I’m giving it the ol’ TH-cam try first. There isn’t anything a man knows working a trade, that we can’t learn (mostly cars, roofing, and electricity being the exception), most of it is available to learn at the library or a weekend class somewhere local. It’s not rocket science, it’s just knowledge. So far I’ve replace most of my electrical outlets (didn’t die!), replumbed my house and replaced my water heater. It just takes the right tools and knowledge and a whole bunch of cuss words. I absolutely hate giving someone my money if I have the capability to fix it.

Yeah I can speak from experience I was 22 when I met my ex who was 32 with three small children younger than 5 with two baby mamas. He was all about control. He told me his baby mamas left him because they stopped loving him and changed when they got pregnant. I had low self esteem and was going through a rough time with a family member dying and he preyed on that. I was in an emotionally abusive and mentally abusive relationship. The moment I woke up and started speaking up and saying no to him and having a voice, he said I changed. I wasn’t the woman he met. Because I would say no to giving him all my money and putting his problems and priorities over mines. He wanted me to be broke and not pay any of my bills just his. Couldn’t depend on him for a dime or even to talk to me or see me consistently but he could depend on my stupidity for money, time, etc. I was so happy I saw the light and found my worth. A big problem i see often in relationships is that people consider their partners their "other half" when in reality a relationship should involve two whole, complete individuals coming together to form a partnership, not dependency. Independent- No influence or control by any outside source. Self sufficient- Ability to maintain without outside help. While it can be said that self sufficient means I can do this, if you have a better way for me to do this or want to help me do this it’s fine. Yeah I can speak from experience I was 22 when I met my ex who was 32 with three small children younger than 5 with two baby mamas. He was all about control. He told me his baby mamas left him because they stopped loving him and changed when they got pregnant. I had low self esteem and was going through a rough time with a family member dying and he preyed on that. I was in an emotionally abusive and mentally abusive relationship. The moment I woke up and started speaking up and saying no to him and having a voice, he said I changed. I wasn’t the woman he met. Because I would say no to giving him all my money and putting his problems and priorities over mines. He wanted me to be broke and not pay any of my bills just his. Couldn’t depend on him for a dime or even to talk to me or see me consistently but he could depend on my stupidity for money, time, etc. I was so happy I saw the light and found my worth. It’s not women’s fault our moms should teach us to be independent. Do you know how many women can’t even depend on their own fathers who were made to protect and provide for them. No woman is walking around screaming about how independent she is. He is exaggerating to create a narrative that does not exist. My issue with his verbiage is this: he is deliberately ignoring the incredibly long history of women falling into dependence on a man that then will use that dependence against her. I have seen plenty of women that are, if not financially dependent on a man, then emotionally dependent, be abused by said man. I have heard the gentleman’s argument before so found the definition of both words. Although they do mirror each other there is a difference.
Independent- No influence or control by any outside source.
Self sufficient- Ability to maintain without outside help. So just for the sake of argument it could be said being independent means you don’t need anyone and aren’t willing to listen to anyone regardless of the situation. While it can be said that self sufficient means I can do this, if you have a better way for me to do this or want to help me do this it’s fine. Whether you believe they are one and the same or interchangeable believe it a conversation that should be had.

He taught my sister, my brother and I that we all needed to be self-sufficient adults, regardless of our relationship status, and that it meant that it involved being involved in the housework, the child rearing and the other things that were necessary to having a functioning home and family, even when he was the higher earner in our parents' relationship. He told us, and showed us, that because our mother also worked, it would be unfair of him to expect to do none of the unpaid labour, just because he worked.
