18:04 My guess is he was homeless in the beginning because he had a gambling addiction, and lost everything betting on a game of pool.

Pool at the time was often considered seedy because gambling could be involved and went hand in hand with Dive bars and the very proper sensibilities of the 40's considered gambling and by extension pool as one of the many tools of the devil.

In a twist that united two worlds, Solid Snake, the legendary soldier, was given a mission unlike any he’d had before. Somewhere far from his usual battlefields, a disturbing figure known as the Coachman had been wreaking havoc, exploiting and enslaving young boys, using Pleasure Island to turn them into mindless donkeys. Word of this sick scheme reached Snake, who had no tolerance for such cruelty.
Snake infiltrated Pleasure Island at night, blending with the shadows, his usual weaponry adapted to deal with an enemy far more sinister than the soldiers he was used to facing. This Coachman, Snake had heard, had an almost supernatural ability to transform these children into beasts, feeding off their innocence and mischief. But Snake’s resolve was unwavering; he knew he had to bring an end to this.
As he navigated the dark corners of the island, Snake noticed the cages filled with terrified donkey-children, their pleading eyes looking for hope. His stomach tightened, but he stayed focused. Moving stealthily, he reached the Coachman’s den, where the grinning fiend sat, counting coins and laughing at the suffering he’d inflicted. The twisted laughter echoed across the walls.
Snake stepped forward, revealing himself. The Coachman sneered, unafraid, mocking Snake and telling him he could have him caged and sold by morning. But Snake was ready. With a voice like steel, he warned the Coachman, "Your time's up. This ends tonight."
The fight was fierce. The Coachman tried to summon dark magic and enchantments, but Snake dodged each attack, moving with precise skill. He used his tranquilizer gun to keep the Coachman from transforming, weakening him. With each step, Snake's fists and CQC moves pummeled the once-confident fiend, who quickly realized he was no match for a trained soldier.
Finally, beaten and cornered, the Coachman begged for mercy, but Snake was relentless. “For the lives you destroyed,” he said, “this is justice.” He hauled the Coachman into one of his own cages, locking him in. Before leaving, Snake gathered the children, found a way to reverse the spells, and brought them to safety.
As dawn broke, Snake walked away from the island, leaving the Coachman to experience the torment he had inflicted.

Haven't you seen The Music Man? They were talking about trouble with a capital T and that rhymes with P and that stands for pool.
I guess back then, pool was the game often played by lowlifes and reprobates, so while there's nothing inherently wrong with the game itself, it became associated with seedy living based on whom it was popular with.

The 1978 version is the most accurate.

The absolute weirdness of what society found terrible in the 1940s is hilarious. Acting, pool, dating, drinking...

Another change that helps this movie a lot is Pinocchio himself is changed to be a lot more likable.
That same little monster in the beginning who almost got his father arrested for child abuse and then proceeded to laugh in his face about it? Yeah. That’s who the book wanted you to side with.
