Reiner really is the best character of the show for me. He really got that double personality thing going on and he can't seem to decide if the people on the island are actually devils or not. In one sentence he talks about them like they are the worst people on earth but yet in another he can describe them like you would describe any other human, with their own quirks and personalities. It's so well done.

Just a detail to add that you might have misunderstood- Ymir actually went with them fully aware that she was going to get offered to the next Warrior. That was the deal they made. That's why she wrote her last letter to Historia and passed it on to Reiner in S3. She thinks she was a mistake and she paid it back by returning the Jaw Titan to them. Though I personally think it was just a series of unfortunate events and not really her fault. I guess another one is that Braun family dinner. Where Reiner subconsciously humanized the people of Paradis when everyone else in the room was labeling them "island devils" and did not see them humanely. That one actually hit close to home for me. Other people might not think treating a group of people as actual devils is a little too extreme and unrealistic of a mentality but it happens. But yeah. Reiner talked like Eren and the rest were pretty normal people. There was nothing actually evil about what he was saying. It was his internal conflict all over again. It's also pretty real honestly. Feeding your citizens this propaganda that a group of people are devils and mentally conditioning them to hate those people. And then the ones to wake up and realize that they're all just humans too are usually the soldiers who had actual experience interacting with the "devils."
Regarding your questions on animation, they used an animation technique called rotoscopy several times in this episode (Udo getting angry, Gabi talking to her parents...). It's when you use an actor who plays the scene that you record and then you have video references that you draw onto it to animate the characters within the show. I think this technique was used a lot in Anastasia as well. I can't tell if it's an artistic choice or if it was used due to time constraints in the case of AOT.
Either way I kind of like that the changes in animation create sort of an "alien" feel for the beginning of this season, since coming off the end of Season 3 it almost feels like you're watching another show.
Oh, here's one of my favorite episodes, heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. It's not the most popular opinion, but I feel incredibly sorry for Gabi here in the dinner scene. It hurts to watch how this smiling cheerful girl is being broken, turning into a thoughtless soldier, suppressing even small doubts (and there are doubts, otherwise she wouldn't have asked Reiner). And it hurts even more that her parents love her, and don't even understand how terrible they are doing. And yet, this homecoming is still very touching.
Zeke does know he has royal blood, but he’s keeping it secret for the same reason Eren didn’t tell the military that he can use the founders power if he makes contact with a Titan of royal blood. Marley would turn Zeke into a breeding bull in a sense if they knew he had royal blood. They’d make him have as many children as possible so they can have control of the founding titan and have a supply of royal blood.
I love all the little subtle storytelling details in season 4. The Audience doesn't get slowly introduced to the power structure in Marley's military and are left piecing it together based on how different characters interact with each other. We get to see how even Zeke is treated by the general and other military leaders, and how in awe Colt is that Zeke was even allowed to address the general directly. We get to see how all the military leaders and higher ranks are seated comfortably in the train with tables and chairs, meanwhile the entire Eldian unit is stuffed into the cargo train cars with no seating at all, just expected to sit on the floor like livestock or inanimate cargo. The Eldians were going to be told to shut up but were given a pass this one time, because being allowed to be proud or cheer for a person who saved them all is against the rules. The Honorary Marleyans in the Warrior Unit are allowed to sit up the front with the other military leaders, but Reiner chooses to stay in the cargo hold with the others. Reiner's choice of words when talking to Falco and Gabi are very telling of his own beliefs. He uses the words of the propaganda and indoctrination that all the Eldians have been forced to accept as truth, but since he has been to the island and he knows the world isnt actually that simple, he twists the meaning of what he tells them to teach them to be careful what they say, and what they think. Falco picks up on this in the train, realizing that Reiner doesnt agree with what he is saying, but is telling Falco to be more careful who you talk like that in front of. Gabi on the other hand doesnt really understand at the dinner table. Reiner describes all of his friends in the worst framing possible, but still manages to make their evil devilish wickedness seem very human and mostly harmless. Reiner's mother picks up on it and reinforces the Marleyan propaganda, either because she has fully bought into it or because she knows its the best way to stay safe. Season 4 does a fantastic job of letting the minor details give a lot of context to the story as its being told.
This is the season where death flags may as well be replaced with "deep trauma" flags Also, being caught up and knowing what we know, seeing the few things that are there is entertaining as hell
I love this episode because everything Reiner says here is meant to be taken with a massive grain of salt, he prattles on about how inheriting one of the 9 is a great honor and how everyone on paradis were devils, but if you actually look at what he's saying you can tell he means the complete opposite, genius character writing
Something interesting about Reiners mom reaction to the people of paradis is how shocked it was to hear that they were just normal people like the eldians living in Marley and not devils like they have been described to be

