This is our 50th episode! And as we're closing in on one year of Sabaton History, we are covering a much-requested song about Female Pilots in the Soviet Army during World War Two. Also, you may have noticed that this episode didn't come out on Thursday. We had some technical difficulties and still wanted to give our Patreons two days preview access before it went live. Check out www.patreon.com/sabatonhistory if you're also interested in getting exclusive access to the newest episode! Cheers, the Sabaton History team!
Since this one the 50th episode it reminded me that 2019 was the 50th anniversary of apollo 11. And it's only a matter of weeks until commerical crew launches and Artemis 1 this June it would be epic to see a song about space flight.
there needs to be a song about the woman on the homefront, they fought a valiant battle as well. also, when do we get something about Canada, Captain Mad Jack Churchill, and the Black American soldiers who were subjected to jim crow laws and treated like Undermensh in their own army?
Those planes were extensively used for recon, training, med-evac, light bombing, liason and probably other roles, flown almost entirely by men both day and night. It was one of the most produce planes in the Soviet Union ever. The 588th is just really famous because of the amount of propaganda produced featuring them, much like the Soviet sniper Zaitsev.
There were one women night bomber regiment and a lot of men ones. The 588 is mostly famous becouse it was women's. The war isn't women's deal. But they fought.
Most Sabaton comment sections: Jokes about boys at school being tougher when being compared to girls. This video: *AVIATION! DEVIATION! UNDETECTED STEALTH PERFECTED!*
As a matter of fact, the Soviets fielded female personnel in nearly every specialty except the regular infantry. There was a female fighter ace named Lydia Litvyak (she was KIA flying a Yak-1 over Ukraine in August 1943), a large group of lethal female snipers, some of whom such as Lyudmila "Lady Death" Pavlichenko became international celebrities, even female tank drivers such as Mariya Oktyabrskaya (mortally wounded while repairing her T-34 in Ukraine in 1944). 90 women in all earned the title Hero of the Soviet Union in World War II, most of them combatants or resistance fighters. Premier Mikhail Gorbachev added Lydia Litvyak to that list in 1990 (she had been withheld purportedly because her death was unconfirmed).
Fun fact about Pavlichenko: when she was in the USA for a propaganda tour she was extremely offended by the american press. The reason? Their interviews with her were more about how warfare impacted her femininity (Red army rules on make-up, and the cut of her uniform), than about the war-stories Pavlichenko came to tell, to garner support for USA entering the war on the Soviet side. th-cam.com/video/Bqi396loWt4/w-d-xo.html
"Lady Death" isn't a good example of that, her story is completely faked. There were other female snipers that had true stories and were fighting against the germans for real. And we should remember about them first and foremost.
@@galis4383 Completely is too strong of a word. Sure ( as with any propaganda icon of that time, not just in SU ), her real acomplisments were blown out of proportions for , but there have to be some to begin with.
Crap and propaganda. People dont get shot by commissars they did not had permission to do so (Propaganda), there are memories of the shot down pilots who were returning back to base with a lot of adventures but not being shot JUST BECAUSE of VODKA. Women were equal then and every one was admiring them rather than mocking (Again propaganda).

