      Yeah, I love how the Grandpa just came on aboard before gaining permission. Then after explaining that his grand-children's dad was a viewer and fan Ruth have them all permission to "come on aboard".
      Are boat manners and laws different in Canada? I thought it was bad manners and against the law to board a boat without permission worldwide.

    Talking about Makita, I bought a very large Makita drill in Darwin in 1974. Today my son still has that drill, keeping it in the steel box that it came in. It's now close to 50 years old and is still used regularly. Watching you install that windlass, I am interested to see that you are using much the same procedure that I employed when I installed a rather substantial (manual) windlass on my 45 ft all-wood trimaran, also in the mid-70s. Instead of that wooden block that you put in under the deck directly under the windlass, I bought an old railway sleeper that I bolted flush to the underside of the foredeck, between the bollard post and the forward crossbeam of the tri, which was a giant of a thing. When everything was in place, that windlass wasn't going anywhere!

    Sugestion, put a stainles 16 gauge steel collit (pipe) in the two large holes to protect the wood.

    • @thomasarussellsr
      @thomasarussellsr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I was going to suggest going just slightly over sized (one holesaw/1/16-1/8 over the hole in the windless) and epoxy in a brass, bronze, copper, or stainless pipe/tube in the wood hole, but y'all beat me to it. They could still cut some sheet brass/bronze or whatever to fit and tack it to the half hole in the backing block as well as epoxying it into the hole.
      Reinforced nylon hose/tube might work to direct the chain/rode into the chain locker area. (The large clear hose with the reinforcement lines run through it.) Just make sure the chain/rode lockers drain into the bulge to be pumped back out. (Friendly reminder)

    Traditionally the backer block is through bolted to the two deck beams for and aft. And hawse pipes are usually fitted to guide both the roads and any/all the water to the chain locker and bilge.

    • @SailingYachtDreamcatcher
      @SailingYachtDreamcatcher 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Traditionally a hawse-pipe carries the anchor-chain or rode through the deck to the outsid of the hull, where the anchor shank is drawn into the hawse-pipe and stowed on recovery. (Usually not found on small yachts like this) The pipe/s through the deck to the anchor locker underneath the winch gypsey/s are called spurling pipes.

    You probably know this already, but plastic pvc pipe can be heated with a heat gun and reshaped to add curves etc. This might help you route your rode and chain to its resting place.

    • @kevnwarriner8819
      @kevnwarriner8819 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah they used that technique on the wet exhaust system for the engine, the crash pump and the regular pumps to get the pipes from the engine to the transom and from the pumps in the bilge to the deck box where the pump outlets are situated, every pipe was expanded to take right angle joints where necessary and to bend the pipes into position to be fastened to the Hull and secure them out of the way in storage space to prevent damage and keep them out of the way of supplies packed into the storage spaces, especially the wet exhaust system pipe the last thing you want is that getting hot as the hot water goes through it and it damaging food stores in thin plastic/cellophane packaging, and you don't want the pipe crushed by the stores moving around in the storage space in heavy Seas. Hope this finds you well and as happy as times allow.

      Yeah over the years of my working life I have realized that everybody has their own way to be in the groove and be productive. Some can only function if every tool is organized at every step of the project, personally I'm like this and take time to put each tool back before continuing on to the next stage unless I am really under the gun. Piles of tools make me anxious and mess with my concentration, but I also have friends who thrive on chaos and will splay every single tool all over the place and just go at the project hammer and tongs, and these people usually are about twice as productive as me in the same time frame. The ones I know anyway. They always seem to be able to rattle out progress when I am fussing around re-organizing the tools in their respective places.
      I have a hard time finding even half a day a week to make any decent progress on our boat with my job and other commitments. I am forever in awe of the productivity of these two.

  • @mattevans-koch9353

    If you haven't procured the piping for the chain and rode pipes, look at using 2" Tigerflex type hose. It is thick wall with embedded spiral ribbing and is non-collapsable. It is usually clear and will reduce the sound of the chain and rode going into the chain locker. Great work you two. Rediviva is looking fantastic. Have a good week ahead.

