The worst part of losing local multiplayer _now_ is that screens are big enough four people can have the equivalent of a full SD screen in a quarter of an HD screen, and with wireless controllers you don't have to huddle close to the console or buy any adapters.
actually 1/4 of 1080p is 720p, so everbody gets there own little hd screen.
Also developers would probably make vertical splitscreen breaks a la modern Mario Kart, instead of horizontal ones.

The issue with split-screen for me is I get distracted by the mix of sound and the other views in my peripheral vision.
Last game I played like that was Forza and my friend picked a louder car, I didn't even know whether I was pushing the throttle.

It gets easier with practice and preparation. If you have a dedicated table with a bunch of power strips and a good network switch, it can be set up in under half an hour. Less if people are actually helping you. There are also places like Omega Station in Chicago popping up (if you live in a city) for playing LAN setups with friends if you have the money.
Lan parties are easy and fun as hell. One banquet table can hold up to 4 people on pc

You know what i find odd about the lack of splitscreen these days? These days, basically everyone has at the very least a 32'-45' TV on their living room that they use to play their consoles, which makes the screen size for each player reasonable enough to use (unlike on the ps1-N64 era when we had fucking 17' screens)...SO WHY THE HELL DO WE NOT HAVE LOCAL MULTI? IT'S NOT EVEN THAT HARD TO IMPLEMENT, GOD DAMN IT

Well, it can be a moderate challenge to implement. Games are designed to fully utilize that hardware they're running on. The game needs to incorporate the ability to automatically adjust its frame rate (or better, adjust texture fidelity and lighting) to accommodate three more full camera views being rendered.
Add in that SS isn't a great selling feature for AAA games (but an excellent one for smaller indie games or for family-use consoles like the Wii) and it does need to get factored into a cost/value analysis.
Because it makes games run like shit when you try to run four different instances of the same game. Theres too much going on.

So many nights spent staying up late to kick each other’s asses in Smash Bros. or Halo, or anything else we had lying around with four controllers to spare, some that we brought over ourselves, and me or one of our friends serving up a hot meal that we split. Sometimes we’d go out to a local Wawa or restaurant that still runs late at night for whatever we’re craving.... but damn. I miss those nights. It’s certainly the best feeling ever. Online only can never compare. And that’s why the phrase speaks to me.

My older brother and his friends kind of solved this issue with online gaming. Sometimes they meet up at someone's house, order pizza and everyone brings their laptops so that they can play Dota 2 together at the same place and time, sometimes they also bring a ps4 to play overcooked and Resident Evil 7.

That bit about not maybe not playing Resident Evil 5 with your little brother was especially funny to me, because my older brother and I used to play it incessantly. It was one of the definitive games that brought us closer together.
Nintendo is really great at local multiplayer. Even games like Odyssey or the Galaxy games, which seen like single player experiences, have a 2nd player option. Granted, it's not like another player, but it can be great if a little sibling is watching you play and just wants to help out. Most companies wouldn't even think of putting this in, yet here Nintendo is. I spent hours and hours playing Galaxy 2 while my younger sister helped me collect star bits and coins and 1-ups. It was tons of fun and we still both have fond memories of it

Titanfall 2 is my Favorite modern FPS I just wish I could've played splitscreen with friends. None of my friends own the game, so having mech battles with 4 friends and flying around shooting eachother would've awesome. The new PVE mode would've been perfect for it too. Unfortunately EA bought Respawn Entertainment, so there's zero chance of it happening now.

Respawn actually goes against EA alot. After EA heard that Respawn wanted to give away all DLC for free and get rid of loot boxes and give players a service that is good, they decided to fuck over Respawn and release it in between Infinite Warfare and Battlefield 1.

MassiveGat - Gaming actually EA wanted to directly compete against COD and was hoping to get COD players to choose Titanfall over that years COD. In their eyes they thought they could fight against the biggest shooter to come out in recent years but it was just wishful thinking. I could see where they were coming from but honestly they should’ve just waited till later to release it, just EA being dipshits as usual.
I remember getting halo 5 solely because of the split screen and being both surprised and angry to see that it didn’t. It never crossed my mind to check and see if it had split screen.
In your defense, they actually said on Twitter there was going to be splitscreen before the game released.
My Parents divorced a few years after I was born, so I saw my dad on weekends so what we used to do was sit on his sofa in front of a tube tv on a coffee table with a ps2. My dad would order pizza and we would stay up on Friday nights playing split screen timesplitters 2 or we would fight each other on fight night round 2 or we would play Lego Star Wars. This video reignited those memories that I will never forget about my childhood. Thanks Jakey.

I still make my friends play the game with me, and all the other Nintendo 64 games. Gaming is ageless.
When my friends and I would play the checker board chase minigame in Kirby 64, we thought that when the characters slam the ground it looked like bowing, so when we would shout "SACRIFICE!" at each other when attacking. Today we still play n64 and gamecube games when we hang out together, local multiplayer is still a ton of fun.

Playing with your friend sitting beside you is still the best experience. I remember playing Nioh and Dark Soul with my friends , when we die we pass the controller to someone else , and hell, we even play Knack 2 because of the multiplayer, even though the game sucks (sorry Dunkey lol)

Just this week my siblings and I have been playing Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, and Star Fox 64 3D together and there’s nothing else quite as magical as the time we’re spending together. Nintendo really is the GOAT for keeping couch multiplayer alive.

