While he's mostly unstoppable I do like the times where Bugs can be beaten. It shows unlike Superman he is living and breathing character, not someone held up as idealism.
I would be super stoked to see a video about Akira's influence on animation. I'd also be stoked to listen to you talk about dog farts, or really anything else for that matter.
I would love to see a collaboration between You and KaptainKristian. I feel like your styles and interests would mesh incredibly well. KaptainKristian is returning to youtube tomorrow, it might be a nice segue back into the scene. Love you, Jakey. Dog bless.
I think your part of Mickey mouse being international but bugs being All American was my favorite insight. I hadn't even realized how true it was. I literally felt a pang in my gut at how accurate that statement is.
It's depressing that Bugs Bunny and the other Looney Tunes have faded into irrelevance. Sure, Cartoon Network is usually trying to do something with them, but it's always too tame and a shadow of the classic cartoons.
That weird Looney Tunes cartoon that was basically just a sitcom where they all lived in the same neighborhood was... weird. But weird in kind of a brilliant way that I didn't expect. It's less anarchic but still has character. Got canceled REAL fast though!
VHS Headlines, 99% of the time in cartoons Bugs is supposed to be the victim, that easily outsmarts his oppresses. In Wabbit on the other hand, they turn him into the oppressor and it just kind of makes him come off as a grump with plot armor.
I wouldn't be too surprise. Western has been too focused on the writing that they forgot that animation require more than just dialogue, it needs the visuals as well. Which is why shows like Family Guys and American Dad felt so hollow and empty
@@markdibuo3756 At least their characters have some sort of life into them. They were forced to use flat characters because of the huge budget drop in animation after TV was getting popular.
I'm almost 30 and I always thought it was funny that a lot of people thought the loony tunes were made in their early childhood. And I saw that with people of my age and people who are 20 or 30 years older than I am. That's really great indicator that something is timeless.
Trolling is when you pretend to hold an opinion or belive a fact you don't actualy belive. Example, athiest goes on atheist forum pretending to be christian and make bad arguments. Tricking people in general is not trolling. My autism for the day.
I'd expect Kristian to seriously deliver in terms of honor with a video like that. His taste in music makes me think he's at least listened to Nujabes a few times. I'm sadly just not sure there's enough material there for a whole video. I'm sure it's be about underground artists like Nujabes.
This is what a good youtuber is. No click bait, no jump cuts, no overreacting for views. Just visually and audibly stimulating goodness. Hes the type that you dont even think twice about clicking their videos you just jump right in. Love this channel
Yes. He was saying that because Captain Marvel has a long history of courtroom cases so that would be one of the talking points of a video if KaptainKristian decides to make a video on the Captain.Zein Alfurati
It's really exciting to see how the situation has changed since this video released. The newer Mickey Mouse shorts are some of the most dynamically animated cartoons of the last few years, and they've fleshed Mickey out as a character more than ever. Meanwhile, Bugs has largely been waiting in the wings for HBO Max. The direction they're taking there looks really promising, and more true to his roots than anything else we've seen for decades. Disney took a page out of the Looney Tunes book, and in turn pushed WB back towards their golden age animations.
It's a common misconception that Disney only used 1's for their animation. While they did use them quite often, they certainly used 2's and even 3's when the situation called for it. And Warners used 1's when they had to as well, particularly when doing pans as it would cause a strobe if not done on 1's. The only animator I know of who animated entirely on 1's was Richard Williams, and he went bankrupt.
Bugs Bunny vs Mickey Mouse is more WB (home of gangster films, hard boiled detective dramas, the dark more flawed explorations of the human psyche) and Disney (family friendly, safe, formulaic). i expected you wold delve deeper into those themes.