Just to clarify about the timeline of s4: Magath mentioned they started the Paradis mission 9 years ago which is the first episode of AOT. After the first 2 episodes of s1, there was 5 year time skip. The events of the rest of s1, s2 and s3 all happened within the span of a year. And finally there's a 4 year time skip between s3 and s4, to be more specific a 4 year time skip between Zeke and Reiner's defeat and s4.
9 Years since the island operation started(Reiner and Bert kicking down the wall) 4 years since the island operation ended(Reiner and Zeke getting their ass beat in Shiganshina at the end of season 3.)

Reiner has to be one of the most tragic characters in anime. He was brain washed into thinking everyone on paradis island were monsters, only to realize they were just normal people. The guilt he feels must be huge.
Also, nt a spoiler, but Reiner's split personality problem is no longer an issue. I see a lot of people trying to "figure out" which one he is. But that's all past him. Ad the thing on the train with Reiner being a bit creepy, he's trying to make sure Falco doesn't just spout stuff like that. He wants him to be safe, but not talk about certain things to loud. As shown by how he interacts afterwards

The animation technique you spotted there was what's called Rotoscoping. They filmed an actor doing the lines and animated over it to give the performance believable human weight, and the framerate and styling is to help it blend with the show's usual style a bit more.

The animation style you’re speaking of is called rotoscoping. It’s basically taking either motion capture footage of a real actor, or using a 3D model (but usually it’s live actors) as reference to map out character movements before adding the art and proper animations over top of that initial skeleton; rather than an artist drawing their perception of each individual frame in gradual motion. It allows for a more realistic and natural set of movements to be portrayed, although the usual requirement of a lower frame rate for those motions can sometimes make it stand out too hard from the rest of the anime as a whole and come across a bit janky. I think they used it effectively and sparingly here though
Season 1 Episode 1 when they broke the wall in Shinganshina and Wall Maria happened 9 years ago. Season 3 Episode 13-19 when Zeke/Reiner/Bertholdt fought the scouts at Shinganshia and lost, happened 4 years ago. The season 3 finale happened 3 years ago, Season1 Trost Arc up until the Basement reveal in season 3 took about 5 months, then the S3 finale was 6ish months time skip over the winter/spring until all the titans inside Wall Maria were killed off and the land was declared safe to re-inhabit for civilians. Thats why it can seem confusing, depending on when they are talking about and which side is doing the talking; the time skip changes duration.
Also in case you havent had it answered yet; Reiner's mother has a red armband because when a person becomes a warrior their entire family is given the "honorary marleyan" status, which comes with the red armband. Its a pretty minor detail overall, but if you think about it you realize how fucked up it is for the families who will want their own kid to get doomed to a 13 year lifespan for the sake of their own protection. Meanwhile the other kids their own kid competes against has a family too, and by your kid winning the other kid's family is losing. The mixed feelings between say: Gabi who wants to win to protect her family, Falco who wants to win to protect Gabi, Colt who has already locked in his role knowing that Falco doesnt need to succeed to be safe, Reiner who has already secured his family's safety who wants to protect Gabi by pushing Falco to protect her, and then the Grice and Braun families who are cheering for the shortened lifespan of their own kids for their own protection, at the cost of the protection of the other families and the life of the other family's kids. Just one of those details that is kinda insane the more you think about. Great reaction as always!
Ymir went with the Warriors knowing that she'd get eaten. She feel bad for the Warriors having their plans screwed up because of her eating Marcel. And she know she'll die in a few years anyway because of the Curse of Ymir. She kept talking about wether if there's a future or not for people inside the walls, because she knows herself that she didn't have any future. She was also grateful to be human again and she regretted nothing but not having married Historia.
She was also hedging her bets, since she made Reiner and Barry promise, that if they won, they had to do everything in their power to save Historia and take her back with them. That way, either her bet on Eren works out and Historia is safe OR they lose but her bet on Reiner and Barry at least gives Historia a chance to survive.

