Obviously Christmas Vacation should be viewed in the next few weeks but European Vacation shouldn't be forgotten. It is a seriously underrated classic.
This movie perfectly captures the utter frustration of traveling cross country with your family. Clark Griswold’s mental breakdowns are truly a thing of beauty.
During that same sit-down, there's also the great little gag where Clark mentions Rusty will "be a man soon" (paraphrased), and Rusty replies something like "I just became one 3 days ago" (again, paraphrased). An obvious reference to his cousin teaching him how to "bop his baloney". That line always got a chuckle outa me!
Christmas Vacation is a true classic. Clark's breakdown in this movie is just a practice session compared to his collapse into madness in Christmas Vacation.
The Girl in the Ferrari wasnt just some random hot girl, it was Christie Brinkley the biggest Supermodel at that time, She was also in the Video for Billie Joel’s Uptown Girl
The movie's original ending, which was scripted but never filmed, was a lot darker as Clark and his family take theme park owner Roy Wally hostage at his house and force him to sing songs. However, a SWAT Team breaks in and they save Wally while Clark and his family end up in jail, but Wally let's them off the hook and tells them that they have been banned from his theme park for life and they must never return to California ever again. The agree and the Griswolds fly back to Chicago.
@@NiceDudeMovieNight it's also based off a short story from the son's point of view. It involves real Disney Land and I think the dad gets shot by the end. EDIT: my mistake, the dad gets a real gun, shoots Walt Disney in the thigh, and then goes to jail

Hats off to the great Imogene Coca (Aunt Edna)! Now best know for this movie, she was one of the inventors of live TV sketch comedy, winning her Emmy in 1952.
Christmas Vacation is definitely a must watch - it really shares the original's charm - he tries SO hard to stay positive and keep moving...and always nice to see his wife have his back.

Back in the 80’s my family used to drive from New Jersey to Georgia every summer to visit family who lived in the backwoods. This movie cracked us up so much because it reminded us of our own trips. It’ll always have a place in my heart. We even stopped at the most random tourist spots and truck stops just like Clark. Great memories.
I remember my dad showing me this movie when I was a kid, and loving it, then watching it as an adult and seeing multiple things that I missed as a kid. I was so glad that the remake held up and was pretty funny as well.

Vacation is one of my favorite road trip movies. I still remember my first actual vacation/road trip that I went on by myself as an adult over to Pennsylvania back in 2003. My exit in Pittsburgh was closed, and I ended up getting lost in downtown Pittsburgh. After stopping to get directions (this was before I had a cell phone), I got on US 22 heading east out of Pittsburgh. They were widening the road and had it narrowed down to one lane in each direction. I was literally crawling at about 2 miles per hour and watching the temperature gauge on my Grand Am slowly going up because I wasn't moving and couldn't just pull off out of the stop and go traffic. I had to roll my windows down and crank up the heat to draw the heat out of the engine and cool it down. Keep in mind that this is in August. Next thing I know I'm yelling Clark's speech "This is no longer a vacation. It's a quest." Finally, traffic did clear up, and when I got to the B&B that I was staying at, a heavy thunderstorm came through, setting off the town's tornado sirens.
I was about 11 , it was late , my mums flicking through the channels and turns this film on just as the intro music kicks in. Sat glued to the TV , became a fond memory and one of my fave films .classic.

I have a feeling you guys both might have seen it, but if not, I'd recommend the 1997 film Contact with Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey. It's a Zemeckis film that's based off a Carl Sagan novel (at least loosely, there were obviously some things that had to be changed for Hollywood). Also, the film is dedicated to Sagan as he passed a few months before the film premiered. Lots of touching moments and a good sort of self-realization moment at the end of the film

Route 66 is the road with the attractions you mention, and that is the setting of this movie. Before the Eisenhower Interstate program of 1956, it was the longest interstate road in the US, running from Chicago to Los Angeles. It was the "holiday road" from the early Twenties to the early Sixties. Any coast to coast travel was pretty sure to take Route 66 for some length, back in those days. At the time of this movie, the Eighties, it was mostly unused, deserted, and poorly maintained: You would have to be a 'Clark Griswold' to plan your road trip on it. Nat King Cole wrote and performed the popular song "Route 66" in 1946. The character "Wally" closely resembles the real life Walt Disney. "Wally World" became a common nickname for Wal*Mart, used by employees to subtly express their level of job dissatisfaction and their low regard for that company.
I highly recommend watching the other Vacation movies because I love them but I'll give you a fair warning that the kids change in each movie considering years go by between filming. Not the biggest deal and it actually brings something a little fresh to each one considering they're not exact copies of the last ones. I'm really excited to see you guys watch the others.
I have the National Lampoon magazine that has the original story in it. Very good reading! Roy Wally looks just like Walt Disney's brother Roy who was the business manager and ran Disney after Walt passed.
One thing that makes the scene where the cop (James Keach) pulls the Griswolds over, even more dark. Is the fact thought James and Chevy Chase where actually trying to hold back from laughing at how screwed up the scene was.
European Vacation shouldn’t be skipped going through the National Lampoons. But you guys have to do Christmas Vacation on the next few weeks. Thee greatest Christmas movie ever made!!
This was made from a short story written by John Hughes that appeared in The National Lampoon Magazine in 1979. It's dark because of the counter culture nature of the magazine at that time. The screenplay was faithful to the magazine story which, being a print version, could create more outrageous images and leave it up to readers to imagine. Putting the story into visual form makes it more real.
Obviously Christmas Vacation should be viewed in the next few weeks but European Vacation shouldn't be forgotten. It is a seriously underrated classic.
Yes pleeeeeease do European. Nobody reacts to that.
European Vacation is hilarious, I'm so sad it's so ignored by everyone. It deserves a proper reaction here

That was so fun! Gotta do "Christmas Vacation", especially in December!
Y’all gotta do the shining!!!!!!!!
GRISWALD FAMILY CHRISMAS TIME!!
Great movie and one of the classics. Beverley D'angelo plays Clarks wife really well, dealing with the crap she gets dragged through. Smoking hot too!
I don't know who does your editing but it is spot on! They pick the perfect cuts!
One thing that makes the scene where the cop (James Keach) pulls the Griswolds over, even more dark. Is the fact thought James and Chevy Chase where actually trying to hold back from laughing at how screwed up the scene was.
Hughes originally wrote this as a short story for National Lampoon Magazine. Based on his own experience.
European Vacation shouldn’t be skipped going through the National Lampoons. But you guys have to do Christmas Vacation on the next few weeks. Thee greatest Christmas movie ever made!!
"This December we could do _Christmas Vacation..."_ well as long as you watch _European Vacation_ first, because that's the second installment.
I'm waiting for you two to finally watch the classic Bill Murray, Harold Ramos, John Candy amry comedy STRIPES!!😃🤣 ❤️🎬👍
lol "dark humor". It's just the 80's, man. That's how we rolled. xD
Yes!!! Christmas Vacation is a must!!!
Super fun review! Yes the Christmas sequel is the bomb! Super funny!
I’ve always maintained Ellen killed Aunt Edna when he told her to shut up and not move from the car indirectly.