I agree with being family friendly, but I don't think Disney movies is necessary playing safe (formulaic almost any movie is, with exception of auteur directors). Okay, making Fairy Tale movie is a safe move, but how exactly is safe trying to adapt Hamlet for kids (Lion King), Bambi (the original is really dark) or The Hunchback of Notre Dame? Okay, those movies don't have Cigars and Graphic violence, but I don't think they are underestimating kids either, or even the adults who can watch it with not problem. Which is incredible since A LOT of "adult movies" underestimate the audience as totally dumb folks. I really think they do a lot of risky movies, more the people recognize.
"Bugs is who you want to be; Nobody wants to be Mickey Mouse." Hands down the best statement ever and even more accurate in this current year. hahahaha
Shame about the Mickey Mouse comment. The old cartoons and comics by Floyd Gottfredson show an adventurous and brave Mickey, not the corporate mascot he ended up being. But about Bugs, seeing his evolution was great. I've never been a fan of him, preferring Daffy, but he's still a greatly designed character.
Crazy timing on this. I just saw a bunch of Bugs cartoons in 35mm at the American Film Institute's theatre here in the DC area and, as you said, the amount of character communicated through the movement, etc, that's lacking a lot of today's animation is just overwhelming. Great stuff.
I'm not going to say Mickey Mouse is a cartoon character with great personality because he isn't, but I don't think he's unrelatable per se. I think it's a shame that he's perpetually relegated as a foil to Bugs even in this argument. Historically speaking, Mickey is interesting in conveying a childlike wonder, optimism, and curiosity about the world. Illusion of Life talks about how Mickey distinguishes himself through a simple interaction with a bear; he's sheepish, trying to stay normal in the face of danger, with a specific intonation. I think as characters, Bugs and Mickey are contrasted by their cultural backgrounds; fast-talking city dweller and Midwestern country boy. In short, Bugs does have a stronger, more visible personality, yet there is a mold-ability to Mickey and he can be heroic or sly
Quote is in the first two paragraphs of the page www.joshuanava.biz/disney-animation/p-1.html "Mickey's reaction to seeing a bear right before him is pure "Disney," unique, spontaneous, fresh, and funny. No one bul Walt would have thought of that dialogue, or stretched out the situation to so much footage, or expected the animator to sustain the predicament with nothing but personality. But what personality! This is no ordinary, "Oh, Hi. Mr. Bear." Right from the first nervous gasp of recognition, while he is struggling to gain his composure, he is the Missouri farm boy living out a fantasy. "Oh. . . . It's you . . . that is, it is you-ain't it? I mean, isn't it? Uh. I thought you were Pluto, but you're not Pluto. . . . You're you, aren't cha? Uh . . . well, I'm Mickey Mouse. . . . Y'know? Mickey Mouse? I hope you've heard of me-I hope? ..." This gave the animator strong changes of attitude and texture in the acting that are seldom found in normal dialogue."
One thing I picked up on relatively recently and didn't notice at all as a kid were the almost abstract backgrounds in a lot of the Loony Tunes cartoons. Very flat colours with a few lines for definition here and there. It's a very interesting choice for that you really don't see replicated much these days.
Yet ANOTHER incredible video. Seriously, watching your work and channel grow is a pleasure. Thank you for shedding light on literally everything i've loved growing up and still love.
I guess I like Bugs a bit. Thanks for doing this. Kind of funny but I feel Bugs made a similar transition to a inoffensive corporate mascot as Mickey did. What made Bugs a great and versatile character was his personality, a undisputed asshole. He could fit in any scenario the writers wanted because his brash and arrogant but charming personality blurred the lines on if he was good or bad. It could often depend on who he was facing and their individual characteristics, where someone like Yosemite would deserve everything he got and Bugs was the hero, Elmer would get sympathy in many ways but he started what he got, and in some cartoons even flat out be a sadistic villain. What still made Bugs lovable in any case outside his humorous personality is how he is usually attacked first, how everyone's trying to wrong him and how he's just protecting himself, but at times how far he went could make you feel for both sides even though you knew he was going to win (but the times he lost were insane). He just felt natural, not someone made 100% perfect for kids. At some point I feel he lost that asshole characteristic, he was toned down dramatically into a more child-friendly character that did nothing wrong. It was perfect for a mascot and for Jones' cartoon style but he just lost what made him stand out from Disney and anything else from that era. He was the same as Mickey by that point.
