How do I make people understand the severity of it when they say, 'its just a belly ache, you'll be fine'. The guilt kills me. Like you said. Only people with IBS understand.

    • @JoCoates
      @JoCoates  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Oh god, that is the worst response ever. I think I you have to explain to them that it's much, much more than just a belly ache. Make them aware of what you have to deal with. That's what I've done!

I relate to you so much. I've had ibs for years and I've had enough. Unless you've got it nobody can understand the pain.

Just discovered your channel today. I have IBS-D, and currently am going through a bad flare.oh the gurgles. My stomach cramps up. If the flare is bad, I have to stay home, but I take Immodeum or Bentyl. Anxiety is a trigger, plus spicy foods and anything with tomatoes. Vick's Vapor Rub helps the pain surprisingly.

Please keep talking and raising awareness for IBS! As a long term IBS sufferer I have felt judged, isolated and ashamed for years about my condition and it’s relation to my anxiety and I find these videos so relatable that it eases me and love hearing people talk honestly about it because I am finally able to laugh with someone about how shit (pardon the pun) this condition is !!! Xx thanks so much for flying the flag of awareness it’s so important xx so much respect for you !!

I completely understand all of this. My stomach acts the same way. I get anxiety just leaving the house, due to being afraid I won't make it to the bathroom, if I have to go while I am out. I make sure I know where all bathrooms are every where I go. I won't go any place that doesn't have a bathroom. I can't take that risk. I get completely drained after as well. It takes all my energy.

Here's a tip, when you do have to go out, do some research first so you know where the nearest loos are. This is how I manage!

This is a strange thing to say as I've never actually met you Jo, but we're the same age with the same type of ibs and I feel really proud of you for keeping a full time job and for going abroad for your dream wedding! Duloxetine has been a life changing medication for me and I actually haven't had an episode of diarrhoea for a year now. I still can't quite believe it, and the pain is still there but it's more like the dull aches you describe after a flare-up rather than the awful cramps that make you gasp, double over, sometimes burst into tears!
Even though my symptoms have improved a lot I still feel the dread whenever I make plans to go somewhere or meet a friend that I'm going to have an ibs attack and embarrass myself. I wonder if the anxiety will ever go away? I think having severe ibs for a long period of time must rewire our brains to always expect the worst!
Thanks for another honest and helpful video.

What a brilliant video. Sums it all up. The planning takes the enjoyment out of every long trip or social event. It's a horrible issue and can be debilitating but like you say, you'll never know unless you're in that position. People say "well just go the toilet..."... and they don't get the anxiety if you're sitting there up a mountain enjoying the views with not a toilet in sight. Takes the living out of life.

Thank you so much for this, I've felt so alone with this, now suffering for about 2decades now with this horrible thing. Like you, I too have IBS-D, I've missed so many family functions , ect. Even some co-workers stopped inviting me to things, because I would always flake out at the last moment to this. Only my family and a few close friends know about this now, but it took me years to tell them about it, because I was so embarrassed about it. And' I also get very exhausted after a bowel movement, probably my exhaustion comes from actually having both IBS -D & C, and if I get everything out on the first one, I'm very very lucky. Usually if I go, I have to wait around to go again, before I leave the house. I could go on and on about my experience, but I truly just want to thank you so very much, for making this video. Now I know that, I'm not the only one in this world with this horrible disease.

Suffered with IBS for nearly 30 years. I've
Had full exams that show nothing wrong. After had my gallbladder out I suffered a great deal for 18 months or so. I've referred to the flares as colon migraines. Body signals time to poo. No problem but minutes later I feel urge again. That's when I know I will be sitting here (yes, I'm sitting on throne) for a long time. It feels like labor pains. I've sit with elbows on my thighs so much over the years I have permanent depressions. I take Imodium as soon as possible. Three tabs usually work. You have described my life. If I'm going to be traveling I premedicate. I also have a brief break when I had my hysterectomy. I had some large fibroids.

Congratulations!! Welcome back! I have IBS-A, never free. It sucks. Good thing we have good support! I stayed at a hotel (for the first time) last November, it was so scary to be away from my toilet! It was for an anime convention, lots of stress. It caused some problems and I ending up going home early. Sad time with ibs. I have to have imodium with me, if I don't have any, I have a panic attack. Gotta love ibs and anxiety.

Chelsea J I take 6 immodiums per day. You can take up to 8. 3 in the morning, 3 at night. Only way to semi control my IBS-D.

Hi,i have helicobacter pylori bacteria and ibs diharea, i just want to say that few months now i take omeprazole every morning and it really regulates my bowel movements, even if i have diharea it's only in the morning, never other time, always same time every morning, it is annoying cause if you want to sleep more you can't cause you need to wake up to go to toilet but than the rest of the day you are free and for me that is very helpful, my psychology is much better

If you ever talk to random people about it, you may come to notice quite a few people have it and just don’t talk about it. They eat things they know cause flare ups and take OTC items like Pepto bismal or lactaid or other things to try to limit the damage. People with Chrohn’s feel the same way we do. We’re all out here, we’re just not all talking about it in public.

Thank you for your honest videos. It's such a frustrating thing to live with and try to have a normal life inspite of it. For me the anxiety has gotten worse as I get older because I have suffered for 38 years with it. Can you offer any tips of how to cope with the panic and anxiety from the disabling symptoms? I would appreciate your advice because you have actually lived with IBS-D like I have.