I like to think of the dinner scene with Reiner in one of two ways. Either these are the worst examples he can think up, or when trying to recall negative memories all he can think about are the positive ones. Either way, it shows how Reiner truly feels about the people he met on Paradis.
If I remember correctly they had at least some of the character scenes acted out by real people and then rotoscoped them. That's why the movements look so real. Albeit due to the extra time and work this takes, they had to cut back on the frames per second for those scenes, paying for the realistic movement with some choppyness. Still totally worth it in my opinion. The red armband is showing all "Honorary Marleyans" not just titan shifters. When an Eldian becomes a titan, not only they themselves, but also their direct relatives are elevated to that status. If you go back to the scene were everyone is welcomes by their parents, you'll see that all the parents of the Warriors are wearing the red bands.
For the record, Zeke is fully aware of his royal lineage. He’s keeping it a secret because if Marley found out they would force him to have children they could use as weapons as future warrior candidates. Even without his daddy issues, it makes perfect sense why he would rather never risk his own children being used like that.
It's been 9 years since the mission began aka episode one and 4 years since they abandoned the mission after being defeated by Eren and like 3 and a half to 3 years since the end of the last season when Eren and the others reached the sea
Oh, Ymir totally knew she was going to die eaten by another warrior, if she went with Reiner and Bert. She still decided to go with them anyway because she sympathized with them and felt like she kind of owed it to them (since Ymir would have spent the eternity, or at least the rest of her life until the scouts found her, trapped in the form of a titan pure, if it weren't for the kids warriors crossing her path).
I can say this now: Galliard is the my favorite character in season 4 because he got to eat out Titan Mommy Ymir fr. He ate her out before Historia and that thought makes me chuckle in a very morbid way.
so something you may have missed in this episode, Reiner espousing all the loyalty to marley stuff is protecting Falco and Galliard from suspicion, galliard was about to say some treasonous stuff so reiner interrupted him. Reiner is basically marley (and the shows!) whipped dog at this point. All he can do is try to prevent what happened to him from happening to other people

If they doubt the loyalty of one of them, this warrior will likely have his power passed to another warrior before the war start and his/her family would probably face consequences too).

Oh yeah. The anime is not subtle. Marly has become like Germany during WW2. They give Eldians a few more liberties obviously.. But not many. And the parallels are supposed to be drawn. The red arm band means you are an honourary Marlean, which includes your family. Basically it's the highest class Eldians are afforded in their society, which basically means they are treated like normal humans (for the most part). White arm bands means you are trash that is easily thrown away (Edlian scum), Yellow means you are a candidate for becoming a warrior (treated like second class citizens, but still treated better than white bands).
You hit the nail on the head on why the AoT community is as toxic as it is. It pretty much started with the Erwin vs Armin decision, and only got worse from there.

Umh idk i think in this case its pretty clear the cast we followed are the good guys coz they legit knew shit, like, they got no memories of no history or nothing, they were just vibing and trying to live and the problem was the titans that Marley kept releasing on the port of the island. And even now in S4 that still holds truth like, a bunch of ppl died coz Marley wanted the resources and the founding titan power to keep conquering other countries, Eren and the others were just trying to live in peace. Sure this season shows that both sides have good ppl, but in the big scale Marley is definitely in the wrong, hell they use Eldians like suicide bombers.

