Once, it was like 3:30 AM, and I was like 9 (originally 7, as comments will say). I thought I saw my dog Deagle in the kitchen, so I went over to pet him, because I *friggen love* dogs! As I got closer though, I saw the dog-like figure stand up... on 2 legs... I grabbed a dish towel, swung at it, and ran with the towel back to my room. The next morning I thought it was a dream, but the dish towel was still next to me on my bed. No one believed me.
EDIT: I wasn't hiking, but it was still creepy AF
EDIT 2: My most liked and replied-to comment is about a scary thing that happened when I was 9 😂
    To clear some things up-
    • I was up late because I woke up and had to use the bathroom. I was in an apartment at the time and had to walk past the kitchen entrance to get to the hallway bathroom (there wasn't one in my room)
    • I didn't go to sleep right away. I was awake for an hour or so after trying to figure out what the heck that thing was
    • I wasn't 7, I was actually 9, close to being 10, which supposed you guy's dream/nightmare theory because;
    • My dog Deagle had been dead since the middle of 4th grade, and this was near the summer
    • The only reason I fell asleep again was because I was (and still am) an insomniac, and hadn't gotten very much sleep for a while
    • I don't think it could have been sleep paralysis, because I could move fine
    • The animals, it couldn't have been any of them. At the time, I lived in a gated condominium, and was on the 3rd floor
    • Yes, dogs can stand on 2 feet, but the thing was taller than either of my parents standing from the spot where my dog was 2 seconds ago
    • And please, I was 9, and had no clue what this thing was or how it got in. I was more concerned about my parents getting mad that I locked my door, so I didn't. Dish towel was the best weapon I had (and the only one within reach)
I still can't explain what it was, and no one ever believed me

Agreed. I watch a lot of videos about camping, bushcraft, that kind of stuff.
There's one particular channel I watch, forgot the name now, but he does a lot of "urban camping" which is like camping out in public parks and usually illegal. Dude isn't homeless or anything, just loves the thrill, but also knows he really needs to keep himself well-hidden and usually only stays one night.
These guys in the story were probably homeless and used whatever materials they had on hand to build their camp (probably unable to buy/steal a proper tent) and abandoned it when they knew they had been found out.

2:50 they were probably standing on an unmarked grave of a child..... "I'm over here".... Sometimes people dont make that connection. Everywhere we walk, there's most likely a dead body a few feet under, think about it. All the unmarked graves in this world mixed with how many wars we've had, how many children died so quickly from illness, or missing children. Probably followed them back to camp too. It's sad, but spirits are real.

As a thirteen year old lad I would deliver newspapers in the local area but on a Saturday and Sunday I was hired to go into the paper shop with another lad and the manager at 5 in the morning to put the weekend magazines inside the papers.
One morning I woke up and got changed into my clothes and reflective gear and walk outside my house to see a woman across the road from me two doors down standing outside her house crying profusely, I ask if she is OK and she says she's fine and nods at me so I proceed to walk to work.
About 3 hours later I'm finished and am walking home and I pass the house again, the same woman in the same spot still crying my mum goes to get her help and phones an ambulance for her and when it arrives we find out that the house she is standing outside is her old home and she was extremely and she had tried to burn it down and hurt residents on many occasions and that she had a escaped from a local psychiatric ward the day before.
I still remember the way my stomach dropped when I saw her still stood there unmoving and the thought that this unstable lady could have been stood there plotting when I walked past.

Not a hiker, but I used to walk to a huge ‘camp ground’ that is by a huge beautiful river that was in back roads in my little home town. Now my dogs usually follow me in my little adventures, one night I was on one of my little adventures and 2 out of my three dogs were following me. I was chilling by the river while my dogs played with each other behind me in the bushes and tall grass. When it all of a sudden went silent behind me. I thought maybe it was a bear or coyote, but my dogs came out of the grass, almost crawling, they weren’t injured, just scared. Now seeing that scared me shitless because my dogs are hunting dogs, my dogs have dealt with aggressive mountain bears and huge moose and big cats and never have they reacted like that. I quickly grabbed my dogs collars and dragged them away from that spot, they were so scared that they were frozen from fear. I took a short cut home, they only started to ease up when we entered my front yard.