At this point, he's in the same position as Mickey. While Mickey had the Clubhouse show (blegh), Bugs had the Looney Tunes Show (which sucked). But check out Wabbit and the new Mickey Mouse series. They seem to be getting back again on track!
I'd compare Clubhouse more to Baby Looney Tunes, TLTS is actually overhated quite a bit for what it's worth. I'd agree after everything is weighed in they are about equal at this point. Both new series do try to return to the roots which is refreshing after trying everything under the sun
Wabbit isn't that good the art looks ugly and it's alot less funny than real Looney Tunes. New Mickey Mouse is absolutely hilarious its so fast paced and crazy. And they didn't change the character design too much like they did with Wabbit. It just tries to look like the 30's version. The only character who looks Weird is goofy.
You are constantly making vídeos about my really favourite things... I mean, Batman, Gorillaz, Adult Swim, FLCL and now Looney Tunes!!! I just found my favourite channel
Your style, your pacing, your control, your tone; it all comes together to give a masterful narration. Keep it up. They don't make em like you anymore. 👌🏼
I am looking forward to the future where this guy tackled extremely long, complex subjects in longer-form content. I don't watch much short content except for when the content demands it like he's got going on here.
I kind of like his videos being under 10 minutes, they are short sweet and can be watched on the toilet but at the same time are always so content rich with no filler, a ten minute video is worth a week of pondering.
Every one of your videos has left me staring at my screen with a huge grin on my face, they are truly worth the wait, not many channels can do that to you nowadays because its not about quality anymore but quanity.
I really love your videos man. They're so well done, I don't really mind them taking a relatively long time to make. Btw I don't know if you take requests but what are your thoughts on modern animation as a whole? Like 2010s animation.
Do a video on It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia. When you carefully watch that show you notice a lot of psychological metaphors. There truly is genius behind that show.
I jam the fuck out to your outro music every time. Keep it up dawg. I love the video-essay format that you, EveryFrameAPainting, and TheNerdwriter1 are all dominating with.
That'd be pretty great. I actually been thinking recently about the culture of the 4 nations, and how everything from their architecture to language to bending movements were calculated by the designers (I also love how each nation is unique but clearly influenced by a specific Asian culture, with Fire being Japan, Water Eskimos, Earth Chinese and Air Tibet
This was a good video, but could you do one about Mickey Mouse? He wasnt always the static, emotionless character he is today. He used to be awesome, and is still one of my favorite cartoon icons, alongside Bugs. So could you give Mickey a fighting chance? That last line felt a little harsh given Mickey's history...
@@alfa01spotivo Minnie is the overly girly one and the overly sweet one and a huge goody too shoes like Mickey. Daizy is a short tempered snob and a huge diva and is a nag.
It's because golden age animation had insane amounts of budget and time compared to today since they were made for pre movie showings at theaters instead of on tv, and generally episodes weren't as long as nowadays. That's not to say cartoons don't look good nowadays though. If anything we're in another cartoon boom like that of the late 90s early 2000s, though with cartoons of different styles. Same goes for the sorta boom in eastern animation as well.
Man, the production quality of these videos just continue to blow me away, video after video. If people aren't seeing these, they're truly missing out.
I don't think it was until I was entering adulthood that I realised what an influence bugs was with being comfortable in your own skin. He didn't care about looking tough or commanding respect. He knew who he was and he and he wouldn't succumb to bullying or pressure.
Incredible videos. Original content, educated delivery, seamless transitions, and visuals that keep your eyes glued to the screen. Great job, man. I'm excited about your channel.
This is my favourite TH-cam channel by far! All the videos are perfect, in content and execution, I recommend it to anyone interested in modern culture.
