Also filter 7111-296 works. The top of the filter is open and will allow the fuel to flow in better instead of just around the outer edge. Especially in freezing temperatures. A small pair of vise grip pliers clamped to the priming handle helps too.
The 3166 filter is the correct filter. If it was a double filter setup it would still be the same filter for both. I just bought a 7000 ford that had the double filter setup and changed it to the single filter.
You are correct, there is an error on the NAPA website because it also shows a 3271 filter as a possible replacement, but that is for a gas tractor. Selecting the diesel engine should make that filter choice go away, but it doesn't..........nobody's perfect.
This video is going to help me tremendously-I have the same problem with my 5000 starting but wont idle-black smoke out the exhaust and then dies-it will recrank ok but just wont stay running. I changed out my filter hoping it would help-my bowl looked just like yours, looked like mud-I loosened my injectors to get the air out of the pump-I didn't know the bolt on the left was a bleed hole, thanks for that info-and its the same thing far as wont idle. I was getting ready to drain my fuel out and looked for a way to remove the cut off valve on YT and found you-did you order the same cut off valve from NAPA and did it work the 2nd time? I also got the small 0 ring with my new fuel filter and couldn't figure out its purpose until now. Thanks for posting this....

Would like to see everything you do with it. It's a beautiful find.

Great video Steve, makes me want a tractor lol
You can bet that the tank is full of sludge and crud. You will have to clean it flush all the old fuel out.

So close, yet so far away.
Pretty sure that is a bumper bolt. They had the chrome cap over the head.
