  • Architects who do this are wasting their time and experiencing disappointment.
Normally, architects think they have to offer as many ideas as possible for free in order to build trust and close the deal. But in truth, giving your prospect more ideas extends the time they need to “think about” the project and causes the prospect to devalue your work. Maybe you’ve experienced this.
You schedule a consultation with a client. They ask you to visit their site and offer ideas to consider. You drive an hour to get there and they show up late. They love your ideas, but you never hear from them again. If you do, you find out they’ve chosen a cheaper firm because they already have your great insights to work from. Now they just need a glorified draftsperson to execute them.
Drafting is a low-cost commodity, and you’re not in business to do drafting. Clients pay for your ideas. Don’t give them away for free.