It hurts to watch how this smiling cheerful girl is being broken, turning into a thoughtless soldier, suppressing even small doubts (and there are doubts, otherwise she wouldn't have asked Reiner). And it hurts even more that her parents love her, and don't even understand how terrible they are doing. And yet, this homecoming is still very touching.
it's not an unpopular opinion, that was literally the author's intention, and I'm pretty sure most people picked upon this.
Zeke does know he has royal blood, but he’s keeping it secret for the same reason Eren didn’t tell the military that he can use the founders power if he makes contact with a Titan of royal blood. Marley would turn Zeke into a breeding bull in a sense if they knew he had royal blood. They’d make him have as many children as possible so they can have control of the founding titan and have a supply of royal blood.
Ah, and here we begin one of my favorite subplots in the entire series. The "Reiner is absolutely not okay" plot.
I love all the little subtle storytelling details in season 4. The Audience doesn't get slowly introduced to the power structure in Marley's military and are left piecing it together based on how different characters interact with each other. We get to see how even Zeke is treated by the general and other military leaders, and how in awe Colt is that Zeke was even allowed to address the general directly. We get to see how all the military leaders and higher ranks are seated comfortably in the train with tables and chairs, meanwhile the entire Eldian unit is stuffed into the cargo train cars with no seating at all, just expected to sit on the floor like livestock or inanimate cargo. The Eldians were going to be told to shut up but were given a pass this one time, because being allowed to be proud or cheer for a person who saved them all is against the rules. The Honorary Marleyans in the Warrior Unit are allowed to sit up the front with the other military leaders, but Reiner chooses to stay in the cargo hold with the others.
Reiner's choice of words when talking to Falco and Gabi are very telling of his own beliefs. He uses the words of the propaganda and indoctrination that all the Eldians have been forced to accept as truth, but since he has been to the island and he knows the world isnt actually that simple, he twists the meaning of what he tells them to teach them to be careful what they say, and what they think.
Falco picks up on this in the train, realizing that Reiner doesnt agree with what he is saying, but is telling Falco to be more careful who you talk like that in front of. Gabi on the other hand doesnt really understand at the dinner table. Reiner describes all of his friends in the worst framing possible, but still manages to make their evil devilish wickedness seem very human and mostly harmless. Reiner's mother picks up on it and reinforces the Marleyan propaganda, either because she has fully bought into it or because she knows its the best way to stay safe.
Season 4 does a fantastic job of letting the minor details give a lot of context to the story as its being told.
Nine years since they were sent to their mission on Paradis, four years since Reiner came back.
This is the season where death flags may as well be replaced with "deep trauma" flags
Also, being caught up and knowing what we know, seeing the few things that are there is entertaining as hell
I love this episode because everything Reiner says here is meant to be taken with a massive grain of salt, he prattles on about how inheriting one of the 9 is a great honor and how everyone on paradis were devils, but if you actually look at what he's saying you can tell he means the complete opposite, genius character writing
Something interesting about Reiners mom reaction to the people of paradis is how shocked it was to hear that they were just normal people like the eldians living in Marley and not devils like they have been described to be
To clarify armbands now, Grey is Eldian civilian, Yellow is Warrior candidate and Red is Honorary Marleyan which means you're either a Warrior (Titan Shifter) or you're directly related to one of the warriors

Nine years ago, they attacked Paradise. Four years ago, they lost the Colossal Titan. Three years ago, Eren and company made it to the sea. Zeke has one year left to live. Reiner has maybe three. Eren is about the same, I think.
When Reiner was talking about the others, the point is that he is humanizing them even while he claims they are devils. He specifically says that "There were all kinds of people there" which Gabi couldn't understand. She's pretty much indoctrinated into the Marley view of Eldians.
You may be the first person I've seen love Gabi. The fandom HATES her. I'm sure you'll come to understand why.

Just to clarify about the timeline of s4:
Magath mentioned they started the Paradis mission 9 years ago which is the first episode of AOT.
After the first 2 episodes of s1, there was 5 year time skip. The events of the rest of s1, s2 and s3 all happened within the span of a year.
And finally there's a 4 year time skip between s3 and s4, to be more specific a 4 year time skip between Zeke and Reiner's defeat and s4.
9 Years since the island operation started(Reiner and Bert kicking down the wall)
4 years since the island operation ended(Reiner and Zeke getting their ass beat in Shiganshina at the end of season 3.)

Also the only two titans that Marley doesn't have are the Attack and Colossal so it's interesting how Marley essentially became the new Eldian empire with how they use their seven to dominate the world yet the Eldian's are seen as devils
It's been pointed out incessantly. Also slight correction, Marley is missing, founding titan, attack titan, female titan, and the colossal Titan. Remember the whole point was the retrieve the founding titan, and attack titan afaik has never been in Marley control.