You know, for all of the contemporary issues that center around female representation in cinema; the story of the Night Witches is that of the Battle of Castle Itter in the "WHY HASN'T THIS BEEN MADE ALREADY!?" category. The Night Witches is a story perfectly suited for a mini-series or a movie. Get out there, find yourself some unknowns, spend the money on a great writing team, and it will sell itself.
Let's be honest, most of the representation issues in cinema are either pushed by the elites (who have zero knowledge on how life really is for regular folks) or by jealous/man-hating bloggers and keyboard activists. And, sadly, with the current climate in Western cinema, I doubt they can make a satisfying script for the Night Witches. Especially since this history is about women being truly strong when facing adversity, and not about pushing any sort of ideology. For a good series on this to happen, we'd need to find writers, producers, directors and investors who really cared about history. And not just views or money.
BF5 was a great place to create a story mission about Night Witches, they have planes and Air combat, so, such missions will be a good plain training for players too, but... they prefer to create a Cyborg....
@@blackearl7891 No... It will not, if they will not do such especially... Saying some good things about people is not praising the nation in overall, also Soviet Union had as many bad as many good things too, yes, it's demonized a lot today, but the problem mostly was in people who ruled USSR and in system, which was created by this people, but it does not change the fact, that some Soviet girls fight against Nazi and became heroes not just of the Soviet Union, but of the world too, so, seeing them as just USSR heroes, as any soldier who fight against Nazi, is wrong, Nazi and Fascism was a global problem, which touch almost any nation all over the planet and still is actual, not as much, as in first decades of 20th century, but still there are groups of people who see Nazism or Fascism as an adequate Political ideology... They do not do this, cos they do not want to create a Story about people, they are creating Political propaganda more, than movies or games today (not all,of course, but I'm about companies like EA, and s.c. Modern, "Intersectional Feminism" is a Political Ideology, which is not a Feminism at all, tbh... But even a Feminism was a political ideology...), so they are creating product, which dictates you how you must think, and not the story about Heroes of the WWII, so they just do not give a fk about Night Witches... Also, after hearing this story of Night Witches and this song, did you or someone else really change their mind about USSR and what was USSR in overall, as about the nation, cooperation of the nations ? And socialistic and even Communistic ideology is still alive and there are a lot of people who believe in Marx's neo-liberalism and different type of utopias. Maybe, they afraid to undemonize it, but it will not change any bad things, which Soviet Union did to people, as no demonization will change the fact, were Soviet Union really helped and did a good things, creating Icons of Evil is always wrong, but this is most popular modern Political strategy against opponents, make them look Evil... Sorry for my bad English.
@@Xelluse oh boy. Neoliberalism doesn't come from marx. Let's start that out immediately. It arises from thatcherism, and reaganism in the 80s, with aspect of alan Greenspan. Second the term neoliberalism as many spew it out comes from the center left moving towards a more free market approach. So you're getting confused in the political, and economical aspect of it. Second, the biggest issue with the night witches at least in Hollywood. It's because we still have aspect of cold war mentality deep in our psyche. At least in America, anything in regards to the Soviets is toxic whether it's warranted or not. In it's core the Soviet witches basis itself on the love of russia, but also the aspect of communism as they felt they were owed that equality supposedly that communism preached. So already their entire aspect is rooted in politics, and politics viewed quite hostile by a certain group of Americans. Personally, I kinda want a movie about the night witches or at least a tv series. Also most studio focus on the American side because they get massive grant from the military for making them look good which is great for the studio bottom line.
Hey history team. Dropping night witches on us now after the technical issues, you are totaly be forgiven. Was looking forward for this song for a long time
This was well worth the wait. This is probably my favorite Sabaton song, and it's SO amazing to see live, and it's one of the coolest stories from the Soviet Union! Every second of this episode had my attention and I was sad when it ended!

