Adventures in Spain No4. Sad Hill Cemetery.

- In 1966 the Dollar Westerns were riding high. Sergio Leone was asked to make another, more expensive film and so came The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
Probably the greatest scene in that film was the finale as Tuco, Angel Eyes and Blondie fight it out for the gold in the grave of the Unknown Soldier.
A location near Burgos in Spain was chosen and the cemetery created with the help of the Spanish Army.
In a nearby valley there is also the stockade of the Prison Camp, sadly just a scar on the ground now. The cemetery was reborn as recently as 2017 by an association of fans from the area. Many of who’s grandparents were extras in the film.
Santo Domingo de Solos is the nearest village being just 15 minutes away. We stayed here and spent a very hot afternoon hanging ourselves!

Yes great scene. I rewatch it all the time . Great to see it recreated. Would like to go there myself one day.
While we were there a group of 4 people turned up, two couples, all the gear on, ponchos, chaps, guns, hats etc and a fair sized video camera! All in their 50s I’d guess. When we left they were practising their “Quick Draw” scene by the car park. Fair play to them.
These scenes are as sad as the music...but mysteriously revive your soul.

surprised it is well protected, taken care of. i love places that are maintained and kept looking the same way for so long (ghost towns for example). if a place is beautiful, maintain it as it is and never change it. good example here. loved the movie.
It wasn’t! Thanks to a group of enthusiasts who found it and spent ages restoring it, it is now.
There is a Netflix documentary about it. Just search Sad Hill and you’ll find it.

¡ realize that so much westerns were filmed on almeria’s desert but who knows if postured or adapted..,
Sí amigo, realmente existe, pero también sí, solo era un plató de cine. Entra en Netflix y busca “Cerro Triste” y encontrarás un documental increíble sobre un grupo de aficionados de la zona de Burgos que encontraron la historia de su construcción por los soldados españoles y su posterior abandono, su hallazgo, cubierto de maleza y abandonado y cómo trabajaron para restaurarlo.
I was there recently.and found it very disappointing. Due to my Spanish patriots that have no respect for public areas or scenery. And love to vandalismo with wrighting (so and so was here), sit on Cross to have photo taken... apart from animal shit and I imagen animals rubbing against the crosses and breaking them.