I still don't understand how you could release a Halo game without split screen. A HALO GAME WITHOUT SPLIT SCREEN.
It really was a dealbreaker for me. As someone who only got into Halo because my friends were all into Halo, my very first experiences with the series were just playing splitscreen with them. I wasn't read up on the lore or anything; all I really knew is that I sucked at the game, but it was fun with friends.
Halo 5 wound up being my entry point into the series, and into the Xbox line in general; I bought the special edition Xbox and everything. As someone who barely knew a thing about Halo and didn't do any research about 5, I assumed should be able to pick it up and play it. The campaign confused me, but at least it ultimately gave me enough experience to actually be able to hold a candle to my friends in multiplayer. But then, that was when I found out: No splitscreen. I thought it was just buried under a menu or something. Nope. No splitscreen.
I was so disappointed that I never played Halo 5 again. Not in the three years since I first bought it. Never touched the multiplayer once; I didn't want to get stomped by randos who were more experienced than me (I'd rather get stomped by friends), I wasn't too keen on paying a subscription having come from PC multiplayer, and the req packs always seemed fishy to me (and now more than ever, since that the lootbox craze came and died an excruciating death). Being able to play the latest Halo game in splitscreen with my friends was why I got an Xbox One and Halo 5. And I found out all too late that was completely sidelined for things I ultimately really didn't care about.
These days, when we get together, we'll boot up MCC for our Halo fix; we mostly play Ragnarok in 4, but we also sometimes play 3, or even CE and 2 AE. I also picked up MCC on Boxing Day in 2016, for a pretty neat price of $40; I've been procrastinating on it, but my goal is to play through all four campaigns so that I'll finally be up to speed on the lore. But none of us have touched Halo 5 in a long time.
This was so well timed. I just got an Xbox one, and I got battlefront II and overwatch. I wanted to have some wholesome, face-punching fun with my brother, but nope. Online multiplayer only. Yeah, battlefront II has arcade, but you don't earn credits as fast and it's not really as fun. I wish more games incorporated couch multiplayer. Thanks Jakey.

Around 1 year ago I still gathered a few friends from childhood for a good ENTIRE night of beer, chips and Smash Bros (or Mario Kart, Bomberman etc.).

This is a topic I was sorely hoping to be discussed and who other than Jakey. My fondest memories of gaming were playing Tony Hawks Underground 2 on splitscreen and just messing around after school or during a sleepover. And it has pretty much disappeared completely from the industry. And that's bullshit. I really hate the direction the industry has taken as of late. We need more splitscreen games. If you really want a good splitscreen experience on your PS4 or Xbox One I would highly suggest getting Borderlands The Handsome Collection. It comes with all DLC characters which are awesome, all DLC which is the best DLC content I have ever played, and any special edition content that only preorder players could get. Also it does support 4 player splitscreen. I get a couple of friends together and we just play through these games. Seriously you should get it.
Every 31st of December, me and my stinky friends get together in my house (like 6 of us) and have little tournaments in Mortal Kombat, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, Need for Speed Carbon... We literally drink about 10 liters of Cola and eat an enormous amount of low quality chips and we never have regretted it!
And as the games evolve so do we! First we played that good old MK3 on SNES then we evolved to playing MKKE (that's MK9 if anyone's confused) on XBOX360 and for the last few years we have been playing MKX on PC.
I can't even remember all the stuff we yelled at each other, but I remember my friend Ivan yelled "Stop spamming!" and threw a beer into a mirror... Fun times...

Halo 5 ripped my heart out. My older brother and I had beaten every halo besides 4 together on legendary. I had told him how fun the online was for 5 and we decided to wait to start the campaign until after he got off deployment and got home. And beep bop bippity fucking boop NO SPLIT SCREEN. We honestly haven't been so disappointed in a long looong time. Fuck games today and FUCK 343.

This happened because parents stopped telling little Timmy "get the hell out of my house and don't come back until dinner time". I weep for the kids of today who won't know what it's like going to Blake's house around the corner to play Halo until his mom got sick of us, so we all went to Bryce's house down the street to play Smash Bros. until his mom did the same thing, where we then went to some random as park and played Pokemon until one of our mom's came looking for us and yelled at us to get home.

Kirby Air Ride, I remember playing hide and seek with my sister in city trial mode. Mario Party, I remember destroying my dad's dreams of victory by mere seconds on Goomba Boardwalk. Kirby Return to Dream Land, I remember turning to stone while throwing my friends and family at Magolor. Wii Sports; Baseball, I remember seeing the look on my sister's face whenever I used the B button to throw the ball too low and not telling her. Wii Sports Resort, plane dogfighting with my family. Wii Sports Resort; Fencing, I remember us all laughing at how terrible we were at swordplay. Mario Kart Double Dash, the game who's kart share mechanic helped me bond with my dad after his stroke.

I remember playing through Halo CE, 2, 3, reach and 4 in splitscreen with ma boy. When we saw the first trailer we were preped to suit up and shoot some covie scum together once more. Then we heard. The tragedy. The horror. No split screen. Our sorrow imesurable. Our pain unfathomable. Our rage unthinkable. Truly tis the end of an era.

Just did an 8 player system link game party of Black Ops 2 on 2x Xbox 360s, Xbox One and Xbox Series X. So glad that this is still possible via backwards compatibility. No gaming experience can come close to a good old LAN party.
Sidenote: don't only make more split screen games, but also 4 player Splitscreen on one console with System Link.

Our video game parties eventually turned into Dungeons and Dragons parties. That way we still got to hang out in person and enjoy pizza, games, soda, and a bonfire together before hitting the hay on old mattresses or couches in the hallway. Heck, my Mom loved it and supported us because that meant more hands for quick chores before we can have dinner! haha
Back in the day there was another reason to buy multiple consoles and multiple copies of the game, and that was System Link (LAN)
