  • Guys, I went crazy with this one! I took on a huge project, and I wasn't sure if it was going to work, but in the end, I really loved it. I completely re-created Hogwarts in 3d for cinematic animations. Follow along to see the complete process from 3ds Max + V-Ray, to Unreal Engine 5! FULL DESCRIPTION
    This project ended up being pretty epic! First of all, it was heavy on the modeling, but then the environment building in Unreal Engine was pretty big too. In my opinion, it was worth all the work, because the final shots really came out looking cool. I learned lots of stuff along the way. Follow along for the whole process to see/learn all the things I went through to make this project happen. Get a behind the scenes look at what it takes to make a project like this, and just see how I work as an archviz professional. I think there are tons of things to learn from this one.

    I'm impressed by your fast workflow as I can tell you've done this as long as I have and are able to pump something out as quick as you did. From one 3d artist to another, I'm extremely proud of this.

    The thing that keeps it from being absolute top notch is it looks like an empty shell with nothing on the inside. It needs depth to feel like an actual building. Also, interior light intensity, temperature, placement and direction needs to be randomized. No building has all the light on all the time.

      Amazing skill and dedication! I can envision seasonal/holiday versions (students arriving by boats, pumpkins aglow, dementors patrolling, Christmas trees alight, spring trees a’blooming, etc). And then, of course, destroying it all in the Battle of Hogwarts. It is wonderful the franchise gives such fertile ground for imagination but even better when creative people like you can bring parts of the world to life.

    Fantastic installment as always. It's always great to see someone else's workflow. I work alone in a vacuum and even after more than 20-years in 3d I often wonder if I'm doing it the way the big dogs do. It was really nice the way you recorded this to show your process. It wasn't too fast nor too slow. I know it took a lot of time to even assemble the video aside from the project work. Thank you.

    As someone who doesn't 3D model at all (but would love to learn it one day), this looks impressive for 30 hours of work! I'm interested in seeing more time put into this project. The cinematic at 30:23 is my favorite and it feels a lot like the establishing shots from the movies. For me, capturing the essence and beauty of a "thousand year old" setting like this one is what makes it special, and you did well on that.
    If I could work on three areas, they would be the color grading, the landscape around the castle (flora, geography, weather) and adding a touch of life to make it feel less like a render. Something like birds flying over the castle, a flag fluttering in the wind, or a caravan traveling towards it.

    Fun fact: Hogwarts doesnt even match between movies. Each movie changes Hogwarts because each movie had a different director. The Standarized version of Hogwarts that most people remember is the one from the 6th movie, The Half Blood Prince. That is because the Hogwarts used in the 8th movie (7th movie had no Hogwarts) made some very unpopular changes to the design, specifically the bridge that joins Hogwarts to the main land. The movie that changes Hogwarts the most is the 3rd movie, the Prisoner of Azkaban. In movies 1 and 2 it was more Disney Castle and less Old Medieveal Castle, if you know what I mean. Movies 4 thru 8 kept Hogwarts mostly like in 3 but each one added more towers and buildings to it so the Hogwarts of the 6th movie is the most complete, as in has all the areas that had been used so far in the stories.

    I would have locked in the framing and camera sequence a bit sooner to allow focus on the details in the view that the end user sees.

    Just two missing/incorrect details that I noticed:
    1) instead of the gap on the left side of the grand staircase tower, (timestamp 30:09 ) there should be a "building" (halway/corridor) connecting it to the great hall
    2) the last bridge in the back (timestamp 28:02 ) should be a suspension bridge made of wood

    I’ve just discovered your channel and subscribed. You mentioned you were having problems with the fog working the way you wanted. In other rendering software if you don’t have the scene and models set up correctly scale wise in real terms it affects the camera lens and lighting strength. So I wondered if that was happening here. As one of the views I saw in your video in unreal engine the camera tilted up and there was a huge shift in perspective. So maybe scale needs looking at?

    • @Learn-archViz
      @Learn-archViz  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Definitely a possibility. My scale here was definitely a little too big overall. I considered changing it at one point but didn't, but we're talking 1.5 too big maybe. I didn't have a good scale reference when I started.

    Ok I’m new here. Love this video and would love to attempt to learn this program.
    Anyone have any recommendations on where to start?
    I’m a house flipper and would love to be able to do a model of houses I’m flipping so that I can truly get a real image of what I’m wanting to design in a house and be able to make changes digitally so I only have to do the real part once.

      Okay, so what I use here are professional tools, so they might a little bit too much for what you need. Steep learning curve, but very powerful. That said, I do have courses for learning these (3ds Max, V-Ray and UE4) in my links.
      But, for what you need (since I'm guessing photo realism and cinematics are not necessarily your ultimate goal) I would probably have different suggestions.
      For a beginning modeler I would probably recommend SketchUp because it is easy to learn and use for someone with no experience. Then, to actually render things, you can still use Unreal Engine like I do in the video, but there is actually a simpler version of it which is far more user friendly called Twinmotion. Twinmotion would probably do everything you would need. I have videos about it on my channel too. Datasmith is a software that can easily take your SketchUp model (or any other models) into Twinmotion or Unreal Engine to be rendered, apply materials, lighting, etc.

    • @Learn-archViz

      Datasmith will do it. I have videos about it. I just don't import the V-Ray lights and do them all in Unreal, but even if you did import them, they would still be using Lumen to render once they are in Unreal (assuming your scene is setup for Lumen)

      Not too many nanite objects, but some of the big stuff is. Yes to Lumen, with raytraced shadows on. Pretty high settings honestly, and performance was not an issue while building. Hi Adam! I want to ask you an important question. Considering today's architectural workflow and presentation styles, do you think that instead of visuals (corona), animation or real-time presentations (ue5) by navigating through the project are more important? The reason I ask is that if revisions are frequent, I think I can provide much faster feedback with ue5 rather than corona, and I think that people will now want to interact with the project more than photography and to navigate with vr glasses or a short animation movie. What do you think is the future of this industry if you include vr technology? I want to make my time and investment accordingly, your ideas are very important to me. Love to you.

    • @Learn-archViz
      @Learn-archViz  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is a great question, and one that I think about a lot and discuss on my channel. The answer is that it will all be important. We have to think of ourselves as visual communicators, and there are many ways to do this. We should be trained in all of them so that, depending on project needs and budgets, we can always offer the best solution. Sometimes that solution will be simple VR walkthroughs. Other times, it might just be a still rendering for a billboard. I use various different techniques in my daily work. For example, VR is the MOST effective thing for communicating the basic massing and layout of a building. On the other hand, if you just have 30 seconds to make a quick impression on a client with your design concept, a really flashy rendering might be best.

    I have never tried unreal, so don't shoot me. But can't you export camera views from 3dmax to unreal? I mean if you struggle in unreal, why not setup the views in the app you feel familiar with?
    I used to do this with a tender engine called Thea reander and I used blender to get shots. Blender was way more comfortable to move around. Cool thing was. The tender engine also had a backwards export function. So I could also move a camera back into blender and then tweak it a bit more

      I'm very familiar with many architectural modeling software, and I strongly disagree. There are other tools that, in the right hands, can be very similar, but none that are anywhere close to 6x faster. There aren't any shortcuts or magic tricks in the modeling here, just basic techniques over and over a million times. Some software will be marginally better at certain parts of it, and worse at other parts.
