Daryl makes some good points.
I call Daryl the inventor, he sees opportunity when one sees adversity
Good points are most important for good brushes!
These openings are my favorite 😂😂😂
I read that as “paints” instead of “points”. Now I want paints by Daryl.
Ninjon: the channel I watch when I need my desired impulse purchases validated
Definitely has become a bit of a shill for products. Most times I watch these videos thinking "wait, is this just an ad?"
Try this for edge highlighting: wet the mini's surface first with a clean brush, just a little. Then use a dry pencil on the edges. This should give you much more control than making the pencil itself wet and all mushy.
so easy for it to mess up + it's more work at that point than using a brush to paint the edge highlights.
I like the ones that come from the lower-back region. So much bend and snap.
Try using a sponge that's got most of the water squeezed out for dampening the lead *just a little* might give you more control for that edge highlighting issue.
i love your tip on the pouches, and small accessories on the models which aren't super important. Your advice about just leaving them the base green color and just adding a dash of highlights before slapping some contrast paints on them is brilliant. what a great time saving tip, when you explained it, it makes so much sense.
Awesome timing. My set of these arrived last week. Turns out you can get a more controlled vibrancy boost from them by warming the tips with a blow dryer. Also once it's all dry you can remove unwanted parts with a good quality pencil eraser.
I’ve been using watercolour pencils like this for quite awhile. Any decent watercolour pencils will do. I will normally give the model a clear matte varnish with an airbrush after I’m done. I’ve also been using mica powders and soft pastels (non oil pastels) to get a similar effect. Great for dry brushing too. I imagine that AK set won’t be cheap, so you can save some money by buying watercolour pencils instead.
Pastels are great in general. Still have an old set of pastel chalks lying around from my school days. Turns out that you can grind them up very easily to get something very similar to pure pigment powders. It's my go-to whenever I need non-standard colors, instead of buying yet another pot of pigment for way too much money.
Thanks for reviewing those pencils. I got the add for them when I got my AK paints and I was curious.
Id like to place an order for the Daryll butt hair brush
i dont even play or paint minis but this is so relaxing to watch, great work!
You should try it out with the cool stuff you've learned from Jon, you might surprise yourself.
Very interesting to watch you test these out. Thanks for another entertaining and informative video and another fantastic paint job. That's a great Salamanders green!
Thanks for the content. I get the feeling your pencils will end up where mine did, on the shelf. There's gotta be a use for them, but so hard to find!
I've been wondering about these for awhile and have almost grabbed the full set a few times.
Based on this, I think I may just grab a couple of the specialized packs (rust, decay, etc) as I'm not sure I could find a use case for many of the colours if they don't actually work for edge highlights.
Kool products and great work. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve heard of these. I’m glad you tested them for me
I loved the bit at 5:30, everybody should know how to exploit underpainting + transparency effects
That was the standout in this video for me, too. I don't know why I never thought about it before, considering I do underpainting on all of my minis, but it's just one of those things that slipped my mind I guess. Do underpainting even during the process, not just during the prep steps, ya dingus! Haha.
Never occurred to me before tbh. I've only been at it since June so I'm always learning!
I have several of the Ak Interactive Weathering Pencils & I have been happy with the results. Very much like pigments but with more control & complements Vallejo's weathering effects.
They're made with grease paint so you should try heating them up, the grease acts a bit like wax or oil so it should soften them and allow the pigment to come off without losing any control
As an aside, the electronic music added to your videos adds to the presentation and enjoyment of watching your videos!
I got some Acrylic paint pens for edge highlighting and they work great. Also use them for eyes and very small detial work.
Brilliant!!! Really great video - Thanks
Loved the video as ever Jon. Love the experimentation!
There's something oddly fascinating about having a more matte finish. Really like this style.
very interesting.. will have to look into this.
Reminds me of Turner acrylic gauche with a bit more drying time :) Super cool find!
Salamanders have black backpacks & shoulder pads! But any video featuring the boys from Nocturne will always be good.
Lovely green though, Karandras Green is superb and great tip on the white airbrush highlights, I'll definitely have to give that a go.
I've tried pouring a bit of nuiln oil into a Gatorade cap , then getting an orange or light brown color pencil, then using a razor to get fine shavings into the nuiln oil mixing it well , then apply it to the modle and it once it dries it leaves a cool rust effect
I learned a lot of new techniques in this one. and that terrain is sooo cool
my local hobby shop got these in and I was thinking about grabbing them. after watching this I will def be adding them to my arsenal
Its, super Epic build time!
a good friend of mine always edge highlight with soft cranions, and there are metalic pencils outhere fantastif for weathering scraches and pretty cheap must add.