When I first heard Night Witches it was live at Gas Monkey in Dallas, Texas. All my hair instantly stood on end and the hair on my head is 3 feet long! I had the chorus memorized by the second refrain, I loved the song that much!
The song is so amazing, the starting lines sound like incoming planes. The song is like falling bombs and the ending lines sound like them flying away. So energetic and amazing song, one of my favourites! And story behind them laying is incredible!
Yessss, finally, I think I've been waiting for this song the most! Although I got known the story of the Night Witches from this song back then, I quickly read a lot about them. I've been always interested in the topic of women in warfare, and god, how many great stories are out there! I wish Sabaton would do more songs about fighting women. Ok, I don't wanna be insatiable so I don't say you guys should do a whole album, but I would be extremely happy with a few more songs about badasses like Anna Yegorova, Maria Bochkareva or even Boudicca, the queen of celts, just to mention a non-20th century person too. And the song itself is incredibly energetic, it's constantly on my workout playlist.
Awesome! Thanks for the support! And we agree that women in warfare is a very interesting albeit overlooked topic. By the way, Sabaton has a special form on their website for song ideas: www.sabaton.net/do-you-have-a-good-idea-for-a-song/
@@tejesedeny Radical Left wing military organizations are a treasure trove for stories of women in warfare, as a result of their philosophical belief in equality (also between men and women). So those might be of interest as a topic of research. :) For example women served at front-line troops along men in the Anarchist CNT/FAL during the Spanish war, during the Algerian revolution in the 1950's, and women also fought in Mao Zedongs Militias, and he reported to said "Women hold up half the sky" in tribute to women of his party. To this day the Kurdish (decidedly left wing) independence movement in Syria is famous for its female fighters.
@@belisarius6949 USSR was only military wich ( at lest on paper that is :P ) welcomed both men and women equaly. Tho from history perspective, women were present in warfare well since deep antiqity. Sure, *enormous* majority of warriors through out history were men, that can not be denied ! But there was always few ( very few buy still ) women who fought. After all, archetype of amazon/warrior princess didn't came form nowhere ;) .....
I am appalled by myself with interest in World War II, that I never came across a reference to these wonderful women. It wasn't until I got into Sabaton, that I heard and thus began researching them. This song has done nothing but made me fall in love with band more. So glad to see this video be made.
I heard about them when I got into military history when I started building models of military vehicles. Planes by far are my favourite followed by tanks. Ships are fun to build but a bitch to mask and paint with the airbrush.
This song really set the tone of the Heroes album. The first time I heard it, I knew it was going to be an awesome album, which also became my first Sabaton Album and made me a fan for life!
A historian or commentator, I don't know who he is, made a big mistake in one place when he said that those who were captured were necessarily arrested. This is not true. Most of those who returned from captivity returned safely to their units. Only about five percent were arrested. Those who were suspected of working for the Nazis.
8:19 in reality, Soviet men's who were captured and then returned from captive, first passed a month in a test camp. 95% of people returned from this camps.
I love this story and song. I had never heard about these ladies until I heard the song. Thank you for making the song about these amazing, badass ladies.
The Night Witches have always been my favourite history fact, probably since I'm a pilot myself, even since before I even knew about this song. Even my history teacher didn't know about them (no hate on her, she was an awesome teacher but was less interested in military history). The discussion I had with my teacher after telling her about it was really fun and ever since then whenever she talked about aviation, she looked at me and let me correct her on stuff
Not many teachers have enough bravery to confess that they may know less than their student. So, you're lucky enough. History teachers in the schools I admitted to. mostly were very selfish persons: "you're just a pupil, and I AM THE TEACHER, so shut up and don't even dare to correct me: I AM ALWAYS RIGHT!" One exclusion was in junior grade, when we learned the history of the ancient Greece, and I definitely knew more about the history of Olympics then she, ar than was written in schoolbook. And I had about 15 minutes for my narration in front of the class, instead of her.
Wasnt there also another woman who demanded to drive a T-34 because her husband got killed in the war? Sucks that i've never heard most of these stories.
Fighting girlfriend was the name of the tank can’t remember the name of the tanker. She was such a badass that she jumped out of her tank in the middle of battle to fix her tank. It eventually got her killed but I’m pretty sure she was awarded hero of the Soviet Union.
@@Dog5ight You are right. Even the tank was destroyed. But Soviet named "Fighting girlfriend" next tank. And next. And other. Last took part in the Berlin conquer.
I was JUST about to make that comment. That woman was a total badass. Also there was one wounded that killed herself with a grenade when she was surrounded and managed to get a couple kills.
"For the Soviet leadership, the death of the pilot, was better than being captured! The prisoner was considered dishonest and the pilot had to fight and die! " The text of the credits on the screen. I don 't have words. Couldn 't help but get around the shit of the USSR! And then there 's "Those who were able to get out, they were questioned by commissioners and often sentenced to death." The man on the screen, the musician he 's there, or who... Do you really think these heroic pilots were forced?! And they were counting on the Geneva convention if they were captured?! Everyone had a grenade, for that case. And it 's common, for our fighters, to have a grenade for yourself, in case of injury, when you 're in the rear of the enemy or under threat of captivity. And in Syria, when our pilot blew himself up and the enemies surrounding him with a hand grenade, he was forced to do it, too? Bloody Bolsheviks, probably. Not otherwise. Started for health, finished for rest... Handsome.