I love this channel it shows how much interest he has in the subjects and it's informative without losing entertainment and is so well strutted and edited
This was the video of yours my ADHD brain hyperfixated on during the weekend when I first visited the person that would be become my spouse. I feel the warmth of those two days, two of the happiest of my life, held within this video, like a time capsule You're one of the best, thank you

after only watching 2 of your videos I can already tell that I'm going to watch every video that comes out. thank you for your time and effort
2:05 well technically those are all spin-offs of Bugs Bunny
I just binged your entire channel. Please keep up the amazing work because it is fantastic!
I could swim in your voice
Dude this channel is officially one 9f the goldmines of TH-cam. Please keep up the great work.
10/10 needs more random Yoshi noises in the background.
I've started making a playlist of all your videos, and with just the thumbnails it's already art.
Well done, as usual.
bitch you wrote that a minute after a 6 minute video. You didn't even watch it. Why you always lyin?
+Rohishimoto lol, I just have no words
+Rohishimoto he wasn't wrong.
Best video essays I've ever seen, Kristian just keeps kicking goals.
Will you do the history of the BBC
Yes that would be amazing
That would be awesome
Damn_Robotz_2 lols, i'll manage
+Johnson Taylor oh shit, nice one
+Johnson Taylor rekt
You should have said it different. One image each frame like Disney, and one image for two frames at W.B.
Love this!
Tom and Jerry
I jam the fuck out to your outro music every time.
Keep it up dawg. I love the video-essay format that you, EveryFrameAPainting, and TheNerdwriter1 are all dominating with.
DO THE LAST AIRBENDER / LEGEND OF KORRA!
yes
good idea
I want someone to do both those shows.
That'd be pretty great. I actually been thinking recently about the culture of the 4 nations, and how everything from their architecture to language to bending movements were calculated by the designers (I also love how each nation is unique but clearly influenced by a specific Asian culture, with Fire being Japan, Water Eskimos, Earth Chinese and Air Tibet
no
Omg this channel is amazing, I just watch all the videos! this guys deserves a ton of subs !
He isn't emotionless he is an optimistic, goody two shoes and a nice guy but has a temper when you push his buttons too much.
@@icecreamhero2375 agreed
@@alfa01spotivo He is also the most reasonable character compared to his best friends Donald and Goofy.
icecream hero
True. How would you describe Minnie and Daisy's characters?
@@alfa01spotivo Minnie is the overly girly one and the overly sweet one and a huge goody too shoes like Mickey. Daizy is a short tempered snob and a huge diva and is a nag.
Probably some of the best content on TH-cam. Keep up the incredible work!
Wow, I never noticed how lazy animation has gotten today.
Go watch a cool anime, like sword of the stranger or literally anything made by Kyoto Animation. That'll make you feel better.
because the animation for the golden era was for view in teathers
It's because golden age animation had insane amounts of budget and time compared to today since they were made for pre movie showings at theaters instead of on tv, and generally episodes weren't as long as nowadays. That's not to say cartoons don't look good nowadays though. If anything we're in another cartoon boom like that of the late 90s early 2000s, though with cartoons of different styles. Same goes for the sorta boom in eastern animation as well.
Futurama, Rick and Morty, Adventure Time, Gravity Falls...these are all shows with great animation.
It's because there's deadlines to do and budgets on animated TV shows. :V
This is my new favorite channel. The content on here never ceases to hold my interest and attention.
Ever notice that the colour pallet used for his thumbnails are sequential??
Seriously look at his video page!
Just checked it. Wow that's really cool.
A lot of people have noticed it. Not calling you out or anything, just saying.

Man, the production quality of these videos just continue to blow me away, video after video. If people aren't seeing these, they're truly missing out.
Love your essays but please do dragon ball z
I don't think it was until I was entering adulthood that I realised what an influence bugs was with being comfortable in your own skin. He didn't care about looking tough or commanding respect. He knew who he was and he and he wouldn't succumb to bullying or pressure.
The quality of these videos is astounding
Wow man, this was definitely your best video so far! Thanks for the entertainment man!