    • @Pocketfarmer1

    • @thomasarussellsr
      @thomasarussellsr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, and stopping to have to drive to town for things is a major time suck for anyone doing any project, even if it is us land locked land-lubbers in the midwest. 20 minute drive to Ace, Lowe's, or WalMart add 10 minutes to Tractor Supply for specialty farm equipment or bolts Ace or Lowe's doesn't carry or about a 40 minute drive (all these drive are one way there times) to Grainger for hardware that non of these other places carry. Living out in the country adds a lot of drive time to "a quick trip to town" for supplies.
      But we get to do things we couldn't do in a back yard inside city limits. If I wanted to I could put up a temporary boat house and build a boat in my back yard. And the Ohio river is close enough to launch a boat RedAviva's size if I chose to build one. Then down the Ohio, down the Mississippi river, out through the Gulf of Mexico and into the ocean. So, it would be possible, I'd just have to truck it about 36 miles to the closest place to launch a boat that size into the Ohio river.

    Hi guys, Rick from Australia here again.. Just a thought on your chain shute. How i saw it early in the video, there is not enough bite or mesh on the chain like that. you only have 90 degrees of drive or braking.. If you allowed the chain to continue under the windlass and drop into a shute on the other side, you would have nearly 270 degrees of bite and control of the chain.

    Super cool. Some advice. When one had a support a piece where holes are drilled, take a longer piece of wood and place it in the middle and apply pressure by pushing on the ends way of of drill,s way. The devil always watch and have his own mind. Believe me, a drill through the hand is not only painful but one can loose a hand. When it come to large bolts, look at threaded rod as a option. Welding a nut on the one side or use a acorn nut is mu h cheaper and one can always cut any length needed.When it come to mounts where wood is part of the structure, instead of washers,cut small lengths of flat bar and place 90 degree to the grain of the wood.

      ahoy, agreed, watching Ruth push up on that block while it was being drilled reminded me of having to haul one of the crew to the hospital from doing the same thing back about 94 or so. He didn't lose his hand, but it was a hella mess for certain

    • @lbb101
      @lbb101 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Pocketfarmer1 The sampson post is an integral part of the hull structure. The post reaches from the keelson until above the deck and is wedged in between between deck beams with additional blocking. The whole purpose of a sampson post is to provide an anchor point for mooring, towing, anchoring. It's not build in there for rigging (even so the whisker stays of the bowsprit are attached to it normally). Frankly: The sampson post is one of the strongest pieces of timber on wood boats.

    • @Pocketfarmer1
      @Pocketfarmer1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@lbb101 top marks you have described a Samson post very well. Those posts are really strong hence the name. What I was referring to is the roller on the bowsprit several feet out board of the hull. When things get bad, the line of force will run from the anchor along the bottom up the chain , be bent around that bowsprit fitting and back to the windless . A snubber will transfer some or all the load from the windlass to the Samson post, but all the force is being bent around that fitting. This bot in no dingy with a ring in the bow for a painter. Her bows with all the wood of stem structure are probably the strongest part of the boat and certainly of the hull itself. The anchoring forces when bending over all that wood will tend to gust push the hull down a bit . And it can still be snubbed. I stand by what I said the last point of contact should be the hull . I did not say that was the point of attachment.

    • @squarerigapprentice
      @squarerigapprentice 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the sheave on the bowsprit is sized for the intended purpose there should be zero problem at all. All these comments fearing that the bowsprit and or the bowsprit sheave will break clearly have never worked on vessels with bowsprits. Bowsprits are designed to take the enormous loads imposed by the rig in high wind and high seas with the vessel pitching etc... They are extremely well supported by bitts or a sampson post and underlying deck structure on most boats, and usually the anchor chain rollers are placed well inboard to reduce the leverage they impose on the roller and the sprit. Vessels with bowsprit rollers usually run nylon snubbers off both rollers, nipped to the chain and sharing the load on both sides of the sprit, made fast aft to the sampson post or bitts.
      furthermore for Rediviva's size her bowsprit is enormous in girth, very strongly built and well supported.
      When anchored with proper nylon snubbers absorbing the shock, even in extremely harsh conditions it is highly unlikely that the force imposed on the bowsprit rollers would exceed the forces the standing rig is designed to handle. Usually for gaff rigged vessels one rule of thumb was the shrouds on one side should have a collective tensile strength of the displacement of the vessel. Not sure what this vessels displacement is but has to be atleast 18-20000 lbs.