Interesting to note about the crop duster. It's top speeds were actually slower than the stalling speed of German fighter aircraft. Leaving German fighters only the ability to make strafing runs on a hard to see target unable to reliably stay on the crop duster's tail without literally falling from the sky under their own weight.

To think the Po-2's 5-cylinder radial engine had only 130 horsepower. That's about the same power of a Toyota Corolla. And the witches did more than a lot of Soviet pilots who were flying Yaks, Pe-2 bombers and IL-2s. They were truly amazing.

This song is the one that made me discover+like Sabaton. And that concert we see in the video... was the very first day I heard and saw Sabaton (Hellfest 2017). What a night ! Glad to have seen you (twice) at Knot/Hellfest 2019. Keep up the pace !
The first time I saw/heard this song live...I was in awe and horrified at the same time. It was so cool. The opening music, the sound of impending death just took my breath away.
Just when I was wondering if I missed this episode, it pops up in my feed. Well worth the extra wait, as this is one of my all-time favorite Sabaton songs.
What historically accurate WWII women in combat? not disabled cyborg British front line female infantry soldiers? because that's a thing that really happened on the western front so say EA. :P
Night Witch regiment? nah. Doing a modern representation of Norwegian saboteurs, replacing an entire team of soldiers with a mom/daughter resistance doing the same job just with more explosions? That's history.
They should add USSR to the game... For the start... But they won't - new western policy says, that USA won the WWII, and there was no USSR. I guess BF 6 will be about brave US and British cyborg-women batallions defeating Nazi-German-Soviet alliance. Mark my words, it will be.
Fifty episodes already. Time flies. Every show I have been soon so far, you guys have always played it. It is one fucking great song. Those women were really tough and they were true soldiers. The background story from what came before is even better.

@scooty470 Joseph Stalin won the war, the USSR won the war, all those millions of victims for the sake of one thing-for the sake of victory over the fascist, he came to his native land, chose villages and cities, many mothers were left without children. And you can't compare Stalin with Hitler. I don't want you to have the opinion that all Russians are such patriots and pray for Stalin, no, it's just a deep sense of pride for those people, countrymen, HEROES. Good luck to you p. s. Translated through Google translator, sorry for mistakes.
@scooty470 bruh, you've not studied enough. The millions of deaths were a side effect of mass industrialisation. All of a sudden, farmers had to adapt to a new method of plantations that were industrialised and not horticultural,as they were used to. This resulted in famines. Stalin himself directly ordered the killings of about 100000,and that is nothing compared to that of Hitler.
@@chupasaurus Yea, I guess that fighter jet pilot was really embarrassed when he later had to report that he lost to a biplane and did so because he forgot to stay above his stall speed.. Oh, you guys. In the memoirs of the pilots, I read that the pilots themselves refused to take parachutes with them because they were useless, because the planes most often worked on a "low-level" flight (at low altitude) and there was simply no way to jump out. And Yes, the planes did burn well. Well, I also did not quite understand about the form, because in the Soviet army there was a female form of clothing. But maybe I don't know something. But thank you all the same for the video and for the song about these brave people! This prompted many to get acquainted with the history. For example me)

Joakim, you think your radio interview was bad for a long description? Bit of a personal story here, but I work at a book store, and for one of the books we sell, a main character just so happens to be one of the Night Witches. When selling said book to a customer, I may have gone a bit off the rails in a description of just who the Night Witches were, what they did, and that my favourite band had written a song about them... The customer then proceeded to ask "So what's the book about?" I had no answer...