Reiner has to be one of the most tragic characters in anime. He was brain washed into thinking everyone on paradis island were monsters, only to realize they were just normal people. The guilt he feels must be huge.
Also, nt a spoiler, but Reiner's split personality problem is no longer an issue. I see a lot of people trying to "figure out" which one he is. But that's all past him. Ad the thing on the train with Reiner being a bit creepy, he's trying to make sure Falco doesn't just spout stuff like that. He wants him to be safe, but not talk about certain things to loud. As shown by how he interacts afterwards
You have to admit those panning shots in this episode were superb especially the one where Zeke lit his cigarette and was walking up the stairs

Oh FYI! The two missing Titans from Marly's army are:
- The Founding Titan, previously held by the king of the Walls, Grisha Yeager, now in control of Eren.
- The Attack Titan, now in control of Eren Yeager. His main Titan.
So when they talk about having been in control of 7 of the 9 (before invading Paradis and losing Annie and Berthold) they are excluding those two Titans because they're on the island :)
The animation technique you spotted there was what's called Rotoscoping. They filmed an actor doing the lines and animated over it to give the performance believable human weight, and the framerate and styling is to help it blend with the show's usual style a bit more.
You have NO idea how much setup is going on in this episode. It's genuinely a masterclass on storytelling that only becomes obvious after the next few episodes

The animation style you’re speaking of is called rotoscoping. It’s basically taking either motion capture footage of a real actor, or using a 3D model (but usually it’s live actors) as reference to map out character movements before adding the art and proper animations over top of that initial skeleton; rather than an artist drawing their perception of each individual frame in gradual motion. It allows for a more realistic and natural set of movements to be portrayed, although the usual requirement of a lower frame rate for those motions can sometimes make it stand out too hard from the rest of the anime as a whole and come across a bit janky. I think they used it effectively and sparingly here though
Season 1 Episode 1 when they broke the wall in Shinganshina and Wall Maria happened 9 years ago.
Season 3 Episode 13-19 when Zeke/Reiner/Bertholdt fought the scouts at Shinganshia and lost, happened 4 years ago.
The season 3 finale happened 3 years ago, Season1 Trost Arc up until the Basement reveal in season 3 took about 5 months, then the S3 finale was 6ish months time skip over the winter/spring until all the titans inside Wall Maria were killed off and the land was declared safe to re-inhabit for civilians.
Thats why it can seem confusing, depending on when they are talking about and which side is doing the talking; the time skip changes duration.
Also in case you havent had it answered yet; Reiner's mother has a red armband because when a person becomes a warrior their entire family is given the "honorary marleyan" status, which comes with the red armband.
Its a pretty minor detail overall, but if you think about it you realize how fucked up it is for the families who will want their own kid to get doomed to a 13 year lifespan for the sake of their own protection. Meanwhile the other kids their own kid competes against has a family too, and by your kid winning the other kid's family is losing.
The mixed feelings between say: Gabi who wants to win to protect her family, Falco who wants to win to protect Gabi, Colt who has already locked in his role knowing that Falco doesnt need to succeed to be safe, Reiner who has already secured his family's safety who wants to protect Gabi by pushing Falco to protect her, and then the Grice and Braun families who are cheering for the shortened lifespan of their own kids for their own protection, at the cost of the protection of the other families and the life of the other family's kids.
Just one of those details that is kinda insane the more you think about.

Ymir went with the Warriors knowing that she'd get eaten. She feel bad for the Warriors having their plans screwed up because of her eating Marcel. And she know she'll die in a few years anyway because of the Curse of Ymir. She kept talking about wether if there's a future or not for people inside the walls, because she knows herself that she didn't have any future. She was also grateful to be human again and she regretted nothing but not having married Historia.
She was also hedging her bets, since she made Reiner and Barry promise, that if they won, they had to do everything in their power to save Historia and take her back with them. That way, either her bet on Eren works out and Historia is safe OR they lose but her bet on Reiner and Barry at least gives Historia a chance to survive.