I always walk with my my friend, and we were just walking and talking when I get a strange feeling, I stop and pretty much push him and myself over the hedges to hide. Through the hedges we see two massive dogs trot by, they looked like pit bulls or something, not sure, it was dark, but when they pass we high tail it back to my house and he stays the night. A few weeks later stories popped up about some rabid dogs attacking a homeless person. Not sure if they were connected but it freaked me out.

One in college me and a couple friends went to smoke outside since smoking in the dorms was not allowed. It was about 1am and it looked oddly bright for 1am mind you this was a college in the country and it’s usually pitch black around this time but there was no clouds and it was a full moon and it was beautiful. We were wrapping up our smoke session and I was just chilling on the ground when I heard this blood curdling scream/crying sound from the corn field across the street😳🌚 okay... I mentioned it to my friends but they said they didn’t hear anything, okay maybe I’m just tweaking, I hear it again. Alright ik you guys heard that, they still insisted that don’t hear anything and it’s just me being high😐 okay. I told myself if I hear it again I’m just going to run because this is how people getting eaten in movies. I heard it again but it was louder like it was closer oh hell nah I book it up the hill, my friends are confused on why I’m running and they hear it a fourth time but it’s really loud I almost pissed myself. They they start running it sounded like it was coming into the dorm aw shit I don’t have a key to my friends dorm since it the closest. Well finally they catch up to me and she opens the door. My friend is crying because her boyfriend left her because she wanted to wait till the last second to run. That's somewhat similar to the time I was at JobCorp.
Instead it was around 2am to 2:30am and it was 12 dudes all getting high behind the dorm, pretty far into the woods by an old road that led around campus.
(The females were upstairs so we couldn't get them to come out without getting past the staff)
Campus was surrounded by dense woods and farmland.
You had to use a car to get there because it only had one road that led into campus.
There was an old dirt road but it only circled the grounds, and staff used it as a way to patrol the outskirts of campus at night.
We were all chilling in the woods a bit away from the dorm smoking, passing 2 blunts that we had in rotation, all of a sudden we hear some heavy crackling bushes and twigs.
We all stop talking and moving around because we thought someone had told the night watch or something, and that it was just the staff coming to get us.
So we stayed quiet, waiting for them to call us out.
Nothing happened for about 5 minutes when we hear more noises like multiple footsteps coming up in the same direction, as if there was more than one person or thing watching our dumbasses.
We still sit there like morons when all of a sudden we hear this noise that sounded like a high pitch ringing, it went from something that wasn't much of a bother, to this loud ear piercing screech.
About 30 seconds into this a security car comes driving by the dirt road that we were not that far from, the noise stops and everyone ducks to avoid the light, it still shined enough to where we could see our surroundings and sure enough, nothing was around us.
      No animals, no people, nothing.
Just me and the 12 other idiots getting high.
Next thing we know the branches start crackling and these things started to move really fast away from us without even getting a running start.
At that point we were freaking the fuck out, and all booked it back to the dorm as fast as we could, we looked back every once in awhile just to make sure no one was following us and again, nothing was there.
We decided we had enough of that and all agreed we should just head inside.
So we climbed back through our windows and never went into that patch of woods for the rest of our terms there.
Keep in mind that the JobCorp we were at was ghetto as hell, and the group I was with were Gangster types, I'm talking straight off the streets, just got out of jail, drug hustling dudes who were trying to make a better life for themselves.
Kinda trippy when guys who have been to jail for assault and a few who have actually been to prison were scared shitless of something we couldn't explain.
I'm telling you that campus was haunted or something because a lot of strange happenings were going on there at night.
Especially in one of the abandoned dorms where a few students comitted suicide, there would be lights and figures in the windows.
Sometimes you could hear screaming and crying at night from those vacant dorms or from the woods.
The thing is, you couldn't even get into them without making a lot of noise, or making it noticable.
I was the one who helped barricade those windows and doors by securing them with some 2X4's, left over boards that were nearly 2 inches thick and plywood that was nearly the same.
There was no way in or out of those dorms without struggling to break down the barricades or entering through the front door which was big, and heavy as hell.
It also was locked in place by bolts that needed a key.
      That place was crazy.
But I still had a good time.

