      It emphasizes how hard it is to get your breath in cold water! Perfect example of how we all feel!

    • @oscartruitt3433
      @oscartruitt3433 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's obvious that you were experiencing afterdrop (the first stage of hypothermia). I think you were in the water a little too long for that first swim. Be careful. When you see yourself getting confused, that's the time to get out and get warm. Fergus should have seen that. Of course the wetsuit was a good buffer.

    I'm 72 and have been cold water swimming for 15 years. Thank you, Fergus. Your humor, self-effacement and clarity offer wonderful, inspiration and encouragement to all those who can benefit from your thoughtful wisdom on the subject. Bravo, good man!! We swim till there's frost on the pumpkin and beyond here in the Hudson Valley. The iceman swimmeth.

      Nice! Idk Where you are from, but If you are from a cold place, How do you deal with the cold in the Winter? Is it not freezing? Bc i kind of want to do more open water Swimming knowing the effects of Chlorine in Swimming pools. Kind of want to do less of it.

    Three more things I'd add in.
    1) mental prep for the washing machine start (social distancing was great for more civilised swim starts!) if they go back to mass starts.
    2) Don't rely on other's sighting, and just following a swimmer in front. It helps, but you might end up zig-zagging!
    3) Post swim cake is mandatory 😄
    Great video, I love the collab and content, and I adore the swimming in particular!

    Good tips, but did you keep getting in and out of the water between steps? If so, no wonder you were shivering so much with that and the cold water! Definitely need to get out of the wetsuit and into warm layers before the pizza. As you said though, the worst is over after that. 😀

    Yep my first open water swim in super cold water like that was a bit rough. Definitely takes your breath away… which isn’t ideal for endurance!

    Booties will make big difference, standing around making videos makes you cold 🤣get in get done and get the f*** out . Done 3 deg riverwater other day in trunks first time , yeah cold but only 3 mins and then toasty getting dressed. Ive been colder in a wetsuit cos it lasts longer and you get hypothermic if you dont keep moving. Had previously only done 6 deg in 5mm suit. Its fun with people cos you all complain how cold it is and laugh and then feel good after. It is empowering and it has health benefits, I think you done really well x

    I thinnk the title "all you need to know open water swim" it doesn't represent what you show.
    I like how Andre Wiersig approach the topic: you have to conditioning your organism for a while to cold water, or you won't suceed
    He conditioned submerging in freezing water tub for years
    Is not a joke, if you enter hipotermia stage, you are done unless you have a coach next to you that pull you out of water ontime
