Flowers is part of the larger work entitled “The Garden Suite,” which also includes the works Frogs, March of the Arachnids, and Bees
As far back as I can remember, my mother always had a flower garden. She loved her roses, her daisies, her pansies...they were all precious to her. She would spend many hours outside gardening and making the world a little more beautiful. This movement and, truly, the entire Garden Suite is dedicated to and inspired by her.
Flowers attempts to convey the perfume and color of a large flower bed during a brief spring rainstorm. The slight alterations to the scale give the work a slightly exotic feel, which is appropriate for the colorful subjects at hand.
I owe a huge debt of gratitude to the “Garden Consortium,” a group of enthusiastic and generous bands and directors for sponsoring this project and believing that humor and whimsy have a legitimate place alongside all of the other emotions that music expresses so vividly (see list in the following pages)
If playing the entire Garden Suite, the correct order is:
    I. Frogs
    II. March of the Arachnids
    III. Flowers
    IV. Bees

Why is the horn so quiet. It sounds so much better when I’m playing with my band (I play horn)