Me, my sister, her boyfriend, my two nephews, and my brother were all hiking in the woods about a hour away from our homes.
We were pretty deep in the woods and everything was going as usual and it was really beautiful but very hot.
We were deciding to head back to our car when all of a sudden we hear a young girl scream for her life like she screamed as if she was dying and my sister boyfriend sprinted towards the scream and we did as the same.
There was a huge dam in the middle of the woods with many marks of chalk on it and it was children drawings.
He told us to stay up on the top as he starts to slide down the dam to take a look.
We found nothing but I swear to you I could have heard someone following us as we left.

    I have three stories:
1.It was probably December 26th -27th , 2011 or 2012 - it was around 10-11:30pm. Me and my family were on our way home after a party at my friend's house.
We walk down the street, and in the distance, behind the blocks of flats, suddenly a bright orange-red light starts shining. At first we thought it was a plane, Helicopter or a Chinese lantern - but at some point the object stopped suddenly in the air, stood there for a while, then suddenly started to fly diagonally upwards and after a while disappeared behind the clouds. To this day, I don't know, what it was.
    2. It was in Vysowa, Poland - together with my mother, I was hiking to the top of the mountain, where the old, still functioning Orthodox church was located. We are not far from the church, when suddenly I see a figure in front of me - Whole in white (it looks like as if she/he/it was made of white) - I could describe this figure like this: Totally white, no outlines of any facial features, and the outline itself looked a bit like it was wearing a robe.
The figure passed right in front of my nose, and then disappeared behind the tree. As I am skeptical, at first I decided that I was simply tired of climbing and had hallucinations... Until I reached the top of the mountain, the church. There was a plaque there with information about the church. And what was on the plaque send shivers down my spine:
It turns out that the church was built in 1927 after one boy from this area experienced an revelation(or something like that). I'm not a very religious myself, but it was really...weird.
3.I was on a bike trip, again with my mother - we were near the lagoon, not too far from my home. we rest at a bus stop near the lagoon, when at some point something pushed me to look at the sky, just above the lagoon.
And there, about 50-100 meters from us, in the air, about 50-100 meters above us, a dark grey sphere is floating. It looked like a sphere made out from some strange metal, its diameter was about 3-5 meters.I thought I was hallucinating from exhaustion again, but after a while I noticed that my mother also saw this shit.... But she noticed it at the last moment before it disappeared. I was looking at it for a long time and I noticed something she didn't notice - I noticed that there was a kind of weakly visible force field (I can only describe it in this way) around this ball, dark green in color. If I had to describe this whole field somehow... You saw the "Stargate" and how the portal waved like water when it was turned on? So it was similar here - only that in this case the field resembled a ball around a smaller ball

My moms story; in the 90’s (not quiet sure what year exactly) she was living with my uncles in his apartment temporarily since she had just moved to the US (My uncle lived in those really tall apartments in Los Angeles with those high concrete balconies) anyway My uncle lived in the middle of the floors so he was pretty high up. There was this single mom with two daughters, one was a toddler about two years old and the other was a little older who lived in the floors above. The woman would often come down to visit to one of her friends that lived on same floor as my mom and uncle, it seemed like she wouldn’t really take care of her children, my mom said that she would often see the pair in just diapers and walked around barefooted and they would always leave the apartment and would walk around the hallway. My mom would leave the door to the apartment open to keep an eye on them because their mother wouldn’t even notice when they would leave the apartment. One night my mom woke up to someone screaming and crying hysterically coming from outside of one of the balconies. She went outside and looked up seen that same woman looking down a balcony and wailing something along the lines of “My daughter” over and over and when she looked down she saw the body of the two year old toddler crushed on top of a concrete block that was outside. Apparently the kid opened the sliding door that led out the balcony and was playing along the edge and lost her balance and fell off. She would’ve been around 24 this year if she had lived.

It was my hairdresser who told me this story. When she was younger she went on a trip to Europe with a friend. At some point they hitched a ride to the next town over when they realized they were being driven the wrong way. She had a knife the size of a finger with her so she pressed it against the driver’s neck and told him to pull over. The moment he did, she and her friend hurried off the road and they hid in the woods a ways in. The guy had driven off but came back probably 30 minutes later and the van was now packed with guys. Thankfully they didn’t look that thoroughly before they drove off again.