    agree with the last 2 comments, (rebuilding the drill and using the flex hose) but wanted to add that if 1 1/4 abs vent pipe might work too, if you fill it with sand and heat it with a heat gun or over a stove (not too close) the sand keeps it from folding and collapsing. I think you can find some "dirt cheap"... sorry. I'm guessing by eye that it would fit all the way through so the chain doesn't scuff the endgrain and you wouldn't have to keep redoing the epoxy. Another thought is you could combine the 2, if the abs doesn't fit you can slit a short piece, bend it down to size, epoxy it in, and then screw the flex pipe into it. Very exciting times

    You might look into using schedule 80 grey pvc pipe to guide the chain. You can glue a flange on one end to secure it to the under side of the deck and if you fill the piece of pipe full of sand first you can heat the pvc pipe with a torch and bend it to the shape you need without crimping the pipe. Schedule 80 is twice as thick as regular pvc and it's super tough and won't rust from the chain wearing on it.

      @thomasarussellsr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, a torch will work, but I prefer a heat gun. Less chance of burning a hole in the pipe. Different methods for different folks. Both work though. Either way, keep the heat moving.

      If someone would explain to me what a WINDLESS is I would appreciate it. Is it the opposite of a windMORE ? Maybe its related to CORKING. who knows with ye salty sea dogs. Been around boats of all sort my entire life ( 63 yrs ) and i still muse at the atrocious grammar. It's the 21st century. We have spell check. You want to make an impression make it a good one. Ruth and Garrett work hard to educate, entertain and enlighten us. We should endeavor to not embarrass them with ignorance, carelessness or plain laziness. You make it sound like boaters are a largely uneducated lot and it pains me to see you degrade a couple of fine producers like that

    for the pipe to the chainlocker you could go for a schedule 40 pvc pipe and heat it to get it to the shape you like. Cheap and easy to replace and get hold of a new one virtually anywhere in the world...You may need to drill the hole larger and run the pipe up to the bottom of the windlass...

    On ships anchor winches there is a "tooth", I do not know the english name: in italian it is called "caccia catena - chain chaser": it's function is to avoid what you just saw yourselves: the chain wrapping around the gipsy. It is positioned just where the chain start to go round. You could say: the chain goes down the chute, so no need of such a device ( a simple iron tooth): are you so sure?

    I was thinking that maybe the best way to protect the end grain from the chain rattling through would be epoxy to seal off moisture but line with a length of copper sheeting/tube or perhaps even leather as the chain will quickly abrade just the epoxy alone.

    Not happy again this week. I settled down for a 25 minute episode. It felt like 5 minutes and you were signing off. Do you not realise how invested we are? If you say it’s a 25 minute episode. I want it to FEEL like a 25 minute episode! Just because the clock confirms 25 minutes have passed does not void the chance you are using a space time continuum.
    Thank you for another superb episode

      Silent Storm. I have no problem with the content. My observation is, the time seems to pass too quickly quickly when I settle down to watch it. I totally agree with M. Diggler. Although I am unaware of the Skosh being unit of measurement for time (obviously not metric). If it means more random shots of Swab with Ruth having to have later nights editing in order to give us longer episodes. I cast my vote for longer episodes.

    • @thomasarussellsr
      @thomasarussellsr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, it definitely feels like a lot shorter time goes by than the clock says when watching their videos. That, I suppose, means they have done their job making and editing their content in such a way the viewers can really feel that they are pulled into the story and feel like they are right there alongside them on the journey.
      As the old saying goes, "time flies when you're having fun".
      But, I agree, I settle in for hour long episodes as well. Though I wouldn't wish that much extra work on Ruth. I'm sure she is busy enough going through so much footage for a 25 minute video.
