swordfishes) and she didnt shoot down any because the planes were too slow for the Auto Aiming AA
@@TheAviationGuyID True. This also applies to the "Rosie the Rocketeer", an american grasshopper recon aircraft fitted with bazookas on its wings. The fact that it also had low speed meant that german AA fire could not stop it, allowing the plane to take out german panzers from above using its bazookas.
@@vinceking7878 The only thing they could fire manually was the light AAA. Even if the light AA hits it wouldnt do anything as the bullets would just pass through the swordfishes
@@TheAviationGuyID I know nobody cares but apparently the Bismarck was considered a He rather than a she by the Kreigsmarine. (They thought the ship was so mighty that it deserved a male pronoun)
Good. For me as the son and grandson of soldiers it would hurt when my grandfather would tell me.of his brothers in arms with no know grave, forever missing in action.
And part of why Yevdokia Rachkevich retraced the 588th's path from the war and searched for every crash-site, was so that her girls could have a proper burial and the recognition they deserved. You see, in the Soviet Union at that time, unless your corpse was found, if you were Missing In Action you were considered a Deserter, and if you were captured by the Germans and became a POW, you were considered a Nazi Collaborator unless/until proven Innocent. Before Lieutenant-Colonel Rachkevich found their crash-sites and resting-places, those girls weren't seen as the heroes that they truly were.
In April of 2019,as a birthday present to myself,I was one of the passengers of an operational Po-2 planes(12 of them are left,6 of them are operational). Yes,it is a slow, but calm plane, easily controllable. I did remember, that the first instruction to step inside the cockpit was, 'DO NOT STEP ON THE WING, it might break' :) The second was 'MIND YOUR HEAD'...I hit the center part of the top wings, the maintenance crew and the pilot gave me a little smile...the designer of the plane already thought about idiots like me,so he put a strengthening element into the top wings,at the center :D So neither me nor the plane was hurt too much.
What's cooler than telling a true story? Telling it in rock music! To think that they also need to be close on the front lines with their outdated planes, turn off their engines while doing their bombing runs, and fly at night is absolutely amazing. This is a part of forgotten history that should known. BTW, I like so much sabaton that I keep "the last stand" as my ring tone. Great video as always!
What I learned here that i didn't get form Sabaton is that these weren't even the best ones, there were the least skilled of all of the Night Witches. Now I want to know how successful the other groups were.
This is literally my dream coming true. After I've first read about them, I stumbled upon Sabaton song and was lying in bed half asleep listening to it. This is almost exactly a clip I dreamed of, except the explosions aren't sinced with drums Thank you.
I've found out about Sabaton thanks to Yarnhub's video about Charlie Brown and Franz Stigler. Year later, Yarnhub makes a collaboration without Sabaton about my favourite song. Seriously a fantastic channel
Gotta say, this is probably my favorite video of you guys' so far; the collab with Sabaton was perfect. Hearing the subtle and familiar riffs of the song while your narrating, and seeing Sabaton's signature S on the plane propellers really set the mood. On a more somber note, you guys did a good job on the animation all around; in particular, you nailed the animation and expressions of Yevdokia Rachkevich. She genuinely looks upset after crossing off the names, and her animation of her searching for the girls' bodies after the war really made you feel for her. Call me a sap if you want, but I think more of these stories need to be told; I'm using the Night Witches in a book I plan on writing, and I'm hoping I can do them justice.
Спасибо за это видео! Я плакал, когда смотрел его. Это слезы гордости, радости и скорби. Спасибо, что рассказываете не только о героях со стороны США, Великобритании или Канады, но и о героях Советского Союза
When I saw that 'S' on the propeller I knew it was Sabaton. I however didn't know we would get a properly done video out of this. Loved how respectful it was. o7
"At her signal, the pilot would cut the engines and swoop in slowly, silently. Dropping their bombs, dealing death from above. Unexpected. Undetected. Stealth perfected." 2:41 legitimately gives me goose bumps, connecting that to the songs' lyrics is just so cool.
I'm an amateur military historian focused on the Korean War. This video raised the hairs on the back of my neck. Wow...mix of Yarnhub and Sabaton sounds like a perfect October 'Witches' brew. VERY well done~~~
That Sabaton collab was wild. I love this channel; it's incredibly entertaining and the quality of the animation is very high and the stories behind the videos are also incredibly interesting. Thanks for another great vid!
I'm a World war two buff especially aviation, never heard of these pilots thankyou so much for their story. They should make a movie about these amazing pilots. Wonder how many of those air cobra pilots would have liked attacking a target hundreds of miles an hour slower than what they flew at!" I think not many."
WW1 planes in WW2 have the best stories about them, no exceptions. The night witches, attacking the Bismarck and even the tale of Bazooka Charlie, it makes you wonder if even in the current war they have a place.
Please note that women's clothes were not a part of ostracizm by army command, it was simply unavailable until, I believe, 1944. Also later this reg went *all* women, even technicians were female. Also, in 1943 it became 46th guard night bombing Taman of Red Banner and Lenin orders regiment. Red Banner order and Lenin order are awards they received for their service, while Taman is just an honorary title I believe
Nice heart-touching final point with sixths member - lady-member - of "Sabaton" putting her sunglasses on, like she put her protective airman glasses before... I'm almost 50, but could not hold my tears. One remark: in bombing scenes the engines are running, while IRL these Metal Ladies re-started the engines after they passed the bombardment site. The bombardments were committed with the engines turned off.
As they did 5-10 sorties a night, it means their airfield was very near the front. Which means, airfield must be darkedned, to stop up prowling german night bombers and fighters.... And thus; they had to start and land perhaps even 10 times more or less in pitch black... A great feat for both pilots and navigators... In Poland they could make even more sorties a night.... Probably because Luftwaffe was much weaker, and thus, they had the luxury of some light in the airfield... Much easier to find the airfield, and much easier to land and start.
I actually bursted in tears at the ending of the video. Proud and sad at the same time for all those brave women that never came back home. Excelent video.

