I'm glad you got out of the toxicity. I feel for your former coworkers. In Illinois, employers are legally required to provide a 20-minute meal break for any employee working 7.5 hrs or longer, and it *has* to come within the first 5 hrs of their shift.

Aww I'm so sorry about your experience. That cafe needs to be reported to your local labor bureau. You have to be paid minimum wage during training! It is against the law to be paid less than. As a server/bartender here is LA you get paid minimum wage in training due to the fact that tips are not part of income until post training. Get a lawyer and sue that owner. Sounds like they are a hot mess ripe for a lawsuit.
Okay so this is what I thought?!? A few years ago I applied for a server position downtown (this was before my other local cafe I worked at) and they told me during training I’d make $15/hr but then go down to $9 + tips after training. I was SO surprised when I learned it was *just* $9/hr even without tips…
Roxy also here in California there is no sub minimum wage; everyone is required to be paid at least the local minimum wage, which up here in San Jose is 17.55/hr, and any tip is on top of that 🙂
@StefaniaMarzelia as a local Illinois Business owner, what they did was totally illegal. State law requires the business owner makes up the difference for server wages. Meaning the 9 is legal (which i think is different now). However if you work 20 hours your tips have to make up the difference between the 9 and the minimum (state is 14) if the tips don't then the owner has to make up for it.

I worked as a barista in a combo restaurant and coffee shop. Pay started at $12 got tips after 2 weeks once i proved i knew what i was doing. I worked there from March-October last year and the more I knew what I was doing the more they expected. I became a shift for a bit until another shift was incredibly toxic and I realized I didn't need to deal with that and changed jobs. When I was a shift though I would do so many things at the same time. Drive, fryer, barista, runner, it was too much and they didn't care it was too much. They only made the schedule a week out also and it wasn't posted till the Friday before it we were lucky. Sometimes Saturday and that was frustrating. It got to the point where I had to tell them multiple times I wanted my days off together and they still wouldn't do it. My availability was wide open and they couldn't give me that. All I want for a work schedule is two days off in a row. It takes me a bit to relax and recharge. I can't do that with just one day off. Especially if I work early the next day.
Emphasis on the once you prove you know what you’re doing, it never ends. Some employers love to take advantage of employees that *get it* yet still mistreat them in the end … and it’s pretty sad.

Everyone must be paid at least the local minimum wage, which here in San Jose is 17.55, and any tip is on top of that. Also the law in California says you are allowed to sit during the shift unless they have a compelling reason to not allow it. We also require a 10 minute break every 2 hours, and a 30 minute meal break every four hours. If you work greater than five hours total, there MUST be a lunch break (the 30 minute meal break). But I don't know the law in Illinois. I think the 10 minute breaks are also required under federal law. 🙂
Actually, a lot of what she described *is* illegal in Illinois, including paying less than minimum wage during training, as well as not providing a 20-minute break in the first 5 hours.
Also from Cali, and you have to remember, we've got some of the best labour laws in the country, and are one of the only states that doesn't have a sub-minimum wage for tipped employees. That being said, all of this was still illegal. Even in states with the tipped employee caveat, the company _still_ has to pay out minimum wage if the employees don't make it up in tips. Illinois also requires a 20min break for every 7.5hrs worked. So, yeah, all kinds of labour law violations going on in that little coffee shop.
@@Amarianee "Also from Cali, and you have to remember, we've got some of the best labour laws in the country," Yes, except, here in the USA, it is spelled "labor". We have labor laws rather than labour laws. 🙂 "That being said, all of this was still illegal. " Yup. Though, in California, it's not even an issue, because you don't have the tipped employee wage. 🙂
@neutrino78x And I prefer "labour," just like, "colour, centre, neighbour," and other British spellings. Both are correct, and as a US native, it's my right to choose, because while the preferred way to spell said words, is without the 'u,' both are correct 😛
This is insane, even at the worst places I've worked, they never stooped to this level. Not American though, but that shouldn't matter, even 15 dollars is far too little imo. The schedule is posted 1-2 months ahead at both cafés I've worked at, and it is illegal to change shifts a week or so before like that, which was the red flag that immediatelly got me to leave the one resturant I worked at.

Don't know if laws in Illinois is different, however, in Colorado for every 3-3.5 hrs worked, a 15 minute break is law. 5-5.5 hrs a 30 min lunch. (Might have some confusion going from retail to corporate but regardless) I would look into work laws, talk to a workers rights lawyer. I think you owning a coffee shop/Cafe or coffee brand/coffee additive line would be an interesting idea or career for yourself. You're creative brain is fabulous, honey. Keep up the good work. I will be watching for sure!
I couldn’t agree more! It shouldn’t fall on the customers to pay my bills, everyone’s employer should be paying them an adequate amount with tips just being an added bonus on top 🥲
Working interviews that benefit the company are illegal. Discouraging breaks is illegal. Not paying your employees the difference when they aren’t making minimum wage is illegal. I’m seeing a trend here.
So many illegal things here but especially during training (if you are a tipped/sub minimum wage employee) you get paid minimum wage so you should have been paid that and you have legal case. Also the breaks are mandatory by law. It’s like 15 minute shift every 4 hours 😅😅 girl if you don’t sue or report them to Better Business Bureau or some shi I will I’m actually pissed off rn
10:23 Ok, what the hell are Illinois's labour laws?? I know CA labour laws are super strict, but I find it hard to believe that both, no breaks for 7hrs _and_ sub-minimun wage without making tips, are legal in any state. Thanks, now I'm going down a state labour law rabbit hole
Can confirm: IL is jank, compared to CA _buuttt_ if you actually only got paid $9/hr while not being tip eligible, that was indeed illegal. The restaurant is required to pay state minimum wage if you don't make up the difference in tips. Also, if he was working you 7.5hrs and not 7hrs, then yes, you were absolutely entitled to a 20min meal break.
Maybe the manager was up to shenanigans?? Anyone trustworthy in that role should know the law... Could he be a FanGirl like me?? Stefania isnt a everybody name 😍 Let your haters be your motivators and keep pushing towards your dreams ❤❤❤

