Fair enough, but I guarantee you warm boots hats and gloves are the way to go for swimming , try the three fingered mitten g1 7mm water proof, build up your character by learning to take these mothers on or off, at home a few times before you go near the beach, . they cost 80 bucks, but were talking staying in for about an hour in 7 degrees. 7 mm neoprene sock, available on aliexpress and 2 hats of 3mm mm each. orca are good and wont blow off when the waves wallop into you. its good to have a few different strokes, back stroke is good for getting through a bit of wave also. good luck and if you mix your strokes but like the crawl. save the free style till last and always leave a bit in reserve. and you wont need to listen to these owl ones prattle on.

The cold shock response and getting used to it, I can fully relate.
However, my own personal cold shock response is that breathing actually gets blocked, especially with water touching the face (cheek bone area). Also, measuring heart rate, it immediately drops like a stone, then slowly gets back up.

I am a swimmer with ~20 years of swimming experience in the pools, started 4 months ago to practice the Wim Hoff Method, last weeks ago wanted to raise the bar so I started swimming in the ocean (~15ºC) without wet suit, if felt great because I am already adapted to the cold because of the practice of Wim Hoff method, I plan to continue because the effects in the next days are like taking a vacation, is like recharging the batteries.

I was on vacation recently+went into the 15° ocean in just my swimsuit. Got that cold water shock response but I'm a strong swimmer who practices yoga so I thoroughly enjoyed all of it.
I'm a fan of whim Hoff too, and now having experienced it for myself I'm kind of in love. There's something really calming about only focusing on your breath and relaxation. In the ocean you can't fight the waves, you can't fight the temperature, you have to submit and let go. Very beautiful experience.

I live in the prairies of Canada and blessed to live on a lake. Currently the water is a little hard until April. I do swim in the cold water spring to fall and rather enjoy it. So far only a wet suit but will up my game this spring to booties and gloves. Guess these old bones getting sensitive to the cold. For safety my wife follows with a pontoon boat to scoop me out of water if need be. I think she loves me cause she hasn't run me over yet. Good info in the video. Love it.

Stephan, well done on two fronts, swimming in cold water and having a support crew. For me, my last swim was 10 Oct 2020, Meech Lake in Gatineau Park as I live in Ottawa. Not sure of the water temperature but it was falling quickly, I have difficulty with my hands and feet in the winter as I am always cold, bought a pair of neoprene booties/gloves, boy what a difference. I could have swam for a few more weeks but it was the end of my training season, time to rest. My spouse loves to paddle board and she was right there beside me as my support crew. Take care, stay safe. Gilles from Ottawa, PS: two additional tips from Lucy Charles, warm water from a thermos poured into the front/back of your wetsuit just before entering + putting your face only in the water a few times to get over the initial shock, 2-3 minutes after the initial start and swimming is fine.

Hello GTN I am an ex NCAA swimmer. I overlooked swimming leg of a 70.3 last month. I had all the struggles you mention during the race. I should have gotten out of the water I was in danger. My pride didn’t let me “go out on the swim”. I was wondering if you can go more into detail about training and preparing for a cold swim before a cold race. And what to do on race day if you haven’t prepared for that specific temperature. Or What to do if the water is colder or feels colder than expected.

I've recently started swimming with a group that has been doing open water swims in the ocean since the summer. I wear a wetsuit, thermal base layer, gloves, boots, and a neoprene cap, and don't really feel the cold water except on my face and neck. I had been thinking it wasn't really affecting me, but I was finding myself out of breath just after a few strokes and not wanting to put my face in the water just to be able to breathe easier. It has been really frustrating, but I now feel like this may be a combination of increased respiration from the shock response and restricted respiration from the extra layers on my torso. I know the panicked feeling of not being able to breathe comes from a buildup of CO2, so I'm more likely not breathing as effectively. I suppose practice will make perfect.

Freezing water is no joke when you are not prepared and suddenly get thruster into it without warning. The cold is really shocking and your muscles will instantly lock up. Your heart races really hard and heart attack becomes a real possibility. Learned this the hardway when the ice under my snowmobile gave way while speeding across a frozen lake one warm winter day. Fortunately some ice fishermen saw me crash through the ice and yanked me out.

If you are competing in a triathlon or open water race, getting into the water a few minutes before the start, then getting out just before the start will reduce the cold water shock, and get your body into "cold water mode". This helps physically, but also gets you into a mental place where you are excited to start swimming and not anxious about the cold water.