Anyways, it was late at night and I still wasn't asleep. Instead, I looked at the top of my window the curtains weren't covering and I saw flashing blue and red lights, like from a police car. It was Christmas time, but I only have blue lights that are outside during that time. On top of that, I hear someone playing the banjo and it was freaking me out. I didn't peek out my window though. When I asked if any of my family had heard it, they didn't know what I was talking about.

My sister-in-law, Kathy, took a road trip after high school. The year was 1990. Kathy's parents had always been strict, so the only way that they would allow her to take the trip is if her older brother, Robert, came along. The plan was to hike some trails along the east coast then spend a couple of days on the beach in Adelaide. One night, after a long day of hiking, Kathy and Robert decide to set up camp, have a bite to eat, and rest their legs for awhile. They are looking at the stars and eating when a man who looks like a park ranger approaches them. Kathy stands up, thinking that the ranger is about to tell them that they had to move from their spot. Ranger guy waves her off, and says, "Beautiful night." She agrees, and he starts pointing out some of the constellations in the sky. He tells her that he has been rabbit hunting all day, and he was just making some stew. Kathy did her best Elmer Fudd impression, "Don't you mean wabbit hunting?" Ranger guy smiled and sat down by the fire.
He asks Kathy where she is from, and she says, "Darwin." He tells her that she is long way from home, and he asks her what brings her all the way out here. Kathy tells him about her road trip plans, and Ranger guy offers advice on some trails and even a cave that she might be interested in exploring. A couple of times during the conversation, Kathy glances over at her brother, and she notices that Robert is staring daggers at the man. Robert is sipping his beer from his left hand instead of his right, and she realizes that he is keeping his right hand empty so that he could grab the rifle by his feet, if he needed.
Ranger guy has a nice smile, he is knowledgeable about the land around him, and he seems really friendly, and Kathy is honestly enjoying his companionship more than her brother's at the moment. Ranger guy stands up and tells Kathy that he has a campsite up ahead, and that he is making rabbit stew if her and her brother wanted to join him. Kathy wants to say "yes," because the man has been fun company, and rabbit stew sounds way better than another night of jerky and chips. Before she can say anything, Robert firmly answers, "We're fine, thanks." Ranger guy gives the universal "no problem" shrug and leaves. Robert watches Ranger guy walk out of sight, then he tells Kathy they need to leave.
The next day, Robert tells Kathy that a girl that had been hiking in that area had been raped and left for dead. The girl managed to walk several miles before she finally found a road. Her hands hand been bound behind her back, a gag was still tied tight around her mouth, and her shorts had been cut open in the front. While he did not outright accuse Kathy's ranger friend of the crime, it was obvious what Robert was implying.
It was not until almost ten years later, when Kathy would see the face of Ranger guy on tv. He was in handcuffs with two police officers on each arm. It was Ivan Milat. Kathy says that the scariest thing about him is that she could see how people would let their guard down around him, because he was so charming.

Once I went camping with my family, I was like 10 and my sister was 7. I was sleeping in one tent with my mom and my sister, and my uncle and his girlfriend were sleeping in another. We had burgers for dinner, so there was some leftover fat and grease and whatnot on the campfire. In the middle of the night, when we were all sleeping, my uncle heard noises outside. There were coyotes eating the leftovers. He got up his girlfriend and opened our tent, and said "Me and you girlfriend are going good to sleep in the car because there are coyotes outside, do you want to do the same?" And you mom said, half asleep, "no, I'll watch for them." So my uncle left the tent door open, and went to his car.
So, yeah, we slept outside with coyotes that night.

It was a black van with tinted windows. We still didn't want to be seen so we stayed hidden. The car then pulled into the parking lot of this park. We saw someone get out and throw something into the dumpster. (no it wasn't a body bag this isnt a Reddit story). We obviously didn't check but it looked like a bunch of grocery bags filled with something. Definitely creepy, still puzzles me about what this person was doing at around 3 am..

I was going to work at 4am (I live a mile from work, so I bike in) and it's April 1st, and ahead of me on the road is a bunch of glowing fog, and the road lights are out. In the fog figures are moving, looks like kids playing in slow motion, but their legs move like deer, it's out of focus and feels dreamy, so I pinch myself, ouch, not a dream and they are still there as I pedal closer. My route takes me off that road about 100 feet from where it was. As I turn off the road all the figures start running towards the houses in the direction I was turning. There are two fenced in houses there, no real way for them to get to me easily, as I watch, a 12 foot+ arm glowing white extends over a 20 foot tall tree and just waves at me... Never pedaled that fast before, got to the lit area near work and look back down the road to see if anything followed me. Nobody at work believed me due to the date. I still get chills taking this road 5 days a week, even as I'm back on day shift.

