I prefer your educational and DIY videos over your tank showcase videos. I would love if you could show us how to DIY some saltwater equipment. It seems hard to DIY saltwater equipment because everything is so high tech. I would also love to see more of your unconventional secrets. People don't have to copy you exactly and you might share something that really helps someone even if people tell you "don't do that."

No I'm a idiot. ( sorry I was arguing with myself about responding . Internal warfare. I don't really agree because I like both the specific species and looks at tank dynamics. But I do agree we need those diy mechanical hacks. No one is as detailed or sound as in safe for the least amount of damage. His book has a lot of checks and safeties . We need more builds. I need a snack! I'm just acting up!@#% . That is what the lighest wrestler on my team says to get attention when people aren't seeing the big picture. Joey we need more builds and ideas even scraps and fails they would be priceless. What do you think about an overhead sump getting filled by a small pump or air pump and using the pressure to circulate the water the tank. I need a snack! Good day kind Aquarist !

Love the tips and tricks, I’ll have to admit I use some interesting methods. For cleaning an empty tank I have a soft sponge attachment for my drill. Also works on the outside of a tank. I use dawn dish soap too! Works great and gentle on counters too.

I’ve worked out since I was 15.(my son is now 15 and comes with me) I haven’t really taken it seriously though and will spend a few months going consistently and then stop. I always have. Now with my son coming, I’ll stay more committed. Perhaps… and very unlikely, I’ll take my diet as serious. But beer/pizza is my first love. Gym is like 18th.

Joey all you need to do is add 1ml peroxide per ten gallons for a week cyano will die. I've had reef tanks for 30 years it's the only thing that works. Siphoning only spreads it. Like so Joey sees please.

Joey, give me all of your lazy cheap tricks I'm here for it! I mean I'm here for the puffers and all, but I'm here for the easy maintenance. It's the one thing that stops me from getting my own aquarium: spending hours cleaning glass and filter and UGH I've enough of cleaning doing my flat I don't need more lol That squeegee is genius. So's the way you dealt with the sino-bacteria. My last aquarium was a five gallon that got over run by snails and then algea and I ended up just throwing everything out once I got the fish away to another home, thinking I'm not made to have fish. Those "cheap lazy tricks" are the stuff I take notes on.

I am also a strong advocate for doing and sticking to what works for you! Why would anyone stop what is working anyway if it's not harmful and you know what you are doing???
Clearly you are doing something right because ALL of your fish are doing amazing. I have been watching your channel for years now and I think you are the reason that my fish are doing so well to! Keep it up Joey! Thank you for all you do.

I have been watching your videos since 2008 and I STILL have YET to hear #2. I hope that by time I retire in 25 years from now, I will finally hear what #2 reason was.
You never actually get to the second of "couple of reasons" and I hope that one day your immeasurable contributions to the community will finally lead you there. Perhaps when you decide to sign off for the last time.
Every time you say "weird" or "unorthodox" is exactly why we come to watch your channel. Because that is literally what we do. Your bucket siphon pour trick is literally what I did forever in my 300 gal and back when I had like 50 aquariums I did just that... into a net with a wad of filter floss.

  • @RyanTheHuehue

I like this video. You don't need fancy equipment to keep fish. You just need to keep with proper maintenance, and a healthy stock.
    Also, on my experience...
A rusty rod will not kill your fish.
A few drops of Windex won't kill your fish (I spilled a few bottlecaps worth on my 50g, it will get diluted)
A few drops of Bar Keeper's Friend (to remove hard water stains) will not kill your fish.
I even accidentally put a recently bleached rock back on my 30g and nothing bad happened. But I do recommend doing water change if you accidentally did this.

Love this video. Do more please. I have a different version of putting water back in the aquarium. I couldn’t figure out why detritus was constantly on the surface even after a water change and vacuum in my 10 gallon. I attached a media bag filled with floss to the end of my syphon to catch the detritus. As the bucket filled with water I had a pump pushing the filtered water back into the aquarium and could throughly vacuum the detritus without emptying the aquarium. Felt like I did something wrong until I saw your way! And watching you I realize I can use a scotch brite shower scrubber to clean my glass inside instead of that magnetic one. Brilliant! Share more shortcuts please

I liked the video, I wouldnt have thought of the Dawn soap but all my tanks just get windex when I think of it. The thing I hate cleaning the most is the canister filters. I have an FX6(its heavy when full) and an old Fluval 406(it likes to be temperamental and leak around the seal or be difficult on restarting). But I have a heavily planted 135 gal tank and the decaying plant matter along with the fish poo and sails has to be cleaned out of them one way or the other.

I like this video and these hands-on tips! However, I do not agree that the snails add more bio-load to the tank. As long as you do not extra feed them, they only help to break down what you have or add into the tank, anyway. From a biological point of view I would keep them. Thanks for the video!

Pea puffers will decimate those snails and are likely too small for the piranha to care about. Not sure you're ever going to totally starve those snails out as long as there's wood and plants in there. They're probably living off the mulm and bacteria slime as much as they are food and fish waste.

Keep the snails, they are sandsnails! They are great, they eat some algae, eat uneaten food so it wont fail the water and they also bury themselves with will rotate the substrate so no harmfull gases will form and also take the fishwaist with them while burying witch will get closer to the plant root that will take up the nutrients. I keep sandsnails in all my aquariums for this matter.

All I want to say is that it was super satisfying to watch the cyano being siphoned off the red macroalgae. That could be a whole short video and I'd watch it haha

Loved the video, I have a detritus build up issue, how can I fix that besides vacuuming the substrate?

I've been reusing my water for some time, i do a similar thing but i find it easier and more effective to use a really fine filter sock clamped to the inside of a bucket, it catches every scrap of dirt ect and polishes the water and then just lift the sock out and tip the cleaned water back into the tank, and you can use this method for any type of tank from cold water to marine. You don't always need to do water changes if your tank and filtration are well kept.

That's what I do & about the 3rd time I change out 1/2 the tanks
so they get a good major water change 4 X's a year.