This is our 50th episode! And as we're closing in on one year of Sabaton History, we are covering a much-requested song about Female Pilots in the Soviet Army during World War Two.
Desert - Fortune favours the brave
A song about Lydia Litvyak

Because it would end up praising the Soviet Union unintentionally.

@@tejesedeny Radical Left wing military organizations are a treasure trove for stories of women in warfare, as a result of their philosophical belief in equality (also between men and women). So those might be of interest as a topic of research. :)
For example women served at front-line troops along men in the Anarchist CNT/FAL during the Spanish war, during the Algerian revolution in the 1950's, and women also fought in Mao Zedongs Militias, and he reported to said "Women hold up half the sky" in tribute to women of his party.
History teachers in the schools I admitted to. mostly were very selfish persons: "you're just a pupil, and I AM THE TEACHER, so shut up and don't even dare to correct me: I AM ALWAYS RIGHT!"
One exclusion was in junior grade, when we learned the history of the ancient Greece, and I definitely knew more about the history of Olympics then she, ar than was written in schoolbook. And I had about 15 minutes for my narration in front of the class, instead of her.
Wasnt there also another woman who demanded to drive a T-34 because her husband got killed in the war? Sucks that i've never heard most of these stories.
Yes. She was a driver of the tank. Mark Felton has video about her. Title of the video: Fighting girlfriend.
Fighting girlfriend was the name of the tank can’t remember the name of the tanker. She was such a badass that she jumped out of her tank in the middle of battle to fix her tank. It eventually got her killed but I’m pretty sure she was awarded hero of the Soviet Union.

The man on the screen, the musician he 's there, or who...

This song has one of the best openings and choruses I've ever heard. Really excellent job!
To think the Po-2's 5-cylinder radial engine had only 130 horsepower. That's about the same power of a Toyota Corolla. And the witches did more than a lot of Soviet pilots who were flying Yaks, Pe-2 bombers and IL-2s. They were truly amazing.
Every time the air raid sirens start during a Sabaton show... you know what's about to happen
this was my introduction to sabaton and metal in general i just love it thank you guys
If a German pilot shot down a Nightwitch, they would be awarded the Iron Cross, in of which the Nightwitches considered it an honor.
easy target
@@acknodbikes5051
Try to find the target when you: Can't hear it + can't see it + don't know where they take off lines are located + don't know where they are coming from + don't know when.
Yeah, an easy target during the sunny day. But during the night you is their bitch.
@@acknodbikes5051 it was never a easy target. the plane was so slow the german pilots could not go slow enough to hit them.
There was a pilot called Witch Hunter because of him hunting the Night Witches. Shame we don't hear more of him.
@@acknodbikes5051 not really. The bombers' speed was lower than the minimum speed of German fighter planes which made them hard to target.
Thanks so much for making this! Night Witches is my favorite song. I have a friend who wrote a book on the Night Witches and I'm fascinated by the stories.
FINALLY! MY FAVORITE SONG!
I need a picture of baby Joakim with his short mohawk, badass beard and sunglasses.

Ah yes, colonel quack
Night witches is the song that introduced me to sabaton. I'm excited about this video.
This song is the one that made me discover+like Sabaton. And that concert we see in the video... was the very first day I heard and saw Sabaton (Hellfest 2017).
What a night ! I'll never forget that kick in my *ss when Night Witches kicked off.
And then, this song is also the first one that made me learn Sabaton wrote about history, and tought me about 588th Regiment (before I learnt also about Anzio's shore and some other young kings stepping on their throne).
Glad to have seen you (twice) at Knot/Hellfest 2019. Keep up the pace !
The first time I saw/heard this song live...I was in awe and horrified at the same time. It was so cool. The opening music, the sound of impending death just took my breath away.
Nice. One of my favorites songs from Heroes.
Just when I was wondering if I missed this episode, it pops up in my feed. Well worth the extra wait, as this is one of my all-time favorite Sabaton songs.
What BFV should've made missions about.
@@Ch4pp13 "Hstury" *stonks dude in background*
They should add USSR to the game... For the start... But they won't - new western policy says, that USA won the WWII, and there was no USSR. I guess BF 6 will be about brave US and British cyborg-women batallions defeating Nazi-German-Soviet alliance. Mark my words, it will be.
@@sentar_dv that actually sounds pretty cool. For a spinoff, not a main entry.
I've been waiting for this one. This is my favorite Sabaton song.

