Very well explained madam 🙏🙏 Can you please explain why different songs based on same raga are played in different sthayis. For example Raga Hindolam Samaja vara gamana and Nambi kettavar evarayya are played in different sthayis. Which factor decides the sthayis of the songs 🙏🙏
Scales for different songs are chosen according to their range. Samaja vara gamana moves across the octaves, hence playing it on a scale between D to E is perfect. Nambikettavar is mostly moving in the lower octaves. In order to brighten up the song, you shift the pitch to a G or G# .The range of a song therefore determines where it is played.
Can u explain about string numbers used for veena Many of them are suggesting gauge strings... But from the shop here getting only the set of ellora brand...the numbers are not mentioned .. and also for string 30 and 31 set to shruthi d and e...am literly confused to buy strings . Gauge strings are coming in a roll when i asked the shop keeper. my veena is not having a good sound...am almost changed the shruthi and checked it...but am not satisfied ..if i changed to this gauge strings..will be get good sound? Which string u ll suggest to buy...tell me about this please...
Megha I have given a detailed answer to this question in the comments section of tuning the Saraswathi veena. String nos 29 or 30 are used for the first string. I prefer that you use 30 since it is little thinner and the hands move easily. Ellora is a good brand and please buy the roll and keep. 27 for 2nd string, 22 for third and 20 for 4. Tala strings will be 30 for the first, 31 for 2 and 3.
Hi Aparna. The scale / pitch of a veena is what you fix. You can comfortably tune the veena to the range between d, d# ,e and f. Beyond that, the string will break. But if you want higher pitches like g and g# you must just shift the S.
This was a very exhaustive lesson. Thanks a lot. Also if you can use some pictorial representation it would add even more value and we students can learn it even better
The 7 strings are divided as four playing strings and three drone strings. The playing strings are tuned to B , E ,B ,E starting from the lowest. The drone strings are tuned to E,B,E starting from the lowest.
Very instructive, thank you Ma'am 🙏 please upload many more such videos..

What are all 7 strings tuned to, starting from the lowest pitch?

Can I tune the veena to D or 2 kattai ? Will the strings break ?
No Adithya, at D the string is a lot looser and hence chances of breaking is less
