One thing that often gets overlooked by new speedrunners is that even casual, slower speedruns can be helpful to advancing community knowledge, especially in small communities where the game is less likely to be fully explored. In multiple small web games where I hold the record on src, I've learned new tricks from players with much slower times than me-I'm talking several minutes slower in sub 5 minute games. One of the new tricks came from seeing a sloppy mistake that revealed something new about the game, and the others were simply things I hadn't considered before. So don't feel intimidated into thinking you'll won't have anything to offer until you get good enough to compete with the top players-you never know when one of your early runs might demonstrate something new. Great video, I'm glad youtube recommended it to me!
Awesome video! Thanks for the feature! Super informative and helpful for people who have questions about speedrunning and just a relatively well executed vid about a really cool topic!
Not gonna lie, I am still struggling with the thought of speedrunning, because of the time it takes to learn a game and practive it a lot... But this video was really helpful in my decision. Especially the last counter question was *chefs kiss* Thx for the video ^^
This was so thoughtfully put together, I really loved the points you made about how you can make a positive impact to the community, and well, just being apart of it makes a huge difference and I didn't realise that. Thanks for a wonderful video tomshi ^.^
awesome video. I started practicing Luigi's Mansion a few months back but i stopped because i had other games to play but i rarely get tired of that one. Thanks for the tips
Great video, Tom! A lot of people think you have to start out as a master at the game you choose, but this video makes speedrunning seem very approachable. All you really need is a game and a timer, speed and skill come with time.
I know I’ve said it to you already, but I really liked this video and if this is something I had to watch before I entered the community it would have helped so so much. I don’t usually feel very accepted I guess (?) in the smo community and it took me a while to find my little circle of friends in the scene. Something like this would have helped me with that a ton. Thanks for making this video Tom, it’ll be beneficial to so many people. PS thanks for the feature lol
I'm not too big on the whole speedrun thing or community. So what I'm about to write might already exist in some capacity that I don't know about. But I've always felt like Speedruns need two completely separate categories/names. There needs to be Speedruns and Glitch Speedruns. For example, the title of this video should be "Should YOU Speedrun and/or Glitch Speedrun?" I know there are all kinds of sub category speed runs, but there needs to be a huge distinct difference between Speedruns where the player uses glitches, and Speedruns where the player actually plays the game, because i hate when I click on a speedrun video, just to watch some guy glitching through walls and shit. Like why would I be impressed by someone using a glitch? And don't get me wrong.. I don't think there's anything wrong with Glitch Speedrunners... they just need to be kept separate from Speedrunners. To me, there is a huge difference between watching Glitchers and Non-glitchers. When I'm watching a speedrun with no glitches... I'm more amazed when someone does something am I'm like "Damn, I never even thought about doing it that way. That's a neat way of doing that part of the game. I'm gonna go try that"... AS OPPOSED to glitchers, where I say to myself "Oh, that's neat..... oh wait, he's just using a glitch there. Ok. Not very creative, and no critical thinking done there, but ok". If I know a speedrun is using glitches before I watch it. I'll just skip to the end to see the time. Because the time still intrigues me. Like which glitcher can finish the game the quickest. Kind of like saying "beat this game as fast as possible by any means"... And anything goes. See who can finish it quickest. It's fun to see final times on stuff like that. Which actually bring me to my next point: If you told someone to beat a game as fast as they could, and they glitched through half of it. Did they actually beat/finish the game? To me, they only beat PART of the game. Of course, if you wanted to get super technical, any speedrun really only beats PART of the game, since even if you're not using glitches.. you're still running past a lot of stuff. So that argument is a little mute. There just doesn't seem to be enough of a distinct difference between the two (as evidence of the title of this video) and other articles/videos I click on that all say "Speedrun", but NEVER "Glitch Speedrun".
I've always wanted to try speedrunning or contribute to the community and this video was very helpful and easy to understand. Thank you. Hope you enjoy the new sub ;)
who else had a dumb reason to start speedrunning? Mine was when my sister watched gt live and was like fck it imma teach my brother how to do some speedrun tricks. Here I am 3 years later as a former top 100 Australian Sonic forces runner and had held a no.1 on a level for a while (i don't do any% i do I.Ls)
Wow very cool! Thanks! But how do you keep playing consistent? If I am making a PB in any Game I feel bad because I know I can do better. And that kinda messes my mind up… :(
Nothing but practice can help you improve, something like speedrunning is usually a very slow grind once you're past the initial few runs and is why most quit early.
@@Tomshiii That in it'self isn't dumb, but telling your average loser like me that they should do it only to humiliate themselves in front of a community, that is kinda dumb.

Man great video! Perfectly summarizes speedrunning as a whole
"you could also end up interacting with the most unintelligible people you've come across in a while" cuts to aggy in maid costume lmfao
at least he's cute
The way you’re so good at editing 😩
1:55 Oh hey, it’s me :)
Also great job on the vid :)
Awesome video! You were part of the reason I ever started speedrunning, including the choice of game. If I wasn't sold before, I am now!

You know, kinda feels like you missed the entire actual point of the video.
There is one word for that
"glitchless"
You know, one of the most common category accross all games

Watching the video and commenting twice to bless it in the yt algorithm cuz it’s a banger.
Woah.. did not expect fancy pants to be in this video! It's definitely a great game to speedrun :)
When I saw someone had a pb in it I had a huge blast from the past
hello yes mr algorythm this is one for the greats feed it into you clutches
Already very very into speedrunning but still a great video
Very cool video gamer tom :)

25 seconds in and I'm hooked for life

I wish the algorithm would bless the video, but it's less likely than me getting DSS and 3dss in a single run.
Ah yes the guy who spends hours learning just to beat the game fast ...so u spend time trying to spend less time ?
Yeah I don’t get it either
wow you guys learn how to play sports just to... play them again but better?? kinda dumb ngl

No you shouldn't
Unless you've got X-man mutant levels of reflexes and patience, anyway.