Fifty episodes already. Time flies. Every show I have been soon so far, you guys have always played it. It is one fucking great song. Those women were really tough and they were true soldiers. The background story from what came before is even better.
It really is. And time does fly. Can you imagine, just two weeks till the anniversary?

Got to hear nightwitches live. It was an absolutely amazing experience
Thanks for shedding light to historic topics that have gone silent for far too long!
Thanks Laura, we do what we can! :)
There was no school today, so Ive spent most of my time just chilling in my room, watching Sabaton History videos.
Best use of a Monday I can think of.
Learning + metal. It's a good combination, isn't it?
😎
"From the depths of hell in silence" sounds like from the gates of Ellis Island to me and I can not unhear it after listening to the song countless times.
Absolutely the exact same here. I was so confused at first.
when the album first came out and i heard the song I thought he said "from the gates of hell Parris island", I was like what do the Marines have to do with night witches.
Ok, so I'm not the only one who heard "Ellis island" that makes me feel a little bit better
Why did you go ahead and make that comment?
Why did I read it for that matter?
Was at the concert yesterday and it was absolutely amazing!!! Thx for the awesome show & episode!
8:08 "to death by the commisar". So are you a historian or a myths collectioner?
Someone's buttmad.
@scooty470 That's impossible! Comrade Stalin said that was Capitalist Propaga- Wait a second...
@scooty470 and how many people died? Tell me the numbers, and most importantly, where you got this information.
Thanks to this awesome song I learned about the Night Witches and this became my Sabaton's fav. Thank you so much for this song and this video!!!
You're welcome - cheers!
This was one of those songs I was waiting the most. It's not that easy to find info about the Night Witches.
My heart is joyful to find this.
It's been a near year already!!! This is amazing. To be around since your first upload to now. :,)
"We will Practice flying with a Biplane."
Girls: "It's too old!"
Boys: "Yeah! I'd rather fly a Jet!"
Russian Girls: **Night witches starts playing**
U-2 is the only biplane which took down a jet, so
@@chupasaurus Yea, I guess that fighter jet pilot was really embarrassed when he later had to report that he lost to a biplane and did so because he forgot to stay above his stall speed..
By the way, that was also a problem for the Germans as most if not all their fighter planes had higher stall speed than the maximum speed of the U-2 biplane
I’m so happy the night witches was the topic for sabaton history this week this is my favorite song and I think it would be really cool to have an official music video for this song
For example me)
Also there was the problem that if you survived the crash and made it back to friendly lines you would be arrested and likely killed
@@jacobnugent8159 No, well, this is already a real myth. Filtering - yes, there was. And many of them passed it quietly. It is standard practice to simply establish the authenticity of documents and other data. But an immediate execution, that's nonsense. I understand why you think so, these myths are tenacious. If anything, this is my family's personal experience.
@@jacobnugent8159 And returning to the Night Witches. I do not know if there is anything on the topic in your language, but if you can find the memoirs of the pilots, read it. There are a lot of really hard moments without too much. Exactly memories. There are a lot of heavy lines and without myths.
About 20 years ago I rented an audiobook, Nadia of The Night Witches. Author escapes my memory. A good read...
I used this song as an alarm for more than a year. Each day, 5 am this would be my signal to wake up.
Now everytime I hear the intro I feel like I need to wake up :D
This is one of the first sabaton songs I typically show to people. It is a really hard hitting song that helps define sabaton, especially when people don't know sabaton.

The customer then proceeded to ask "So what's the book about?"
I had no answer...
Short attention span, a predictable result of American public "education".