The one at 9:57 is something similar to what I have encountered but it was a couple of months ago so it was a bit fuzzy.
"So I like to go on late night walks (11 pm to - 2 in the morning) and had a odd felling but ignored it,I started jogging around my town and about an hour in I heard some weird noises like a dog whimpering behind a 7/11 so I checked it out and saw a man dressed in black dancing not like tango or anything but like that dance for Ring Around the Rosie just in a circle but the thing I could never forget that I still have nightmares to this day was his smile. It was a grin from dimple to dimple, his pupils were very tiny, his head was strange looking(like regular on the front but In the back the top was very pushed back like an alien)and after 10 seconds he stopped then lied on the floor I thought to myself 'poor guy he must be sick(mentally disabled)' but he kept the smile which I felt a sudden uneasyness so I left and started to go home.Everything was going well and I was at least 45 minutes from my house until,i heard humming. It was to twinkle twinkle Little star.I stopped and turned around and 'it' was skipping again under a light(I say it because I couldn't tell the gender there was no eyebrows or hair)so I stare for at least 20 seconds until he stops.then skips in my direction (keep in mind that this being was at least 6'9 and I was a measly 5'7) but the thing was he was skipping fast not slow not like he was at the 7/11 he was going at it so I said'hey can I help you?' there was no response unless you consider a smile as one so I started running.this thing was running faster than me and not breaking a sweat so I turned a corner in a neighborhood close to mine and started running in any corner I could find(pathway, block, even jumping fences)then I eventually lost him so I continue the last 10 minutes running and when I get home I lock the door, the windows, basically anywhere someone could come in from.I checked my clock and it was 4:25 so I went to my room. When I locked the window,I saw a figure of a man crouched behind my garbage can and looked longer.the 'man' was it, I got freaked the fuck out but the key difference from it features.he wasn't smiling,it had a face where I couldn't tell it's emotions then he danced/skipped away I never saw it after that and haven't heard/encountered it until 5 weeks ago there was a news report of someone missing, people who was with the person last said that the person was claming of seeing"a tall slender person who was smiling at him"I moved the next two weeks to Dallas
The time all this happened it was in San Antonio,TX if anyone has information please tell me

I once wanted to hike late night in the mountain alone. Then I looked at my pitiful phone as a flashlight on low charge, the tall trees, no map, the almost zero human inhabited mountain side and how I was the youngest person at the mountain resort. A cliche of a horror story scenario, that I noped the heck out of.

I wasn’t hiking but I was in my room. Maybe around 9 or 10 years old. I heard a weird loud noise outside. It sounded kind of like a plane. I heard for a while and then decided to take a look to see. The windows are near my twin brothers bed so I tried to be quiet. I opened the window and saw a weird object in the sky. It looked like a ship out of Star Wars kind of like a B Wing. and it was flying dangerously low to the ground. There was no way it was a plane because it would have been flying side ways with out a wing. It started to descend lower and lower. I waited for a bang covering my ears. But the bang never came I decided that I was just imagining but looking back in it, I don’t think I was.

Not me but a friend's story.
So this was actually told by a woman they saw while hiking.
They saw her hiking and greeted her. She said back hi the same as any normal person.
She asked them where they're stopping for the night, and he was wondering why she asked that, So he asked.
"Why do you want to know?"
She responded basically saying that she had been on this trail before. And was taking pictures on it, So she has a camera with a card in it.
This Is where it gets errie.
She set up her tent and laid out her sleeping bag, normal, normal.
She was finally dozing off until she heard leaves crushing and a branch snap.
Naturally she thought it was some animal. But they kept on happening. So she looked out and saw something run, she was concerned but thought it was still just a deer or something looking for a place to rest.
The crunching stopped and she dozed off.
She told them that since she was getting a bit tired didn't continue the full trail.
But when she came home, and checked the card. THERE WERE 3 PICTURES OF HER SLEEPING IN HER TENT, FROM DIFFERENT ANGLES.
So she decided that she'd come back a few months later to finally finish the trail an get pictures of nature, not her face.
She asked so she'd be close to some people she could trust in the case it happened again.
    Luckily it didn't.
Personally, if that ever happened to me, I'd be at take that trail EVER again.

