I used to only do short runs because I don’t have time for long runs, but recently I started doing long runs without recording myself. That way I can just pause the timer if I need to take a break or go do something. The shorter categories started to get really stressful but I find doing the long categories to be a lot more relaxing.

I always find it funny/interesting what different runners consider to be a "long" run. People coming from KFR, or even SM64 16 Star, might consider SMO Any% to be really long. But there's also the opposite extreme too.
I recently started running Multi-Mario Sandbox Any%, a 3-4 hour category, and to me it just feels like an absolute marathon. I literally only have time to do a single no-reset run per session, with only 1 or 2 sessions per week. But a Zelda runner might consider a 3-4 hour run to be SHORT!

That feeling when your speedrun resumé has runs of 2min and runs of 10+hours
    Gotta love it

loved the vid! one thing that i think would hold me back with longer runs is the mental block that comes with splits - looking over and seeing that you’re MINUTES behind your pb seems like it would be really disheartening. for that reason i think your split method (literally Cap - “the rest” lol) would help

yeah, there can still be that element of just "knowing" you're behind, but sometimes it also shocks you when you think you're minutes behind but you're actually flat or ahead aha

Speaking from personal experience I really recommend switching up the category from Any% to 100% or a similar kind or vice versa and just ignoring that "one" category if you feel like you're hitting a mental blockade. Because often times (especially in 2D platformers/games) there is a lot of unique movement, routes and tricks that would normally be slower in Any% or wouldn't be included anyway due to obvious differences. However, that extra side of that new longer category can sometimes actually allow you to see new backups, ideas and movement which may be slower in Any% but can help you see new potential and new methods which you may never considered for even the category you just left. From backups that keep your run alive where you've become more confident in without panicking, from finding new joy and motivation in a category you previously felt you'd never see a better time in and much more. As an example, I was stuck on a 100% run which ironically enough was my second finished run ever but I after that couldn't beat it even after days of grinding and choking a good attempt on pace 2 hours in at the end of the run from a single misinput (basically to get WR/PB I'd need to play without any big chokes and mistakes or the run is immediately dead). However, after doing a break and doing other categories (200% and another Any% variation) I came back without even really practicing for that run and got the time I wanted on just the second day, while even having a late game death where I thought the run was dead.
Another thing worth noting, especially for any top runner reading this is that it's absolutely helpful to step away and take a break from a game. Even if you'll be gone for months, even years, you aren't actually "falling off" but are able to see new ideas and potential after just some time getting into that game again, so if you feel like you're hitting a wall, try to step back, try again and perhaps change your attitude to enjoy/view the game in a different way than before, because trust me that helps a lot.

I do casual short smo runs that I learned from Tomshi. Most cons are on how competitive other runners are.

As a multi Mario runner, longer runs will always be the most appealing to me but I found breaking down both sides very cool and interesting.

Personally I've found Odyssey's Any% to be a really great sweet spot. That hour to an hour and a half is pretty good. The extra length really cuts down on the repetition from back when I ran SM64 16-star. And it's a good chunk of gaming time, I'd rather do one run of Any% than 2 or 3 16-star runs.
I'd love to run a lengthy category, like All Moons, but getting that kind of raw free time is just... impossible with a 9-5.

I just started speedrunning Odyssey but I used to grind the hell out of Smash Bros Melee for competition so I'm looking forward to something fresh and love it so far. I don't think I'll stick to Any% forever, at some point I'm gonna play SMS too. But I don't know if I'll ever have the time and motivation to run something like all moons. But I do like to take my time with games, so maybe I'll do something like Dark or Darker side eventually. Not quite as much ot a as time sink and not quite as stressful as any%

When it comes to speedrunning, I've gradually eased into longer categories and now having done All Moons twice, I like to think that I enjoy running shorter categories is to gain a feeling of accomplishment and running longer categories is for enjoyment. As I run those longer categories, they slowly start to feel like the shorter runs with how I improve, how repetition makes it feel like less of a gauntlet of a run, and how tight it can end up being to pb. Even with that in mind though, if I want to just do a no reset of something and chill with chat or friends, I'll always prefer longer runs due to how like if I'm doing an any% no reset for "fun", I'd probably just get tilted and maybe even end up quitting halfway through because my standards for that are a lot higher than if I were to do a no reset run for darker, where losing time doesn't create a mental barrier.

I personally enjoy the grind of a shorter category. Anything longer than 40 minutes feels extremely long to me.
That being said I have always wanted to learn a longer run. I thought about trying out Mario Galaxy.
