      So let me clarify your argument because I think several people including myself are having some difficulty making sense of what you are implying. You are defining "made" to mean produced from raw materials? Because what quite a few of us seem to believe is that "Made" means = Produced a product which did not previously exist... You know like... literally every auto manufacturer in the world. You think Toyota goes out and mines their aluminum and molds their own plastics? Or in simpler terms that you might understand. Before this video there was no water block that cooled VRAM and GPU core available for Jay to use.. and after the video there was.. BECAUSE HE MADE IT!!

    You make this stuff look so easy. I've never done custom water cooling before and watching enough of these videos is giving me a false sense of confidence
    still, this is amazing stuff. it's nice to know parts are basically milled the same and so there are options for custom water cooling on day 0 graphics cards.

    • @RyTrapp0
      @RyTrapp0 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      What he did here was pretty damn easy actually - mostly just because the gods of hardware aligned the planets so that all of this random shit that he used just miraculously all happened to worked together LOL.
      As far as liquid cooling in general and the 'complexity/difficulty' of it, it's all in your head. PC liquid cooling is MUCH easier than, say, doing general maintenance on your car(oil changes, brake changes, etc.) - which it self is typically pretty easy even for a first timer if you just follow a how-to.
      At the end of the day, it's just parts and pieces, and they're all designed to work together, just like how a bolt screws right into a nut.
      I'm a total gearhead that has built engines, modified suspensions, built some track cars, so, when I got into enthusiast PC stuff, I was kinda surprised by how people viewed liquid cooling. Frankly, it's child's play compared to building an engine, but I taught my 16 year old nephew to build his first engine two years ago(and right now I'm helping him build his first drag car to drop it in), so anyone can learn this stuff if they really want to(I'm self taught myself).
      And, we're talking about something MUCH easier than that.
      So, look at it this way; whether it's building engines or liquid cooling PCs, there are 10s of thousands of people all around the world that are doing this stuff just as a hobby, a fun project, so, if they can do it, why can't you? If they can do it without blowing their stuff up, how hard is it REALLY? What you're actually worried about is just the unknown, you don't have first hand knowledge of how easy it is, so your mind just goes straight to assuming that it's easier to kill your computer than it is to liquid cool it successfully, without someone holding your hand.
      If it's something that you're legitimately interested, then watch some how-to videos on here, go buy a basic EK kit that fits the hardware in your system, then just follow the directions and the advice you've heard, and you'll have your first liquid cooled system - and a truck load of confidence in yourself after finding out how simple & straight forward this stuff really is. Hell, feel free to message me if you have any questions even(cars or PCs LOL).
      Point being, don't let your mind and fear of the unknown scare you off from trying things that thousands and thousands of people around the world are doing!

      @RyTrapp0 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@wc7618 Well I'm definitely the kind of sucker that has trouble knowing when to "shut the hell up already" and that can't pass up the opportunity to offer some genuine encouragement(it drives me nuts when I see comments suggesting that PC liquid cooling is at all a difficult thing to do - the stuff is literally designed to all work together lol), so it was really akin to a calling from God you could say.
      Well, I was also just really bored at the time too, so there's that as well...

    • @neojack333
      @neojack333 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      well the most difficult part in water cooling is good planning. it's actually rare that you get all the parts you need on first try.
      Also it depends a lot on how you do your loop. if your using quick disconnects, what kind of them, what kind of fittings, what kind of pumps, pwm or not etc
      there are a lot of variables, and it takes experience to sort it out. and faillure means ruining hardware.
      oh and emptying the loop can be really tough the first time if you did not planned for a way to do it easily.
      nowadays kits from EK for exemple makes the experience easier. especially the quick disconnects.

    4:04 horrible application of thermal paste. If you do it on a raw die, you have to cover every spot (since the paste won't spread to every corner). Don't believe me? I had a 7970 which I thought was DEAD since it always failed above a certain temperature (80C in that case). Turned out the thermal paste wasn't covering all of the die because I used the line-method aswell. Certain uncovered parts of the die were probably overheating...Reapplied the paste and that card is running stable ever since. So, remember kids: It doesn't really matter how you apply thermal paste between an Integrated Heatspreader like your CPU and a Cooler BUT if you apply thermal paste to a raw die, make sure to always spread it across evenly!

      or a big dot/line in the center and smaller ones in the corners. Especially on laptops. Still new paste every year (and dusting/washing the radiator + oiling/greasing the fan if bearingless) makes more of a difference generally (unless yours is the case).

      I am a mechanic and I agree with you the line concept doesn't work as well as working the paste into the micro pores of the metal. When I apply silicone RTV on autoparts I alway rub the silicone into the metal for better adhesion. I learned of this after removing several parts over the years where the silicone never actually adhered to the metal and would allow leaks. Oil pan leaks are mainly due to this fact. If the part is installed correctly the seal will last virtually for the life of the engine, my evidence is in every vehicle I work on.

    I'd just use thermal epoxy for the VRM cooler. I'd also add some spare heat-sinks on top of the rest of the heat spreader.
    BTW, those quick disconnects are a great idea. More modders need to do that.
    He also did a dangerous technique of shorting a bias resistor to nuetralize the amp-limiter. Needless to say it almost blew out his massive power supply. Changing the values of said resisters to adjust the amp-limiter would work much better if you ask me. Swap out that high value resistor with a 330-Ohm and you should be sitting pretty creaming his score.
    BTW, only a few points below Linus' condenser cooled system is amazing. While hackish, Linus' system ha a water temperature below freezing, and yours is above freezing. That means you are doing almost as much with way less!
    I love to see you guys compete though. It always brings a smile to my face.

    Word to any small shop looking for a big idea. What we need, what we really really need, is a copper plate machined to sit on the GPU, and on the thermal pads covering the memory, the choke ,and the other temp related ic. The upper side of this plate would be flat, flat enough to mount an off-the-shelf AIO.
    Of course, it would have to be a customer for each of the high-end GPUs requiring water cooling, but it is very possible. The CNC, as the original 3d printer, could do this easily.
