    Simon and Chevy used to work on SNL together and became friends. When Paul made a different video for this song on the SNL set he wasn't happy with it, so Lorne Michaels and Gary Weiss came up with the idea for this video featuring Paul and Chevy. :-) By the way this whole album, Graceland, is so good!
    A few years ago there is a British singer, George Ezra, and he did a video of one of his songs, "Listen to the Man", that has the same feel as this one - every time he goes to sing, Sir Ian McKellan starts lip synching instead. But in George's video he's upset by it and he confronts Sir Ian about it - it's really funny.

      @@Andres64B Funny. I just listened to it yesterday. I came across the CD while spring cleaning and decided to treat myself. The album itself has an anti-apartheid in South Africa message, featuring as it does black S. African artists, especially vocal group Ladysmith Black Mombazo. I once heard tell (dunno if it's true) that the title of this song was based on a conversation at a dinner party Simon had with some luminary who was previously unfamiliar with him or his work. For the whole conversation, the guy kept addressing Paul as Al.. He found this amusing, and so when Simon's wife at the time (he's had 3) joined the conversation, he introduced her to the guy as Betty, so for the rest of the conversation, as far as the guy was concerned, he was chatting with a couple named Al and Betty.

    • @Andres64B
      @Andres64B 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheOnlyAardvark I believe I heard that he got a lot of flak for doing this album. Other artists were boycotting South Africa and he thought that it would be better to do the album so they gave him a lot of shit.

    • @TheOnlyAardvark
      @TheOnlyAardvark 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Andres64B Yup. At the tie there was a big boycott of Sun City Resort on the east coast of SA, where giant concerts by supergroups and such used to take place, by many western bands as a rejection of apartheid. Simon going there and actually recording with S. African artists, thus exposing the black S. African musical genre to the outside world and therefore focussing world attention on the moral depravity of the apartheid system was, I believe, just as effective in ending the system as was the boycott. Two sides of the same coin. There was a single out at the time, I ain't gonna play sun city (can't remember who recorded it, sorry). By way of digression, an earlier record by Labi Siffre, Something Inside So Strong, is an ode to oppression (or against it, I mean) and always reminds me of the worst days of apartheid.

    This song brings back a vivid memory of living in an upstairs apartment, and early one Sunday morning (after me having a late night the night before), the guys living downstairs put this song on really loud.
    Now, I love the song so that was OK, but then they played it a 2nd, 3rd, 6th,... 9th time....it's a long song....
    by the 10th time I had to roll out of bed and go downstairs to ask them to change the song....BUT I still absolutely love it!

    The album this on, "Graceland," is one of my all-time favorites of any artist. Try "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes."

    That's why Paul Simon hung in there for so many years. He'd change things up a little. Plenty of variety in his songs. The Beatles and The Stones did that too.

    That bass solo! The bassist is Bakithi Kumalo, and he only actually played the first half! The second half is the first half played backward!! So cool. It sounds fantastic. I wish it were longer! The background vocals are by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, an incredible vocal group from South Africa. I saw them perform once - unbelievably uplifting. That’s a moment in time I’d go back to if I could!

    Paul was on SNL so often he was almost a regular. I doubt you could find a song you didn’t like by him. One of my favorites is Kodachrome, hope to see you react to it soon!

    Father/Daughter, from The Wild Thornberrys movie. That's one of my favorites by him. It was one of my daughter's favorites and she played that for our father/daughter dance at her wedding.

    This album, Graceland, has so many great songs with so many great lines - "the Mississippi delta was shining like a National guitar" is one that has always stuck with me.
    Not to mention the wonderful music of Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the other South African musicians featured throughout.
    An amazing combination.