Yes, except, here in the USA, it is spelled "labor". We have labor laws rather than labour laws. 🙂
"That being said, all of this was still illegal. "
Yup.
❤That looks so good Stefania. You got this girl your dream will come to fruition
So much luv 🥹😭❤️
@@StefaniaMarzelia ❤️ You're determined and you have experience so it will work.
Sorry you had such a bad experience, love your videos.
You were taken advantage of. 100%
Yep… 😭😭😔
This is insane, even at the worst places I've worked, they never stooped to this level. Not American though, but that shouldn't matter, even 15 dollars is far too little imo. The schedule is posted 1-2 months ahead at both cafés I've worked at, and it is illegal to change shifts a week or so before like that, which was the red flag that immediatelly got me to leave the one resturant I worked at.
Girl, I am so damn proud of you! You're going to make several more mistakes and continue to learn from them (career wise). Your outlook on how this past experience was, is truly encouraging. I believe in you and I can't wait to see where you're heading to next in your entrepreneurial journey! ❤
Virtually hugging you from Chicago 🥹❤️
I would file a complaint to the department of labor if a store was doing that to their employees.
It’s not fair to you or any new hires who want to work at that café.
They were violating labour laws and you could probably talk to a lawyer if you really wanted. That owner is garbage.
This is giving me flashbacks of BAD experiences with Starbucks lmao. And that was like 20+ years ago
My work gives me our rosters the night before that week starts, soemtimes as late as 10pm.
I hate that!! that’s not right…
It does make things difficult
Girl I am speaking in faith in the future we will be able to go to our cafes and coffee shops and order the Stefania :-) just speaking it into existence cuz I drink sounds real good
I also want to state the fact that I love it that your dog is giving input off-screen with his little grunts :-) so cute you could almost add speech bubble to his response lol
My dream!!! 🥹😍☕️☕️☕️
You sounded really happy to be a barista again. That sounds awful but a good lesson that you learned from the experience. Best wishes on your future ventures.
I love being a barista! But might do it a little different next time 😉 Best wishes to you too, friend x
Get it girl! Follow your heart keep moving forward towards your dream. I'm in a transition with my career as well and I feel excited about it! Don't feel bad we only have one life let's Get It!!🫶
WE GOT THIS!!! ❤️❤️
Don't know if laws in Illinois is different, however, in Colorado for every 3-3.5 hrs worked, a 15 minute break is law. 5-5.5 hrs a 30 min lunch. (Might have some confusion going from retail to corporate but regardless)
I would look into work laws, talk to a workers rights lawyer.
I think you owning a coffee shop/Cafe or coffee brand/coffee additive line would be an interesting idea or career for yourself. You're creative brain is fabulous, honey. Keep up the good work. I will be watching for sure!
No one should have to rely on tips to make a living. I'm disgusted with the entire tipping culture, and I'm American. Also, I'm a fellow Chicagoan!
Um….. no breaks during a 7 hour shift is illegal in Illinois.
Live and learn, right? 😅
Yes, live and learn… 😂
Oh Chicago…..
Smart. I wouldn’t either.
but what's stopping you getting a mini van / trailer, and pushing your babies onto the public?
…. My friend, you are reading my mind rn. This is literally, exactly, what I want to do 🥺
Girl, all the red flags before you even accepted!
I KNOW 😭 I was trying to be optimistic about it all but sometimes you just can’t…
Sis , you are a brave one . I can’t wait to buy your products some day 💗
Been following you for a long time now. Love your videos. You’re funny and real! You’re a friend in my head. #Chitown 💙
CHI TOWN BESTIES 😁✨
i honestly think you should report this company because so much of this sounds illegal to me.
Maybe the manager was up to shenanigans?? Anyone trustworthy in that role should know the law... Could he be a FanGirl like me?? Stefania isnt a everybody name 😍 Let your haters be your motivators and keep pushing towards your dreams ❤❤❤
So I’m curious about the “first” day. If it wasn’t previously state it was a working interview, go get your money please.
I made $9 an hour at a Kmart in West Virginia in 2012 when I was being terribly taken advantage of. This story is way worse than that!
Is this the same coffee shop that you had a long conversation with the owner a a while back? If so that ain’t gone be good karma on them considering how they did that
Yep, same one... 😭
this vids making me MAD dude. I hate how awful these business owners can be. Like respect your employees. The employees are the people who fucking MAKE the money.
It’s all for the owners to profit more while exploiting their employees. It’s disgusting and is sadly happening everywhere
Please report this business for your coworkers.
Paying $15 to get to work and making $9 at work that's losing $6 a day plus your time spent there
I love seeing how transparent you were in this video, that’s what life journeys are all about, discovering yourself, your likes and dislikes, and experiencing new things to determine whether they are for you or not for you. What are your options, what are not your options, I’m so proud of you and happy for you, and I believe in your success, and I can’t wait to see what you do next.🩷🩷🩷🩷
This was so encouraging to read!! Thank you for your kindness, friend 🥹❤️
Let me know when you like open your own coffee shop👀🤣. I’ll be one of your first customers🙌🏽