Back in high school me and my buddies would go way out into public land along the river and get drunk. There was 2 spots within a 1/4 mile that were pretty well known. We were in the more obscure spot drinking (there’s probably about 9 of us, armed with nothing more than hatchets, saws, and lighters) and we heard screaming, blood curdling, for about 15 seconds. Not the kind that makes you concerned for someone, but the kind that makes you concerned for yourself. 3 of us decide to grab a hatchet and go check it out, it came from deeper in the woods than either of the spots. After walking way past where we believed it came from, while calling out and using our flashlights to see if we could find anything. After about 30 minutes we gave up and decided to go back to the fire. We came back to an almost out fire with no one there. We didn’t have cell reception so we figured they’d just got tired and bored and went home. We stayed out there drinking for another couple hours before calling it a night. When we hiked back to our cars, we got reception again with several missed calls from our friends. Turns out about 10 minutes after we left, they saw 4 figures in the woods, not our size, unresponsive and just staring at them. They all instinctually booked it back to the cars and left us there (we still had our personal rides). They were awfully relieved to find out were okay, and were quite concerned and sounded very shaken up. I don’t know why but it never stopped us from going back. Possibly unrelated but several rapes had occurred in those woods in the following months.

Whoever wrote the cougar story at 4:10 is so stupid. Wild cats are crazy smart, it's like they've never seen Lion King or something. Wild cats hide and slowly approach you, and then they pounce. They don't approach their food and start loudly making noises, they stay low and quiet. If it was making crying noises, it was probably looking for it's baby or something.

This comment will probably get buried in the seas of other comments but one night I was camping in boy scouts and the troop leader told us there had been some coyote sightings recently and to just be extra safe. You know, buddy system, flashlights, stay in your tent. So, being the scared and anticipating person I am, I expect to see a coyote. Well fast forward to 3 AM I shoot awake to the noise of scratching outside our tent. I panic and sort of nervously sort of excitedly wake up my tent mate. The animal is grumbling and crying and making all ranges of sounds but they sound extremely familiar. Kyle (tentmate) wakes up and as I'm explaining that there must be a coyote outside he starts crying and freaking out grabbing at me, whispering that coyotes do not make that sound. The scratching and noises continued for another 45 minutes or so. Hard to keep track of time. We found cigarettes outside of our tent in the morning. Smoking is forbidden in boy scouts.

It's weird how non confrontational people are. I keep a whole first aid setup in my car trunk plus fire axe, long crowbar and extinguisher (seen one too many wrecks/vehicles on fire on remote roads and want to let have a minimum of tools to try to help). It's just a regular night, I'm driving home from work and a car follows me -make a few random turns and they are indeed following me. So I drive home, pull in, and they slowly creep by. Streets a dead end and they HAVE to come back this way though. So I go to the trunk, get my axe, and start walking to the main road. They're coming back slowly, planning to creep by again I assume, and I angle towards them, picking up speed and turn the axe so they get a good look at its profile in the headlights. As they floor it I heft the axe and run at them.
    The hunter became the hunted.

Not really at night, but the sun was starting to set so close enough, right? My dad and I were out on ATVs (not hiking but still out in the woods and stuff) and going along some of the trails, when we see a car parked on the road. That’s not too strange, the atv trails and the roads are kind of the same thing here, so seeing one parked isn’t too strange. Probably just someone needing to check a map or something.
I’m riding behind my dad, when he stops, so I stop too. He’s looking at this truck, and now we can see that there’s no one inside of it. It’s a truck (Ford I believe) with current plates, but it just looks abandoned. There’s several propane tanks in the truck bed, probably empty, but we didn’t check. My dad just turned us around and drove back to our campsite.
And that’s the story about how we stumbled across what was likely a meth truck in the woods.

I’ve had some weird stuff happen while out at night that ranged from simple things like drunk college kids in togas(the college in town was a satellite campus so weird but not scary) to creepy footsteps behind us being a hoard of cats stalking us(they scattered immediately) to the terrifying dude invited us to a party in the woods just to vomit ectoplasm and make vailed threats. Moral of the story, it not worth the risk