I like to think of the dinner scene with Reiner in one of two ways. Either these are the worst examples he can think up, or when trying to recall negative memories all he can think about are the positive ones. Either way, it shows how Reiner truly feels about the people he met on Paradis.
The red armband means that you are either the direct familiar of a Warrior or a Warrior itself, not all red armbands are warriors or titans
If I remember correctly they had at least some of the character scenes acted out by real people and then rotoscoped them. That's why the movements look so real. Albeit due to the extra time and work this takes, they had to cut back on the frames per second for those scenes, paying for the realistic movement with some choppyness. Still totally worth it in my opinion.
The red armband is showing all "Honorary Marleyans" not just titan shifters. When an Eldian becomes a titan, not only they themselves, but also their direct relatives are elevated to that status. If you go back to the scene were everyone is welcomes by their parents, you'll see that all the parents of the Warriors are wearing the red bands.
For the record, Zeke is fully aware of his royal lineage. He’s keeping it a secret because if Marley found out they would force him to have children they could use as weapons as future warrior candidates. Even without his daddy issues, it makes perfect sense why he would rather never risk his own children being used like that.

Oh, Ymir totally knew she was going to die eaten by another warrior, if she went with Reiner and Bert. She still decided to go with them anyway because she sympathized with them and felt like she kind of owed it to them (since Ymir would have spent the eternity, or at least the rest of her life until the scouts found her, trapped in the form of a titan pure, if it weren't for the kids warriors crossing her path).
I can say this now: Galliard is the my favorite character in season 4 because he got to eat out Titan Mommy Ymir fr.
He ate her out before Historia and that thought makes me chuckle in a very morbid way.

so something you may have missed in this episode, Reiner espousing all the loyalty to marley stuff is protecting Falco and Galliard from suspicion, galliard was about to say some treasonous stuff so reiner interrupted him. Reiner is basically marley (and the shows!) whipped dog at this point. All he can do is try to prevent what happened to him from happening to other people
In fact, only Reiner and Zeke realized that the room was bugged. Probably Pierck too, I think her character is smart enough for that, but Galliard and Colt didn't realize it. So Galliard starts talking some shit about the Tybur family and would probably talk shit about Martley too until Reiner interrupted him. Reiner started saying those things more to save Galliard's ass and also so that Marley wouldn't doubt of him too (in the manga this is made more explicit with Reiner's thoughts, but he knows that before the start of the next war the generals want to make sure about the loyalty of the warriors. If they doubt the loyalty of one of them, this warrior will likely have his power passed to another warrior before the war start and his/her family would probably face consequences too).

I'm pretty sure the red armbands are given to the inheritors of one of the nine titans loyal to Marley as well as their family. That's the whole reason some of the candidates are so desperate to become chosen as the next inheritors. If they can be chosen, their whole family will gain a much better position compared to the other Eldians.

I think Marley reflects WW2 Germany with Interment Zone Eldians having the class system of Jewish state (Ashkenazim , Mizrahim & Sephardim)... but unlike Eldians whom just raise in benefits from their captors this class spells racism!
Oh yeah. The anime is not subtle. Marly has become like Germany during WW2. They give Eldians a few more liberties obviously.. But not many. And the parallels are supposed to be drawn. Including the ominous opening theme which everyone gets visions of WW2 when watching and listening to.
As far as sides go.. Reiner is Eren. For all intents and purposes, he is Eren from the other side. And he is a sweet man truly.. Thrown to the wolves
The red arm band means you are an honourary Marlean, which includes your family. Basically it's the highest class Eldians are afforded in their society, which basically means they are treated like normal humans (for the most part). White arm bands means you are trash that is easily thrown away (Edlian scum), Yellow means you are a candidate for becoming a warrior (treated like second class citizens, but still treated better than white bands).
You hit the nail on the head on why the AoT community is as toxic as it is. It pretty much started with the Erwin vs Armin decision, and only got worse from there.

Umh idk i think in this case its pretty clear the cast we followed are the good guys coz they legit knew shit, like, they got no memories of no history or nothing, they were just vibing and trying to live and the problem was the titans that Marley kept releasing on the port of the island.
And even now in S4 that still holds truth like, a bunch of ppl died coz Marley wanted the resources and the founding titan power to keep conquering other countries, Eren and the others were just trying to live in peace.
Sure this season shows that both sides have good ppl, but in the big scale Marley is definitely in the wrong, hell they use Eldians like suicide bombers.
If you thi k it's still a case of "good guys and bad guys" then rewatch this season. It's much deeper than that
