Yes, they can be noisy. It's important to use a mic preamp with a level control. The preamp will convert mic signal to line level and help control noise. I use a Focusrite Clarett+ 4Pre. Any of the Focurite Clarett+ or Scarlett models are good and there are other brands with similar features. Sometimes I also use the Whirlwind Imp 2 direct box, it removes additional hum/noise.
