  • Today I'm taking a look at the brand new (April 19) AK weathering pencils seeing how they work and how they compare to other artist watercolour pencils on the market today. I have no affiliation with Ak Interactive or scalemodelshop.co.uk. I provided all of the materials myself.

    I know this is a year old now but thought I should chip in with a tip, if you want an instant heavier application of colour from the AK pencils, dip the tip of the pencil in water and apply.

    I am a bit of a fan when it comes to AK products so I guess I'm biased but I also like the way they grouped likeminded colors, as you mentioned. Waiting out that collectors box containing all the pencils in the set. Thanks for the quality review!

    Thanks for adding a comparison between them and artists pencils, I was literally about to buy the deluxe set from Amazon!
    I've got 2 huge tins of Cran D' Ache Supracolore Soft and luminance just sitting around so I'm going to give them a try first, I thought the AK Weathering Pencils were oil based like most AK products..

    Good video. AK have a good range of colours and the lighter coloured pencils would be effective on Olive drab or darker coloured subjects. Look forward to using them as an alternate way of detailing and enhancing the model subject.

    Before these came out I used Stabilo 'All' pencils. They are slightly waxy like the AK pencils and also water soluble. The only problem with the Stabilo pencils is the useful (to modellers) colour choice was limited to black, orange and a couple of brown shades.

    • @lpjmodels
      @lpjmodels  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the main benefit of these sets, useful shades. Otherwise it's all personal preference.

      If I remember correctly I didn't pay a lot for a whole tin of the Derwent pencils, and there are a lot of colours in it. Price per pencil was therefore very cheap!

      @@lpjmodels oh Oranges are sweet! I had an AD30 and really enjoyed it but have since went digital via a Line 6 Helix rack with a Friedman FRFR setup. What BKP do you have in the PRS? I have Aftermaths in my Kiesel and they're great for shreddy stuff.

    • @lpjmodels
      @lpjmodels  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I'm a big fan of orange, they have that mid presence that you just need for cutting through the mix when playing metal without the harsher Marshall cut. Jim root had such a great sound with some of the later slipknot stuff, so that was the reason I went for the rocker.
      I'm using a pair of miracle mans (men?) I'd get an American prs but the SE is such a solid guitar for the pricepoint, despite being Korean it's made very well. I had my eyes on a baked maple neck SE with a floyd for a bit more fun. Digital these days is getting crazy good, I dont blame people for switching over, I wouldn't use enough of the features though !
      I need a more dedicated metal guitar but the action and speed of my prs neck is bonkers anyway.

    Great video. I was considering getting some of these but watching your video i think i will stick to oils and pastels and dedicated weathering washes. I may in the future try a couple of the darker ones like streaking grime and dark earth. Like you said they do look a bit too subtle. I mainly do aircraft models and have a few silver and grey watercolour pencils in different makes mainly for chipping. Thanks for sharing.