Great vid, I'll now see if my old watercolour pencils work like this. Did you go back and varnish after the pencil work?
I love the look of this model. A muted, gritty, realistic look ✨
I love these pencils. There is so much that crosses over hobby wise 😊
I've had good luck using these weathering pencils by shaving some off with a hobby knife and making it into my own thickness by adding some water to the shavings.
Nice! I have a few but have yet to try them out. I guess I'll have to now :)
That intro made me laugh out loud. My favorite one thus far!
Darrel Brushes. When you need to shotgun blast paint at a model, we'll pepper your stipple like no other
Ak interactive is solid across the board, I’ve been loving their metallic miniature paint, great coverage without feeling goopy.
Great vid, man
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
Yep, I really like these pencils for weathering.
Take my money now! I am ready for the full Daryl Hair Brush Kickstarter! What add-ons do you think there will be??? Daryl Left-Overs Wet Palettes? Not-Crown Royal Dice Bags??
Always fun to see a Salamander being painted by TH-camrs I follow. I love the result. Vulkan lives!
Great video. I’ve had these pencils kicking around for yonks ( painting Bolt Action stuff ) but didn’t even consider them for 40k. 😊👍
Following along, it came the idea to add isopropanol to the water. Maybe it mimics the behavior of oilwashes and gives some more opportunities in the recesses
Excellent and enjoyable video, thanks for posting! Is that what a melta gun looks like these days? It looks like what I used to associate as a flamer.... It ended up looking great, I'll use some of the tips for sure. That base-coating concept actually blew my mind after 30 years of painting, thanks for that.
No it’s a Primaris Flamer
Id be interested to see you use these pencils more. Thanks for the video
Super fast build mode!
We used regular color pencils on our models ~30 years ago for streaking and weathering. Glad its making the jump to 40k i guess
Even if I wasn’t interested in the subject matter, I’d still watch all your videos just to track the progress of that STUNNING ink! ❤
Darryl has great guide hair brushes lol, great test model vid! cheers
Can't believe you did all this without sharpening the pencils! Never mock Darrel again😂
Have you tried the the AK liquid pigments? I haven't found much info about them, would be great to see a video on them
I had no idea AK came out with these pencils. I've used sargent art watercolor pencils for a few years for weathering. As you mentioend edge highlighting, I grabbed them and gave them a try, WOW. You opened my eyes to so many more uses. To be honest though, the sargent art pencils seem much softer than the ones you're using from AK. they are also super inexpensive, so you might pick some up and try them out. It was my wife who had them and saw me struggling to get weathering pigments in tight areas and suggested I try her pencils out. I haven't turned back since.
Loved these pencils started using them as a cheat for certain stuff about 18 months ago works great
I’ve used prismacolor pencils for a while on models. Using alcohol with them once they are on the model allows you to spread them like paint.
Also…you can easily sharpen these pencils and the ones you are using to a fine point for more fine control.
Your new ink is looking sick 🤟
I dip the pencil in water then use a small brush to rub the colour before using it on the model for detail chips etc. If I’m doing streaks at a mech leg joint i will use the wet pencil direct onto the model then damp brush to get desired results.
Dude you always deliver!! I was thinking "i dont see the point of those pens..." and then you started chipping and weathering and...voila!!
Brilliant thanks for sharing this is a game changer
YES!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH
Props for using a Will Pattison clip, Jon! 👍
Mezgike made a video called how to paint Bloodaxe Warboss. He uses pencil's on the edges. You should watch his video on his technique... he understands it very well.
Seems like a nice and niche product.
Btw. A similar pop up terrain as the sponsor, called UpZone seems to be doing a version 2.0 of their stuff early next year.
Both intrigue me. But make sure you get a set that has "half size" boards so you can build in diagonals. Otherwise you will get many open areas that will help shooty armies
Awesome video Jon. I still think you should give water soluble oil paint (like duo aqua) a try, and make for a video topic. Something about this reminded me of that product (ability to mix acrylics and oils?), and I so badly want to know your thoughts.
Thank you Darryl. You've inspired me to shave my ragdoll cat. Dry brushes for days!
Cool experiment! Daryl needs to come back very soon! Thanks for making me laugh! 😂
You can use them for color filters by putting them on dry then using some water to activate the color.
Did you try heating the pencils before using them for edge highlights? I have a feeling that would soften the grease enough for it to go on better without losing control.
Nice tips, nice tunes.
Hearing JENOVA sounds over 40k painting as Jon is inevitably gonna convince me to get new tools. This is some nuclear explosion of childhood and hobbies.
@Ninjon for doing the edge highlights try moistening the pencil lead - this should make it work a bit like a paint and also stop the chalky flaking.
