And they died because He just wanted his gems back. You can see He realised, when He looked over his dead soldiers with guilt while he was holding out for his son. He was so desperate to get something, that belonged to his wife, when he realised, Gandalfs words were true. How deep must Love be, to send his soldiers into death and how loyal must his soldiers be, to not question this.

It is not an elk, but actually a deer. Similar to a pre-historic deear with very big horns that looked like an elk's, which lived on Earth millions of years ago. Also, if you look at its face closely, you will notice that it has a deer face rather than an elk face.
My heart goes out to Thranduil, his story is so heart breaking, and I love this character so much... Those Dwarves were complete bullies, and still expected Thranduil to support them in a time of need, Thranduil was still civil with them even after all the Dwarves have done to him, especially taunting him with the necklace that belonged to his wife, after them slamming that box shut he walked away, it shattered his heart, he still tried to work out a deal with the Dwarves one last time... before going into war with them, greedy little trolls got what they deserved in the end.
I couldn't agree more. Dragon sickness or not, not one drawf spoke up and said that what they did was wrong. Thorin was even there to see how angered Thranduil was and still had a nerve to say he lacked honor!
The thing with the necklage that belonged to bis wife was only in the movies. In the book there is mentioned that there was a disagreement about some gems. But it was not the dwarfes of erebor he had this twist with.
Psycho Gamer Well, dwarves with dragon sickness (or gold lust) slaughtered King Thingol and many of his people because they wanted the necklace that they had already been paid for, and more gold besides that. Thranduil and his father Oropher had been a part of that kingdom. He had more than just cause to be at the very least concerned.

I fell in love with this magnificent king He is broken in heart yet a true valiant warrior in every way and so beautiful. Legolas has a lot to live up to And he is so wonderful himself.