@@Ling__Ling__ Indeed, it is one of my favourite sabaton songs (along with caroleans prayer) that is why I am hoping for a crossover about the zulu war maybe even the heroics at the battle of Rorke's drift with the song in the same style as night witches, you can also head to the sabaton history channel i have some replies to comments on the episode about Rorke's drift where some extra information is added, as I am a history teacher in SA you can probably already asume but that is in the syllabus so I do know quite a lot about that war

Yes, the actual Russian planes had a Soviet Star.
Have a nice day!
@@maxspirin3945 Thank you for your concern of how my day was but maybe listen to the video and hear some of the things stated in it that I just said above, but well maybe you were there and know better?
@@TheAviationGuyID couldn’t they fire it manually?
@@vinceking7878 The only thing they could fire manually was the light AAA. Even if the light AA hits it wouldnt do anything as the bullets would just pass through the swordfishes
@@TheAviationGuyID I know nobody cares but apparently the Bismarck was considered a He rather than a she by the Kreigsmarine. (They thought the ship was so mighty that it deserved a male pronoun)
They were also the only one regiment in Red Army which had no MIAs: every loss were confirmed after war

This song was the first Sabaton song I heard, and to this day is my #1 favorite sabaton song. Yarnhub & Sabaton, you did a fantastic job!
Did you you know Po-2 can fly backwards, a 40km/h wing from the front is enough to give it lift while blowing it backwards.
Holy mother of the Red Baron he partnered with sabaton!!!!

You know Yarnhub is awesome when they animate a full music video of Sabaton.
And that comes from someone that doesn't even listen to Sabaton.
Epic.
The whole video was incredible. The CGI, direction, music, and story was unbelievable and out-of-this-world. Thank you so much for uploading this!
Goddammit that ending brought me to tears. I didn't know the commissar did that after the war. My god how heartbreaking
I like that he even added Josef Kociok and his bf 110.

The subtle F-you at 2:30 is great
I've found out about Sabaton thanks to Yarnhub's video about Charlie Brown and Franz Stigler.
I managed to get to see a Po-2 at The Shuttleworth Collection in Bedfordshire. I even nicknamed them "The Witch's Broomsticks".

Made me cry, this is a damn good dedication man. Props to your team
The Sabaton S on the prop center was all I needed to see to know it was a cross over.
Oh my god its happening its happening everyone stay calm
I LEARN more important history from Yarnhub than all the so-called "history" courses in college. 👍