Edit: Yes, yes you did try that.
What do they look like if you varnish over them? Thanks for a great video.
I use them for highlights on stuff on the base like stone etc. Just like a more controlled drybrush. Jose Davinci showed this in one of his videos.
I wonder if you might get more detail/control if you sharpened them first? I know a lot of art pencils come with that snub tip because a sharpened tip will break during shipping. Might be worth trying. Or I can get some pencils of my own and try it, obviously. Great video!
I was practically screaming for him to sharpen the damn pencil....
I do doll repainting so using watercolour pencils is normal to me - but to get them to stick well you need a good surface, we swear by Mister Super Clear matte fixative, or Windsor or Newton spray fixative, then you can use water to activate, or paint directly from the pencil,
The outro should have been painting a space marine with the Daryl hair brush!!
Watercolor pencils are great for weathering and streaking. If you want ones for edge highlighting, prismacolor are the ones you want. They are higher pigment and softer. Crayola are semi ok for doing paterns like checks, strips, etc. Even some fine symbols. But the prisma color exel.
You need a long point pencil sharpener to give you a super fine point you were looking for. And all pencils usually leave the blunt end when shipping to protect the pencil from damage over shipping. Once you have used the fine tip to do those edge details then you can use the pencil to do the rest. Also if you want ir need to you can use your brush on the pencil tip to get concentrated amount on the brush to do other detailing. Coloring bliss has a good example of working with inktense ink based pencils that shows these techniques. I am pleasantly surprised to be able to share this with you while I am waiting for my paints and brushes to come in from Amazon so I can start my very first mini. I am so excited.
Also yes wet tip will give intense color. Forgot that from the above statement. If you need to resharpen after wet you would need for it to dry before doing it. You might be able to dry out the lead faster with hairdryer or heat gun... but that may take some practice so you don't damage the lead.
For me enamel rust always worked best, but i have to admit these pencils tempt me a lot, because working with oil thinners is so annoying. Brushes are tough to clean, it doesn't smell that great, the medium/thinner vaporizes adter a while..
Doing this with the pencils and water seems like a great alternative!
Oil Paints and odorless thinner
Man the jams in this video slap! The one at 4:55 sounds a like a redux from FF7. Great video sir!
Thank you
Hey Jon, Have you ever tried a limited color Zorn Palette for a miniature? Theres a great video from Jess Karp on the method and style.
@Ninjon What do you use over the necro gold on the acquilla? It looks great!
Curious to know if there's any difference between these and watercolor pencils. They are also water soluble and can be worked with a brush.
That Terrain got backed instantly. This is going to make setting up a decent table on the fly so much easier.
What’s the shelf you put the mini into at the end called?
And great vid 👌
these seem great for rust dirt and water streaks
What if you sharpened the tip and then wet it, would you be able to use the side to edge highlight?
These make me think a lot about the techniques popular in the doll repainting community, as water colour pencils are a major part of the process for a lot of customisers. I wonder if there are any other materials popular in that craft which would translate well to use in mini painting, maybe chalk pastels/pan pastels might be something to try out. I feel like they'd be similar to weathering powders but have such a range of colours options they could be used for all sorts!
Hey I dunno if you are going for this but I remember you mentioned something about it in some podcasts years ago, so I just thought I would let you know your looking really healthy and fit mate must be feeling good keep it up love your videos so anything that keeps you healthy and making them keeps me happy lol
Edge highlighting works great with pencils if you use either proper watercolour pencils or oil based pencils. You can even use graphite pencils for metals. I use it to edge highlight black armour.
It also depends on the color and whatever pigment they use in the pencils. I've noticed texture and consistency differences in the same lines. I think it just takes time to find the right ones for what you need.
@@ChronicBronchitis-mz2vn Never personally noticed an issue. But to be fair, I already had artist-grade watercolour and oil pencils that are more expensive and have better pigment transfer than the type you'd pickup form most stores. So maybe its the quality of the pencils I use.
Bit of a noob question, but do you have to seal them with something after? Especially graphite, I imagine the dust is just sitting on the model if you don't coat it with something?
@@northerncatto Yeah, you do need to seal any of them or it'll just rub right off.
My man is watching Jim Davis while painting minis, I'm here for it.
Would sharpening the pencil to a fine point and adding some water make them work better for edge highlighting?
Would it help to sharpen the pencils for better control?
heres a tip. sharpen them. get a pencil sharpener.. they will make the tip 10000% finer and you can REALLY use em.
Ninjon: can I ask you about your wall displays that appear at the very end of the video? Are those custom or readily available for purchase? Thank you sir!
You should look into chalk and pastels. Also love the music!
